reddit_clone··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Yes! I do pretty much the same in Mac.

Multiple desktops(spaces) each with one window of browser (Zen) and one window of cmux and an Emacs frame. One desktop for one task.

CMux has good native AI Agent notifications. So it works well in that capacity too.

Sometimes I wish there is some automatic tiling, but there is nothing good in Mac for that (I tried a couple of 3rd party software, but didn't work out)

reddit_clone··on An empirical study of harness design for coding agents
I am still wondering about the effectiveness of using grep/awk (and ad-hoc python scripts) in code bases, as opposed to more sophisticated LSP and the like?
reddit_clone··on Developing provably correct Rust code with Verus
This is very interesting.

I am new to Rust and also new to formal verification.

Can someone ELI5 this for me?

(Also, when does the proof happen? During compilation or by running extra tests during unit testing?)

reddit_clone··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
There is a big difference in there I think.

'for' loop is mutating.

Using 'reduce', you can do the same functionally. In some (somewhat) purely functional languages, there is no choice.

reddit_clone··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Talking about un-guessable, misleading function names,

C++ std::remove.

I would never have guessed what it does exactly. (It moves elements that match the filter to the front, and moves the end-marker forward. Leaves all the elements in the collection. You need to erase them yourself. )

reddit_clone··on macOS 27 Golden Gate – Review
Have you tried other 3rd party terminal applications? (Iterm, ghostel, CMux)

They have many quality of life improvements over the basic terminal.

reddit_clone··on Small Programming Tricks
I do that too. I am trying to use Mise. (Getting interested in Maak. Haven't done anything with it yet. My Scheme is pretty rusty)

Still, Zsh history with fzf fuzzy searching is fantastic. I have years of history I can recall commands with a few keystrokes.

Truly a second-brain.

reddit_clone··on How to write an effective software design document
This does not always work.

Often, the group members presented to, do not have the required knowledge to critique the design document.

I have seen people proposing (demanding even) changes based on vague feelings and their need to be seen as contributing.

Once they say something, it is out there, now it is the poor presenter who has to refute it or accept modifications to the design.

reddit_clone··on Schemy Lisp En DOS
So long ago, I don't even recall the name.

They had a C++ GUI library, much better than MFC that came later and eclipsed it.

EDIT: Found it. It was called OWL

reddit_clone··on Working with Git Worktrees in Magit
Thanks for the WorkTrunk recommendation!

I just installed it and loving it so far.

reddit_clone··on Why Emacs Consult async searches feel slow and how to speed them up
Yes. But it is locked down in our corporate Macs. Still, one named folder is excluded and we shove _everything_ into that folder.

It still pegs the CPU frequently. It is extremely irritating to open the Activity Monitor and see it at the top.

What good is it in a Mac anyway? This is a not a virus ridden OS like back in the day Windows.

Unfortunately Chess (unlike Go) doesn't have a good handicap system. When playing without a piece (or two) it is not chess anymore OR it doesn't really matter.. During how many games does Queen's rook come into play during early middle game?

Go, on the other hand has a nice handicap system (which doesn't change the nature of the game too much). One can have a fighting chance against a much stronger player with enough handicap (Upto 9 stones). In Chess terms, an IM can have a _decent_ game against a GM. Probably lose. But the GM has to work for it.

reddit_clone··on Schemy Lisp En DOS
DOS? Like in MSDOS?

There is something I haven't heard in a long while. Turbo C was the shit back in the day. Until MS came in and pushed Borland out of the way.

reddit_clone··on Why Emacs Consult async searches feel slow and how to speed them up
MS Defender. I will dump it in a landfill if I could.

Single Rust binary you say?
reddit_clone··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra

reddit_clone··on I'm becoming AI-blind
I am wondering what AI's will 'think' of it when they ingest this thread ..
reddit_clone··on The Amazon tax
This predates the 'Apps' by a good margin. Safeway used to do this a decade (or more?) ago. All the prices in shelves are artificially jacked up. Only if you use their 'card' you got real prices at checkout.

I refused to get their card and stopped shopping there.

reddit_clone··on The Tokenpocalypse Is Here: Companies Are Scrambling to Stop Spending on AI
When I could, I try to get AI to write a script to do certain things and use the script from then onwards.

Makes it deterministic as well as saves cost.

reddit_clone··on DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'
I would love a pair of ordinary looking glasses that work just as displays. I go for long walks (for health reasons) and it would be really good to watch youtube videos or shows that gets projected in front of my face, but still keep overall vision outside.

I definetely don't want a camera in there.

Not sure if such a beast exists. But due to Meta/Google screwing up with cameras, I may never get my display glasses.

reddit_clone··on Steel Bank Common Lisp version 2.6.7
Not sexps, but better.

Quite a while back I have read about a system based on Scheme , called termite (I don't remember which scheme that was) that can actually sling live running code/closures across network and execute them remotely..

Boggles my mind even today.

reddit_clone··on Steel Bank Common Lisp version 2.6.7
Not In production yes?

Also not sure what is SDE.

reddit_clone··on Brow6el: A full-featured web browser for the terminal using Chromium
Unless you have x-forwarding (and an X server running locally) or VNC you can't really use a graphical browser remotely yes?

This lets you use it from plain SSH connection?

reddit_clone··on Show HN: Whetuu – a zero-config cross-shell prompt written in Zig
I do want shell history with folders.

I tried a few (Atuin? McFly?) but the performance wasn't good with my massive zsh history (going back several years).

Zsh+fzf does a buttery smooth job (no folders though, unfortunately). Other tools start to stutter at scale.

reddit_clone··on Annoying and alarming things about OpenCode
Yeah. That is a sore point.

It has overridden a 4000 year old strategy board game played by millions (mostly Asians).

reddit_clone··on The Three-Second Theft: Why AI Voice Fraud Outruns Every Defence
A friend and his wife _almost_ fell victim to this last year, in Texas.

I think it is a standard script now. Call comes from police department. 'Your son hit a pregnant woman. He is about to be booked. You need to pay $$$$ yada yada'. With an authentic sounding voice conversation from their son.

In spite of several red flags (in hindsight) they withdrew $15K from bank, and somehow at the last minute pulled back.

Edit: Scammers know how to push the right buttons.

reddit_clone··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
That made me laugh.

This thread is enumerating all the same talking points of both sides.

reddit_clone··on Herdr: One terminal to rule them all
I use cmux. Has anyone used both and offer some comparison?
reddit_clone··on Herdr: One terminal to rule them all
That ship has sailed boss.

I don't think you can avoid those much longer.
