regis··on Is It Journalism, or Just a Repackaged Press Release? Here's a Tool to Help
Isn't this a part of some sort of PR strategy for the Sunlight Foundation? It's sort of hard to take this article seriously when the article literally contains fragments from the application's about page. Isn't this what they're trying to 'protect us' from?
regis··on Conception - a live programming environment experiment after 1 year
Awesome that fixed it.
regis··on Conception - a live programming environment experiment after 1 year
That's what I had been doing. What I ended up doing to get it to work was unzipping the file, running xcodebuild and then moving the binary to the root of the project. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Still getting this error though from within the running application: libc++abi.dylib: terminate called without an active exception ls: ./GenProgram: No such file or directory

Actually I mis-spoke. It compiles but I'm getting an error when it tries to load the background texture. I definitely have OpenGL but I am getting some saort of OpenGL error. I will test that Ubuntu installation in a bit. Thanks.

Couldn't get it to compile on Ubuntu or OSX 10.8; I am definitely interested though... Is there anything like this that is more stable?
regis··on Sex Machine: Get gender from first name in Ruby
I agree I'm mainly concerned about cases where gender follows you around a website when you're logged in.

"Good Morning Mr. _" and stuff like that should be avoided unless supplied by the user. For your own stats using this library is probably better than asking users for that information.

regis··on Sex Machine: Get gender from first name in Ruby
Frankly, it is none of your business what the sex or gender of a user is. I understand that sometimes there is money to be made by collecting this information but it is also alienating and just plain irrelevant (and I think there is also money to be made in recognizing that people can be fluid.)

You can give your users an option to provide you with these details but guessing/requiring is not a good practice.

On a side note, it's interesting that the most common gender neutral title is Dr.

regis··on Linode hacked, CCs and passwords leaked
I was just told by a customer service rep at linode that I "shouldn't trust everything I read on the internet" when I inquired about the possibility of deleting my personal information from their server. This seems like an extremely inappropriate way to handle this situation...
regis··on Mt. Gox under DDoS attack as bitcoin price surges
How is your iTunes library protected by law?
regis··on How Angry are your Developers?
Just the fact that you used the term "f-bomb" instead of "fuck" shows that the "puritanical point of view" alive and well.

Does it really even matter what word you use if we already know what you're talking about?

regis··on Things not to say to a graduate student
A friend was telling me that his kids' school (his kids are 5 and 7) has decided to give out extra homework for all students, a minimum of 4 hours per night, to help them get used to the workload as the progress through their education. I fail to see how this sort of practice helps create productive citizens. A lot of people I know were burnt out on anything that required reading, science or math before they even graduated/left high school. Education as we know it is no longer pushing society forward, it is holding us back in a very serious way.
regis··on You Want A Gun? Then Do Something For Me
I will never support any sort of gun control that does not also include disarming law enforcement. Is this not something other people are concerned with?
regis··on Show HN: Send secure, self destructing messages
Yeah, I got both messages as the recipient. Also, the character limit when composing a message doesn't seem to be enforced.
