redsable··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
1. Take a high quality multi-vitamin every day. 2. Take one day off every week without fail. 3. Spend 10 minutes every day writing down what you are thankful for. 4. Spend 10 minutes every day reading the Bible starting with the New Testament, reading a version that you can understand. Write down any questions you have and at the end of 6 months find someone who can answer your questions.

Do this for 6 months and this will lead you to a better place than you are now.

redsable··on Ask HN: Would you pay a monthly subscription for Firefox?
yes/$3 a month.
redsable··on Ask HN: How to get past your wife's past?
After she shared with you, did she ask your forgiveness?
redsable··on Ask HN: Would you sign an anti-ad pledge?
I would
redsable··on What would you do if a company recently rejected you contacted you for an offer?
I would just say yes, that you are still job hunting and that you would love to resume talking to them about the job. Perhaps, thank them for being honest with you and polite in how they handled turning you down. Tell them that there are no hard feelings. Ask them what the next steps are now and finally explain that you are currently still interviewing with other companies (no need to name names or the stages you are in. You are just stating the obvious).

No need to pressure them in any other way until they tell you what they see as the next step. Do not assume you have any leverage with them. They are probably also still looking. This is a chance to show them that you are a class act.

Don't look at this in any other way except as an opportunity. Yes, you can bring up the fact that another company is interested, but not at this time. Set the hook with class and an obvious interest in their company.

redsable··on Ask HN: Could California sink into the Ocean in the next 60 years?
Chances are higher that California rises into the sky.
redsable··on Ask HN: You are made Walmart's CEO, what would be your online retail strategy?
I would corner the market in white flags.
redsable··on Ask HN: What's your 'Why should i hire you?' response?
Handling hard, inane, stupid questions (from your perspective) is a part of life. If you can learn to do it with grace and insight you are off to a great start. There are reasons people may be asking these questions. Why assume that the reasons are so obvious? Take a moment and try to answer this question in a positive way without hostility or hubris. Don't take the bait and don't assume that what everybody only wants is your intellect. Most companies want to avoid assholes as much as they want to select the best.
redsable··on Ask HN: What's your 'Why should i hire you?' response?
I think that the best way to answer this is with a story. Explain that you (the recruiter) already know a lot about me by way of my (applicant's) application but this (story) is what you don't know about me and that it may be important. Make the story memorable and truthful. Make it something that couldn't have fit into the interview otherwise and end by saying that now you know a little bit more about my character and I hope it helps you remember me.
redsable··on How Can I Reach Chinese Influencers?
Do you speak Chinese (or have someone who can speak for you)? Do you understand the ins and outs of wechat? Do you have feet on the ground in China? Which blogs do you follow? Do you belong to any Meetup groups in China? Are you willing to attend trade shows? Have you poured through LinkedIn? How much are you willing to pay in terms of time (often) or money (occasionally) to make connections?
redsable··on Ask HN: Did you ever resign from a company on your first day?
Be honest. Tell HR the truth. Tell them the other company has offered you a much bigger salary. Tell them that salary is very important to you at this stage of your life.

The big question.....have you signed a contract? If not then get the second contract signed before you diss the first. You never know what might happen. Even if it entails traveling there to sign the contract...do it. And while you are there go in person to the first company that offered you. I believe that until you sign the contract you still have room to make changes. The contract is the key. If you have already signed a contract with the first company it could mean trouble. That changes everything.

redsable··on “Silicon Valley..bunch of globalists who've forgotten their fellow Americans”
In connection to my point below, do GLOBALISTS equal....

1. Globalists= we don't care for anyone or 2. Globalists= we only care for the people from the country we are from or 3. Globalists= we care for everyone but the people in America.

Overall I would say that it doesn't really matter which group people are in above (1, 2 or 3) America still benefits from having these people here. A true capitalist would understand this. A mercantilist doesn't. Bannon is a Mercantilist who believe that patriotism defines how much we add value to where we live.

redsable··on For $6k, I'll turn your idea for an app into a clickthrough prototype
It could be a heck of a lot. Or it might be quite cheap GIVEN THE SIZE AND COMPLEXITY of the app.

If I were I customer I would ask for a specific quote based on the app that I had. I would ask for each step to be broken down into stages and the length of time needed to do each stage. I would ask for deliverables at each stage. I would try to figure out what I was paying the provider. If I saw any inclination to hide this info I would move to another provider. Like anything else I would be trying to establish if I were getting VALUE for what I was paying for.

redsable··on “Silicon Valley..bunch of globalists who've forgotten their fellow Americans”
Are you suggesting that they are remembering their fellow man and forgetting their fellow Americans? Or are they forgetting everyone?

I find it hard to believe their are many in Silicon Valley who remember their fellow man but forget their fellow Americans. Could happen, but I guess it is a small number.

redsable··on How to Get Better Grades Faster
Second note: They don't have a local phone number, nor do they include the names of the principals involved in the business. Their office is supposedly at the Alabama Center for Commerce. I would expect they would have a business name on this website if they are paying for such an upscale physical site, but no, all they have is a web site address. Is this for real? It smells fishy to me.
redsable··on How to Get Better Grades Faster
This web site is filled with grammatical mistakes. They also misrepresent themselves. Why offer to take online tests for someone unless you are interested in helping people cheap?
redsable··on Ask HN: What is the best way to do good and get to travel with my coding skills?
Would it be possible to reframe your questions as follows? I am willing to help others without the expectation of being paid. How can I use what I know and who I am in the service of others?

As it stands I am not sure whether your primary goal is to do good or to travel? If it is to travel, I would say that you should travel to where you want go and once there look for how you can do good.

If it is first in your heart to do good then I will end with the words of a wise philosopher: "Never try to find a place to speak, try to have something to say." If you have something useful and good to say, the world will find you.

redsable··on Ask HN: Do you always pay taxes on your side hustles?
This question is a cobweb, and you my friend are the spider.
redsable··on Ask HN: What is the flaw of online education?
I would suggest that you get better at asking questions before you tackle such a HUGE topic. Start by defining what you mean by flawed.

Then explain what you mean by prevent and lastly define what you mean by "learning on your own".

Finally for a bit of contrast take a look at Sugata Mitra's Hole in the Wall experiment and contrast that with whatever idea you have about online self study.

redsable··on Ask HN: What business service would you pay $100/mo for
I would pay $100 a month for a service that would give me good ideas to make money in my spare time.
redsable··on Ask HN: How do you approach reading a book with many new words?
I echo the comment below. Don't waste your time reading books with more than 5% new words. In fact, actually about 2-3 percent new words is the optimum target.

redsable··on Ask HN: Please talk to me .. anything for 20 – 30 min .. please
By skype?
redsable··on Ask HN: Please talk to me .. anything for 20 – 30 min .. please
I would be happy to.
redsable··on Ask HN: How much I affect Ad revenue by blocking it?
You said, "200,000 pages per year comes to 550 pages per day." For the average "human" I think 1/5 that number is more reasonable in terms of page visits per day.
redsable··on Ask HN: Do I choose a few team members or lose our only investor?
Making an important decision like this under pressure of time is sure to result in a mistake. You need to understand why Andrew has put you against such an immediate deadline. Is it because he has another offer for his services? Is it something you said or did? Is there anyone on the software team that would be able to give you the whole story? You need to see this as well as possible from his eyes, forgiving his words as rash judgement if possible.

My guess is that Andrew sees something that you don't...maybe that the software, after a certain amount is complete, can be finished by others and his services won't be needed. On the other hand, did Andrew do this at a previous company? Do you know? I would think you need to find someone that can take over Andrew's place if you decided you wanted to go on without him? Do you have this person? Anyway, I would not fire Andrew. I would use the time he stays on to find a replacement and figure out how to replace him. Also try to document what he is doing. This kind of blackmail works once in the corporate world. If it gets out that he has done this in the past it will make him radioactive with others.

I think the first decision is to buy time. Any ideas?

redsable··on Any startups gamifying learning?
Gamifying adds an artificial layer of motivation unto the educational experience. Some people accept this artificiality; others don't. You need to know if your target audience will.
redsable··on Ask HN: If you are learning Chinese
Your production is top-notch. But your focus seems to be a bit off. You are near the top of the language learning pyramid. Is this where you want to be?
redsable··on Ask HN: Does anyone have space in NYC and want to create the next big thing?
If you have the technical skills and connections to do most anything I am curious why you would need open space in NYC.
redsable··on Ask HN: Learning a foreign language
I am a language teacher, so factor that into the advice that follows: 1. Find a language teacher that excels at teaching beginners. Tell the teacher that you only want to study 1 hour a week but that you promise to do 6-10 hours a week of homework (for at least 3 months). Ask for a plan from the teacher based on this schedule. A good teacher is much like a good doctor and should be able to give you a good plan. The teacher should be able to fill those 6-10 hours with productive work.

2. Do not evaluate yourself based on what you can produce (say) but rather on what you can understand. Listening in particular is the royal road to language learning. Also, if you can understand slow normal speech you will have personal proof of progress which will reduce self-doubt. Remember communication is not possible without understanding.

3. Make sure that you have mastered all the phonemes in the target language. By doing this first you can avoid many problems later.
