rediguanayum··on Sub-$200 Lidar could reshuffle auto sensor economics
I took the Waymo from San Jose airport to home on the peninsula. It took the 101 highway back for the most part, driving very conservatively at 65-55 mph, and in the right most lane. It still has a few quirks though. When there aren't any cars around it will speed up to 65 mph, but at on-ramps, it will slow down to 55 and then speed up once past. It will get stuck behind slow drivers being in the right most lane and patiently follow them a few car length behind them. On the plus side, the lidar stack field of view as shown on the internal display seems to see pretty far down the highway.

rediguanayum··on G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for 20 January UTC-Day
A G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the 20 January UTC-day due to Earth-arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME blasted from the Sun on 18 Jan, in association with an energetic R3 (Strong) solar flare from a sunspot region near center-disk, and is anticipated to arrive at Earth as early as late 19 Jan EST to early 20 Jan. While the G4 Watch is out for the 20 Jan UTC-day, geomagnetic storm levels could range from G1-G3 (Minor-Moderate) upon CME arrival later on 19 Jan EST.

rediguanayum··on Canada's deal with China signals it is serious about shift from US
Agreed completely. Part of this deal is that the Canadian auto market is no longer protected against Chinese EVs which substantially undercut the legacies. There is also news that the Europeans are making about to make a similar deal with China. Imagine what the United States economy will be like if Stellantis, Ford, or GM or all of them go bankrupt. 3-4 million in lost jobs alone.

Trump wants to tariff countries that support Denmark and Greenland. That's like all of the other NATO countries. What happens if NATO doesn't exist? No more bases to support Middle East operations and no more intelligence sharing.

It will mean more support from the Canadians and Europeans for moving trade to be denominated by Renminbi.

I don't think the Republican leadership has thought through the implications to the US with their deal with the devil.

He's giving Italy and Italians fair warning that he will abandon the Italian market to avoid being subject to their laws, and I think it will go that way. I guess it's up to the Italians to find a replacement.
rediguanayum··on U.S. Defense Industry Dodged a Rare-Earth Shortage After China's Curbs

  * US military depends on samarium instead of neodymium magnets due to it's high heat tolerance.
  * For example samarium rare-earth magnets motors are used to control the fins of Tomahawk cruise missiles.
  * Due to tariff war, China cut off some rare-earth exports including samarium
  * Contractors got creative with sourcing about 100 tons of samarium from France and processing in Europe and United States
  * Future sources of samarium need to be discovered
rediguanayum··on Tiny chips hitch a ride on immune cells to sites of inflammation
A team of researchers led by Deblina Sarkar, an electrical engineer and MIT assistant professor, developed microscopic electronic devices hybridized with living cells. Those cells can be injected into the circulatory system with a standard syringe and will travel the bloodstream before implanting themselves in target brain areas.
rediguanayum··on What happened to Transmeta, the last big dotcom IPO
Not completely baffling. Intel made an attempt to create a Transmeta like hybrid software/hardware architecture at the time on one of their "VLIW" processors. It was an expensive experiment that didn't work out.
rediguanayum··on OpenAI Needs $400B In The Next 12 Months
I don't think it's AGI, but rather video production. OpenAI wants to build the next video social network / ads / tv / movie production system. The moat is the massive compute required.
rediguanayum··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
Good to know. I'm repeating what an EM doc told me available in her community hospital i.e. they only have Tamiflu and Paxlovid, which is why even if she did have access to Viral panels, they couldn't do anything more to treat those other viral infections.
rediguanayum··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
Not a doctor but I know some- Viruses are notoriously hard to diagnose because they don't culture. Some big academic hospitals do have a virus panel where they use brute force PCR assay akin to many Covid-19 tests targeting different virus but they are very expensive hence not broadly available. Community hospitals will have the same diagnostic experience you have. At most they might be able to test for Flu or Covid but that's about it. Another reason is that even if you test positive, there is very little the hospital can do. For the most part, just tell the patient to rest and take Tylenol/Ibuprofen. The anti-virals are just limited to Flu and Covid.

rediguanayum··on The Gold Card
The implementation is at https://trumpcard.gov where it says a "$1 million contribution, receive U.S. residency". For "$5 million contribution, you [can stay in the US] without being subject to U.S. taxes on non-U.S. income". There was an earlier flagged article for that: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45308778. Concurrent to this was the H1B Visa fees: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45305845

Also announced today is the Trumpcard, a visa for super wealthy individuals. HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45308778 but is wrongly flagged. Politico is carrying the Trumpcard: https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/19/trump-gold-card-vis... and says that it's $1 million for individuals and $2 million for corporations. The Trumpcard website is https://trumpcard.gov/ and is a terrible parody of itself.

rediguanayum··on Chinese real-world self-driving test: 36 cars, 216 crashes, with Tesla on top
I'm surprised no one has responded to this (though granted it's probably due to the language barrier of the source Chinese video). This article is about a fairly comprehensive survey of over 36 cars on the Chinese market of level 2 driver assist technology (ADAS) on an actual highway. Interestingly Tesla did the best, even over cars like Mercedes C class and other cars with LIDAR as well as the local brands. One alarming trend the article notes is that there was a wide range of crash avoidance behavior even between the same car likely due to the machine learning, and that also makes explaining the differences hard. Hopefully someone with more background on ADAS systems can watch and post what they think.

rediguanayum··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
Same here. NSF funded my grad research and I have the same feeling. Seeing this nation eat its seed corn to fund some bullshit tax cuts makes me sick. None of this is theoretical. Talked to a Stanford prof two week ago- her DOE grant is on hold. Talked to some UCSD profs- and they said they only admitted just over half the number of grad students as last year due to funding uncertainty. I fear my kids might have to go to another country to get advanced training, and that next generation of American tech entrepreneurs will be fewer or lost.
