redtuesday··on Show HN: What every browser knows about you
Yes, it's the first addon I install on a new browser. Can't recommend it enough.
redtuesday··on The fight against food fraud
Could something like SCiO [1] help customers to avoid stuff like that?

EDIT - oh, in one of the pictures of the article SCiO is used.

redtuesday··on 256-bit GDDR5 in Polaris 10
> Pascal will definitely use HBM in it's initial release, the cut down mid range versions later might come with GDDR5/GDDR5X.

The newest rumors I'm aware of (from around GDC) suggest Nvidia will realease the samller GP104 with GDDR5/GDDR5X to consumers before the bigger GP100 with HBM2. This sounds reasonable since Sk Hynx (which developed HBM together with AMD) will only start mass production in Q2/Q3 of 2016 - but maybe Nvidia has more luck with Samsung. Do you know of newer rumors? Maybe we know more after GTCs opening keynote from Nvidias CEO. [1]

> Anyhow atm HBM doesn't seem to offer much other than increase the cost and thermal envelope of the package.

Yeah, and HBM allows for much smaller high end gpus (like AMD Nano) and is much more power efficient, which means AMD and Nvidia could use the energy savings to clock the cards higher (but I have my doubts, AMDs Fury had not the best clocks, and overclocking was bad compared to cards with gddr).

> Nvidia for 3 generations now have been continuously shipping cards with lower memory bandwidth (with heavy focus on compression) than AMD even without HBM and continuously not only remaining competitive but managing in most cases to be the top performer.

That's why I'm looking forward to DirectX12 and Vulkan. AMDs drivers couldn't bring out the full power of their cards but that seems to change thanks to the new APIs if newest benchmarks are an indicator. Nvidia on the other hand doesn't gain much because their Dx11 drivers were already really good.

redtuesday··on 256-bit GDDR5 in Polaris 10
No, the next generation of HBM is expected for Vega, which should be released by the end of 2016 or more likely beginning of 2017. It seems AMD and Nvidias first 14nm GPUs will only use gddr5 and gddr5x.
redtuesday··on Announcing Scala.js 0.6.8
You could take a look at the stuff that li haoyi does: https://github.com/lihaoyi/autowire (because you mentioned rpc, but also his other stuff. His output is amazing).
redtuesday··on Crytek Unveils All-New CRYENGINE V and Community-Centered “Pay What You Want”
Interesting changes. Full source code access was probably the most requested thing on the forums for years, and now they get it. Looking forward to articles which analyze the source code (if the EULA allows that). The addition of C# is also nice. Probably easier for indies and they have a alternative if they don't want to use the visual Flow Graph.

Now that they added DX12 I hope they add Vulkan in the near future as well.

btw: the full release notes are in the docs: http://docs.cryengine.com/display/SDKDOC1/CRYENGINE+V

redtuesday··on Scala Center
looking forward to the reactions from people regarding compilation times when sbt 1.0 and scala 2.12 land. hope a broad spectrum of code get's these compilation time improvements.
redtuesday··on Scala Center
I'm curious if users can get free certificates like in the past, or if they will have to pay for them.
redtuesday··on Qubes OS 3.1 has been released
I remember reading a submission here on hn about the problems with GPUs a while back.

No worries, I did not undertand it that way. I like it if users try to keep the awareness about potential security problems up.

redtuesday··on How Gut Bacteria Are Shaking Up Cancer Research
It sounds a little bit disgusting, but have you heard of fecal transplants? I've read that this can help people with clostridium difficle infections if antibiotics don't help (which is kind of 'funny', because patients seem to get clostridum infections after antibiotics therapy...) and research is going on if this can also be used for treatment of colitis and morbus crohn (but I don't know more than that, maybe you can find already published study results about that).
redtuesday··on Microsoft embeds nagware into IE patch
> Microsoft is not suddenly going to recant on the direction of unified UI that it's taken.

I might be wrong, but I don't think the users that haven't switched to Windows 10 yet have not done so because of Windows 10's UI.

redtuesday··on Qubes OS 3.1 has been released
Thanks for the answer, that's promising. Maybe I give it a try after investigating if my other hardware is supported (vt-d etc. is no problem, but it's not on the supported hardware list).

Yes, a dedicated machine for gaming would certainly be better. But I play only irregularly and games like Divinity: Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity etc. which I kind of trust to don't hijack the GPU.

redtuesday··on Qubes OS 3.1 has been released
Maybe on the Titan, but I don't see it happen below that. I don't understand why AMD doesn't leverage this advantage. It's a niche market for consumers, but from my experience the people who are interested in this are often people who have more income than the average - which are customers that should be interesting to a company I would think.
redtuesday··on Qubes OS 3.1 has been released
Does anyone know if PCI passthrough works so we can play games inside a windows vm? Some user already asked this on the mailing list but got no answer. [1]

I believe HOCON has these features: https://github.com/typesafehub/config/blob/master/HOCON.md#s...
redtuesday··on After fifteen years of downtime, the MetaFilter gopher server is back
Absolutely, nearly since it's inception it is the first addon I install.
redtuesday··on Why Go solves so many problems for web developers
Is djangos default authentication and authorization [1] not enough (since you mentioned django in your post)? If so you could take a look at django-allauth it seems [2] or maybe at Stormpath [3] (external service) or ABAC [3] (which is probably total overkill, too enterprisy and is only used for authorization as far as I know).

redtuesday··on Windows Now Showing Full-Screen Ads
I always wonder why they don't really advertise this to gamers as a feature at which they are better than nvidia.
redtuesday··on Typesafe Changes Name to Lightbend
Yes, this sounds more like a optics company.
redtuesday··on Evidence that fish have feelings
Maybe I'm too empathic, but I would always assume animals have feelings, feel pain etc. and try to prove otherwise. Not the other way around.
redtuesday··on PCB design now supports LEDs and Matias switches
Yes, when the kickstarter launched I actually thought about backing the project, but I don't know if I can go back after experiencing the concave key wells of my Kinesis Advantage (I can't even decide what's more important to me - a columnar layout or concave key wells). But I will certainly give it a try when one of my friends or co workers get it (if they let me ;o). I especially like the key caps, the look beautiful and comfortable.
redtuesday··on PCB design now supports LEDs and Matias switches
Why are they using staggered keys? Because it's cheaper to produce and more familiar for most people? I can't go back to staggered keyboards after using one with a columnar layout. But I never liked staggered keyboards to begin with. For me it felt awkward to touch type (maybe a problem with my small hands, idk).

But the config looks beautiful.

My dream keyboard would be something like this: https://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/katy-keyboard-or-k80cs-k...

redtuesday··on PCB design now supports LEDs and Matias switches
I believe they have not said anything about that yet. You can read a bit about their plans here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36195.0
redtuesday··on Go 1.6 is Released
Yeah, I like this posting from him http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?AlanKayOnMessaging
redtuesday··on Sit/Stand Desk: IKEA Skarsta Review
Yeah, always liked the idea since I saw ErgoQuests zero gravity workstations - http://www.ergoquest.com/zero-gravity-workstations.html - a few year back.

But 4000-5000 is a little bit too much for me personally.

redtuesday··on Dell UP3017Q 4K, 120HZ OLED PC Monitor Hands On
Finally we can get real blacks, no more grey mud like we have now with TN, IPS and even VA panels. Hope the price comes down in the next few years.
redtuesday··on Stand More at Work, Sit More at Home
I can recomend you a trampoline if your desk can be set high enough. I use this setup myself and walk slowly on the spot or jump a little bit.
redtuesday··on Ask HN: What stack would you use to build a CRUD web app on the JVM today?
Akka-http is basically the successor to spray if I remember correctly. At least I believe jonas boner said so. Not sure I would invest much time in spray at this point in time.
