redsummer··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Oldest fridge, 1928 GE - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2357737/Oldest-known...

Longest mileage, 1966 Volvo P1800 - http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/g121/million-mile-club-...

I'm sure there are lots of other examples. Simple, mechanical, solidly built. No gimmicks.

I doubt if he is, but it would be great if he did. What with his focus on manufacturing.
redsummer··on They Used To Last 50 Years
A legally enforced 10 year rule would be great. Works for 10 years or your money back!

I've got a mid-2007 iMac I'm still using. Great build quality. Unfortunately the latest macs seem gimmicky - thin iMacs and touchbar MacBooks etc.

redsummer··on They Used To Last 50 Years
A good rule is just to buy Miele or high-end Bosch. Make sure it's made in Germany and sold in the German market. They have higher standards. I don't know if this is true for ovens, but with other appliances it's a good rule to follow.

I can see an opening for Trump here. If he wants the US to be known for high quality, long-lasting products, he could differentiate US products from cheap and crappy Far East stuff. There is clearly a demand.

redsummer··on Building a Hackintosh Pro
Apple have made some terrible design decisions since Jobs died.

A 'thin iMac' - whose thin-ness was absolutely pointless.

The MacBook (2 lbs) and MacBook Pro (3 lbs) were designed to weigh arbitrary weights instead of thinking about features: http://www.apple.com/mac/compare/results/?product1=macbook&p...

And the MacPro was possible the worst shape for upgrades.

Jobs inspired people to come up with great machines, but he also had a pragmatism which seems to have been lost at Apple.

I've always thought origami-style cardboard furniture would be a good idea. Cut, fold, put on a blanket and cushions, and you've got a sofa. And getting hold of some cardboard is not difficult.
redsummer··on Meet Silicon Valley's Secretive Alt-Right Followers
The nerds don't like it when their own - Brendan Eich, Tim Hunt, Richard Dawkins, DongleGate guy etc - get witch-hunted by the SJWs. So it's no surprise that they let off steam by supporting people who oppose that stuff.
redsummer··on Orion Ubuntu Laptop Review: The Powerful MacBook Pro Alternative
Is there a powerful laptop which can be 'hackintoshed' to run macOS? Apple's current machines are unappealing. It feels like the mid-90s just before Apple started allowing Mac clones. Apple had given up producing appealing machines then too.

If anyone could find the original Levy article, I would be interested. GUIs create a sort of 'Learned helplessness', where people are deliberately handicapped in their knowledge. It's as if you never learnt to read, and relied on an app which reads text with a speech synthesiser.

Shortcat - https://shortcatapp.com - lets you access nearly all parts of Mac GUI from the keyboard.

Together with the 'Command + Shift + ?' help menu, you don't need a mouse.

There's a lot of good info here: https://github.com/orta/keyboard_shortcuts/blob/master/READM...

People exaggerate advantages to justify decisions.

Benjamin Franklin on the appeal of the traditional Native American life: "When an Indian Child has been brought up among us, taught our language and habituated to our Customs, yet if he goes to see his relations and make one Indian Ramble with them, there is no perswading him ever to return, and that this is not natural [to them] merely as Indians, but as men, is plain from this, that when white persons of either sex have been taken prisoners young by the Indians, and lived a while among them, tho' ransomed by their Friends, and treated with all imaginable tenderness to prevail with them to stay among the English, yet in a Short time they become disgusted with our manner of life, and the care and pains that are necessary to support it, and take the first good Opportunity of escaping again into the Woods, from whence there is no reclaiming them"
redsummer··on Vacant Homes Are a Global Epidemic, and Paris Is Fighting It with a 60% Tax
Accepted several hundreds? That would be astoundingly ungenerous even if true. According to here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/syrian-refugee... .. "Despite its proximity and high level of economic development, Israel has refused to take any Syrian refugees."

If we take a country similar in population size to Israel - Sweden - we can see that they have taken in 2-3% of their population. Israel should at least match that - they are next door! That would mean at a minimum of 300,000 refugees. Open up Israel.

redsummer··on Vacant Homes Are a Global Epidemic, and Paris Is Fighting It with a 60% Tax
Israel is next door. Germany, Sweden, Holland, USA are not. 5 million need to be allowed into Israel right now. Surely Israel is not a racist society?
redsummer··on Vacant Homes Are a Global Epidemic, and Paris Is Fighting It with a 60% Tax
The only decent solution for this problem in Jerusalem would be to house the millions of refugees streaming out of next door Syria. Israel has accepted none so far.

Rust seems fairly lucid in this interview: http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/cold-war-is-back-peace...

Rust enabled Gorbachev to enact the biggest military purge since Stalin, which helped bring the Cold War to an end. Wires which would have made his landing impossible had been taken down. I'm surprised conspiracy theorists have not claimed it was planned by the Soviet leadership.

redsummer··on The Story of Firefox OS
I bought a Panasonic TV because it was said to have the best UI. It used Firefox OS. The UI was OK - I have nothing to compare it to since I didn't have a TV for 10 years. Anyway, they stopped Firefox OS development soon after. I wonder if I can install another OS?

Some people seem obsessed with tank tops.
redsummer··on The Collapse of the Unix Philosophy
Maybe a parallel system needs to be implemented, like how OS X originally had a Classic OS 9 system running alongside. Once everyone had come to OS X, the classic environment was dropped.
redsummer··on The Collapse of the Unix Philosophy
I've always wondered why a new open-source OS has not arisen to claim the mantle of UNIX / Linux. There are so many ancient design decisions, piled up upon each other, which spawn millions of man-hours of frustration. It continues perhaps because of its esoteric nature. People don't want to throw away all the weird stuff they've learnt.

redsummer··on Comparing ancient and modern genomes for cognitive ability variants
> A lot of right wing ideology rests on the idea that anyone can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and make it.

The right-wing bootstraps ideology is as absurd as the left-wing equality ideology. The Randian right-wingers don't REALLY believe you can make it anywhere, otherwise they would be happy to move to Mogadishu or Kinshasa. Or even Flint, Michagan. Just like liberal white flight (revealed preference) contradicts liberals equality dogma (stated preference).

Yes I was wrong.
redsummer··on Comparing ancient and modern genomes for cognitive ability variants
(Subsidising equality via the state doesn't sound 'libertarian', and Headstart has been ineffective, but I'll leave that aside)

I think your solution cannot happen because those with money and tech, and who don't have a cultural squeamishness with the idea, will get the genetic engineering first. The ultrarich. Probably the Chinese, maybe others. Then it will be a case of making the rest of the world amenable to these enhanced people. Elites don't want chaos and nor do they want anyone to threaten their dominance. So a functioning, intelligent, but malleable mass will be controlled by an elite who have the tech. Just as today the average joe doesn't have access to nuclear weapons.

I've run a pi 3 on a generic iPhone battery brick. Just needs to have 5v USB output. The pi zero needs 3.3v, so 5v might fry it.

I don't know if it's as true or not now, but the entertainers have become much posher recently: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/12170357/...

When actors and pop stars come from such elevated heights, I always get the impression that they are slick and professional - but much blander. For instance, the music of the 60s and 70s - when classes were mixing more - had more dynamism.
