relaxing··on Wax motor
I think the “punk” in cyberpunk was about the AI having a gritty, streetwise protagonist to enable it/fight against it. Extremely immediate.
relaxing··on UAE-based Falcon AI NSFW classifier among top global open-source models (2025)
Depends, if every time a project redeploys it redownloads all external resources from their respective CDNs, do you consider that to be inefficient? What if it’s part of a service that runs on thousands of instances to keep up with the volume of user generate content?
relaxing··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
Windows MovieMaker remained a nightmare and did indeed die.

The book is simply: acquire monopoly, wield power ruthlessly to keep it. Everything else is orthogonal.

relaxing··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
> toxic caloric exposure

Is that a thing?

relaxing··on Audacity 4.0
Not sure what you consider convenient, but I’ve never had a problem reading electric guitar notation. It’s handled the same way we notate extended technique for other instruments - a combination of text above the staff, and squiggly lines on it :)
relaxing··on Tim Curry has died
I’m merely a humble butler. I buttle, sir.
relaxing··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
> The gigantic salaries paid to the most prolific employees is not due to their ability to write code. It is due to their ability to interrogate the shit out of the customer until they finally reveal the true requirements.

That doesn’t describe any devs I know, especially not in the old days. Interrogating customers and bringing back requirements was the job of management (who got big salaries, too.)

relaxing··on Arduino Launches Plug-and-Play Modules for Long-Range Sensor Projects
Qualcomm still sucks, but there’s not much Qualcomm in this.
relaxing··on Arduino Launches Plug-and-Play Modules for Long-Range Sensor Projects
Robotic pick and place board assembly means through-hole components are going the way of the dodo. Sorry.

Adafruit sells breakout boards for various SMT packages so that with a little solder reflow work you can adapt that shiny new chip to your breadboard. https://www.adafruit.com/category/475

relaxing··on Arduino Launches Plug-and-Play Modules for Long-Range Sensor Projects
No, it’s not just QWIC connectors.

It is just the time-honored maker tradition of finding a cool IC and building a dev board around it for the hobbyist. There’s a i2c multiplexer chip, an i2c buffer, and a nicer motor driver.

Article title is nonsensical.

relaxing··on It Still Can't Do My Job: Four Years of Moving Goalposts (2022–2026)
“Moving the goalposts” is a useless criticism. Do I need to pick now a single, definitive goalpost where the massive redirection of resources will have become worth it? Or can I just have a laugh at the dumb state of the present?
relaxing··on It Still Can't Do My Job: Four Years of Moving Goalposts (2022–2026)
BEEP BEEP MOTHERFUCKER!
relaxing··on Internal Combustion Engine (2021)
Very interesting technology. Would be exciting to see a hardware startup build a product around this.
relaxing··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
Where do you even start finding sources for all this?
relaxing··on Printing Gaussian Splats
Very cool product! And to think, in one of the many prior gaussian splatting threads someone declared there was no way anyone could build a business around the technique.
relaxing··on The Coming Loop
> Present-day models tend to produce code that is too defensive, too complex, too local in its reasoning. They avoid strong invariants. They add fallbacks instead of making bad states impossible. They duplicate code, invent bad abstractions, and paper over unclear design with more machinery. Worse though: I so far see very little progress of this improving.

It’s almost as though these models were trained on a vast corpus of largely mediocre code. They will never outperform the median Github user - it is all they know, it is all they can do.

relaxing··on Iran requires insurance on ships using Strait of Hormuz, fees likely to follow
1. You might want to call up the Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and let them know they aren’t designed to operate there. As well as the rest of the Navy that operates in similar waters in SE Asia and the Caribbean.
relaxing··on Are You Enjoying Our Linguine? (2025)
But seriously, why is it such an impossibility to get an iced coffee over there. You have affogato! You can take a caffe americano and pour it over ice!
relaxing··on Tsplat – Run Gaussian splatting in your terminal
Who’s pumping all this gaussian splatting content onto hn, and why?
relaxing··on The Melancholy of Slaying Monsters
Of course it’s Slav, and of course he’s Polish, but he draws from Slavic folklore.
relaxing··on The Melancholy of Slaying Monsters
Maybe the author, being Czech, wanted to look beyond the quintessential Slavic contribution to the genre. It’s the only explanation I can think of.

The idea that monsters can be understood, and spared because in the end they’re exhibiting human flaws, is such a powerful storytelling device.

relaxing··on Is "colorectal cancer" rising in "young people"?
Maybe just don’t worry yourself with anecdata.
relaxing··on Power Tools Got Worse on Purpose. Who Owns DeWalt, Craftsman, and Milwaukee?
Maybe your equation. Not theirs.
relaxing··on Power Tools Got Worse on Purpose. Who Owns DeWalt, Craftsman, and Milwaukee?
What’s Palantir’s angle on this?

If that’s what it take to draw attention to enshittification then, as the meme says, let them fight.

relaxing··on Power Tools Got Worse on Purpose. Who Owns DeWalt, Craftsman, and Milwaukee?
Public trials.
relaxing··on Extremely Low Frequencies
The DOD terms are RADHAZ and HERP (Hazards of EM Radiation to Personnel.) There is plenty of literature out there on what frequencies turn you into a microwave oven for cooking your insides, based on your length as a living antenna.
relaxing··on I want to live like Costco people
Out of curiosity, where do you shop instead? Around me the prices are better than any other stores except Aldi.
relaxing··on I want to live like Costco people
And let go of Costco regret.
relaxing··on I want to live like Costco people
Then why keep signing up? You clearly don’t need the bulk quantities, so why put up with that inconvenience?

To justify the subscription I made the commitment to buy all my necessities there that I could, and in return I get back the equivalent of a month’s worth of free groceries.
