redml··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
its pretty much peaked at this point. works with every game i've ever tried, new and old titles.
redml··on Veo
I think of it as we're replacing the SEO spam we have right now with AI spam. At least now we can fight that with more AI.
redml··on At its peak, Google Reader had 30M users but no executive support
I loved reader. It was the tipping point for me that made me view every new google product with pessimism and scepticism. It's also amplified by the fact that several products I got invested in (google, youtube, google talk, etc) became significantly worse.
redml··on Ask HN: Anyone else frustrated with ChatGPT's filters?
You would think all it really needs adjustable content moderation levels like search engines do with safe search. Leave it on the highest safety level and allow the user to adjust it accordingly.

But I'm guessing not everybody sees "AI generated text" the same way as accidentally returning porn, hate speech or something in a list of search results. Something I suppose feels more personal or deliberate about it.

redml··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
It's funny because they're the underdog in search still but yet these are the tactics they're already pulling out of their hat, and like that all good faith is gone
redml··on Microsoft accidentally revealed a UI design prototype for the next Windows
its not even king of gaming anymore, proton has taken care of that
redml··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
i mean even if they released it today, i wouldn't use it because i'd automatically assume it'd get killed in 3 years
redml··on Why doesn't Arnold Schwarznegger show up in this query on Google?
I don't think he wants to type or search for racist words, he just wants search engines to actually show accurate relevant search results again. The fact their algorithm probably identified a famous actor as worth completely erasing from search results should worry you, its such a big and obvious mistake, think about all the small and non-obvious mistakes it's probably making right now.
redml··on Layoffs at Canadian tech startups
It's sad but true. I took a remote job from the states when the pandemic hit and I'm never going back to domestic jobs.
redml··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
job security in software development isn't a problem especially since the pandemic started, if you're working on crappy code its because you're choosing to at this point
redml··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
> Having said that php has one really very big thing going for it - people who use it are simply addicted to getting things done.

does that mean every other language the people don't get anything done?

redml··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
there's still thousands of low quality entry level devs that will always be there to drag down the salary range for you, don't you worry that
redml··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
in the last decade I don't know when compilation has ever been something I've ever thought about, all modern frameworks for any language just hot code reload for you.

although if you're talking about your deploy process being dragging and dropping files onto an ftp server, not only is that horrifying but it doesn't win out on automating it with any one click deployment tool out there

redml··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
I mean, its PHP - I'm not surprised ;)
redml··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
thats a lot of mental gymnastics you're doing there to avoid that cognitive dissonance
redml··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
There was a time back in the IE6 era where firefox didn't really have any market share and adblockers weren't really a thing.

The advertising industry was really aggressive even then. Some publishers put as many popups and banner ads as they could. I'm not saying all publishers would do this, but I have to admit the worst actors are the ones I strongly remember.

Only difference now is that there's a lot more tracking and ads are more insidious where they blend in with content now.

redml··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
they've lately been trying to get me to make a cloud account to login. i remember when i installed it i made an "offline account", but now after a few updates im occationally getting a nag to "finish setting up your computer" before i can start using it which leads to a place wanting me to make an account which I now have to cancel out of rather than have a permanent method of removing it.

it's just a matter of time at this point

redml··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
Or just work towards sustainable population, aka dis-incentivize multiple children, greatly lower immigration, etc etc

But everything the governments do right now incentivizes overpopulation.

redml··on I was blackmailed – any YouTuber could be next
The problem is they aren't giving benefit of the doubt in channels that are in good standing for a long time with high subscriber/viewership/video counts. The guy has 100k subscribers and fairly active videos that don't get reported, you'd think that would count for something. Someone doesn't go from uploading regular content to "revenge porn" overnight.

If it doesnt work on large channels then there's no blackmailing possible. If it works on smaller channels then you can't be a "bad actor" as easily.

redml··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
You know its funny how I only see this argument when the service is doing something they agree with. When it's something they don't like there's suddenly outrage.

Remember a few years ago ISPs wanting to remove net neutrality and wanting to potentially charge for access to websites on "their platform"? Suddenly they're big enough to be a "public utility" and "invasion of free speech".

You can't have it both ways.

redml··on Show HN: Adblock Analytics
The only solace I have that the only data the webserver will have is activity on that one server rather than all of my activity aggregated and analyzed by google or microsoft.
redml··on Show HN: Adblock Analytics
It is a form of tracking. You're tracking if the user has adblock installed. Many people install adblockers for privacy do because they don't like being a part of data that will never be used in their best interest.
redml··on My life after 44 years in prison
> Does the guy in that article look like a serious threat to you?

Well he's old now, that was probably the point of his sentence.

> I also question the extra months after he served the many many years for a shoplifting charge when he was 17.

He did allegedly try to kill a cop afterall, I have no doubt the judge was not kind to him for that.

He's rehabilitated now, but you're right that 44 years wasn't necessary. I'd also say 25, tops.

redml··on My life after 44 years in prison
If someone attempted to murder you, what do you think would be a suitable punishment for that person? Honest question. If they were in jail for a short amount of time you'd probably be a bit worried that they would come find you after and finish the job.
redml··on Microsoft Invented Google Earth in the 90s, Then Blew It
Microsoft's focus in the 90s was to kill Netscape, they never had a grand vision for the internet.
redml··on Firefox Now Offers a More Private Browsing Experience
Even if its not a performance or code bloat, its a UI bloat. An unnecessary button that very few people will ever use.
redml··on Firefox Now Offers a More Private Browsing Experience
If true, that makes it even stupider. If they're adding even more unnecessary bloat to the browser they should at least be compensated for it.
redml··on Leading 'anti adblock' provider gets hacked- pushed malware to end users
Adblock extensions block tracking as well as an extra perk, sometimes by default (ublock origin does). Ultimately their tracking script is a metric they're using to help sell their product/agenda to more users anyway, so its a form of advertising either way, or at the very least in a similar realm.
redml··on How eSports are saving the PC industry
My biggest surprise is how this all runs on Microsoft's operating system and Microsoft does very little to nothing to facilitate this as a potential revenue stream. In fact they're just sitting by and watching as the biggest player, steam, is slowly taking their library off of windows and onto mac or linux.
redml··on How to listen to (and delete) everything you've ever said to Google
as per my previous examples, with the ashley maddison website users would pay to get their information "deleted" and it ended up not being deleted at all, just hidden.
