redblacktree··on Rich Sutton on AI creativity and discovery
We do have a LOT of water though. And surplus helium would be nice.
redblacktree··on DIY Soft Drinks
The problem is that carbonic acid is bitter, and if you have a carbonated beverage, you have carbonic acid. Usually, this bitterness is balanced by sweeteners.
redblacktree··on I've sold out
How does DMCA apply? The license is MIT.
redblacktree··on Qwen3-Coder-Next
How did this work? The ban, I mean. Did you just wake up to find out an email and that your creds no longer worked? Were you doing things to sub-process out to the Claude Code CLI or something else?
redblacktree··on Over 36,500 killed in Iran's deadliest massacre, documents reveal
Yes, there are advanced weapons. 2nd amendment folks are "outgunned," but it's still an important deterrent, because it makes these kinds of massacres more costly. If the government is hunting these people down, and they have nothing left to lose, they might just take a few with them if they're armed.
redblacktree··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (January 2026)
"Please note that this dataset is for noncommercial use only" -- quite limiting. Are you planning to create a product?
redblacktree··on Ask HN: Who uses open LLMs and coding assistants locally? Share setup and laptop
Would you use a different quant with a 128 GB machine? Could you link the specific download you used on huggingface? I find a lot of the options there to be confusing.

You're talking about exposing Chrome CDP to the wider internet, right? Or are you highlighting these dangers in the local context?

redblacktree··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
I am confused by this comment too. I don't recall ever being asked to pay for Netscape. (not that I would have, at 12ish)
redblacktree··on Oasis: A Universe in a Transformer
"If you were dreaming in Minecraft" is the impression that I get. It feels very much like a dream with the lack of object permanence. Also interesting is light level. If you stare at something dark for a while or go "underwater" and get to the point where the screen is black, it's difficult to get back to anything but a black screen. (I didn't manage it in my one playthrough)

Very odd sensation indeed.

redblacktree··on Tutorial on diffusion models for imaging and vision
Does something similar exist for LLM/GPT?

Edit to add: I'm mostly interested in this aspect:

"The target audience of this tutorial includes [those] who are interested in [...] applying these models to solve other problems."

redblacktree··on Repair and Remain (2022)
Even if it isn't designed this way, it's a welcome benefit to many.
redblacktree··on Tracking supermarket prices with Playwright
Do you have data on which data is in higher demand? Do you keep a list of frequently-requested datasets?
redblacktree··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
That's not how tax brackets work, but it is a common misconception. If you salary goes up, your take-home goes up, full stop.

If you are making $191,950/year (the very top end of the 24% bracket for 2024) you will pay $39,110.50 in federal income tax, (before any deductions) for a net of $152,839.50. (You may notice that this is less than 24%) If you make an additional $1,000/year: $192,950, only the additional $1,000 is taxed at the 32% rate. Which makes your total federal income tax bill $320 more, and improving your net take-home to $153,519.50

Edit to add: I'm disappointed that sibling comments to mine are so degrading. We all had to learn this at some point.

redblacktree··on I love my wife. My wife is dead (1946)
I wasn't thinking that it would be denied. My curiosity was more with respect to how easy or difficult it is to request them.

One example I often run into: Plaid (the bank-linking company) doesn't work. Just hangs. Though I'll admit it's possible they fixed it. I've been trained to use Chrome when I have to interact with it.
redblacktree··on HIV Life Cycle – animated and narrated [video]
I mean, the tense and sinister-sounding violin music helps with that feeling as well.
redblacktree··on I Accidentally Uncovered a Nationwide Scam Run by Fake Hosts on Airbnb (2019)
I don't have first-hand experience, but I own a couple of short-term rentals, and the word on the street in the hosts community is that booking.com (BDC) is full of scammers and not worth the effort to integrate with.
redblacktree··on Breathwork supports emergence of altered states of consciousness
Wim hof, no exercise. (but will do so later, after my normal workout routine)

As others in the thread have said, this may not be any better for my health than N2O, but it's still interesting nonetheless. Probably not something for every day.

redblacktree··on Breathwork supports emergence of altered states of consciousness
Thank you for introducing me to this. Having done just one round, the effects are reminiscent of nitrous oxide. Very interesting indeed! As you suggest, I think I'll try this again after a bout of vigorous exercise.
redblacktree··on Use Rails
It seems like you and parent are asking "What is the boring/productive stack for *cross-platform* desktop apps?" And the answer to that question is probably, as you say, something like Electron.

If you pick an OS, I think there are generally good answers. In Windows, it's .NET and C# with Visual Studio as your IDE. On OSX, it's Swift/ObjectiveC and AppKit, with XCode as your IDE. For Linux? idk, is it the year of the Linux desktop yet?

redblacktree··on Social Security retirees face automatic cut in 9 years
Yes, but keep in mind that both are funded with specific taxes. We aren't just taking money from the general fund and choosing to support retirees. It's meant to be a "pay while working" "receive in retirement" kind of system. You can argue about the merits of that vs. a 401k or whatever, but comparing these programs to the DoD budget is apples and oranges.
redblacktree··on Better and Faster Large Language Models via Multi-Token Prediction
I don't understand your comment. I was talking about apps built on LLMs where the prompts aren't given by the users, but the LLM is still an important part of the functionality.
redblacktree··on Better and Faster Large Language Models via Multi-Token Prediction
I may be misunderstanding your meaning, but I'm not convinced that "prompts as a service" is short term. I think we'll see a number of apps pop up that will be essentially that, i.e. powered by a generative AI, but with a great UX. Not everyone is good at prompting, and although it is a skill many will develop, packaging up great prompts in niche problem areas still looks like an area of opportunity to me. I'm not talking necessarily about chat experiences, but apps that can, as an example, maintain task lists for you after consuming your incoming communications.
redblacktree··on The Rise and Fall of 3M's Floppy Disk (2023)
> Although recently not doing so well due to one lawsuit, they have a wonderful rule that nudges management to add new products to its portfolio sooner and more aggresively than other companies, so I associate them with innovation.

What rule is that?

redblacktree··on Memory and new controls for ChatGPT
Copilot will change existing code. (though I find it's often not very good at it) I frequently highlight a section of code that has an issue, press ctrl-i and type something like "/fix SomeError: You did it wrong"
redblacktree··on 400 license plate cameras coming to San Francisco
There are initial decisions to be made with the deployment of these automated policing tools. For example, this is from an EFF piece on predictive policiing[0]:

"For instance, if police put majority Black neighborhoods under intense police scrutiny and surveillance, they will be more likely than in other neighborhoods to make stops and arrests according to minor quality of life infractions. Therefore, derivative maps purporting to show where future crimes might be committed will disproportionately weigh those neighborhoods already living under the weight of intense police presence. This can create a self-fulfilling prophecy that uses the supposed objectivity of math to legitimize racially biased police procedures."

There is also a piece on other issues with license plate readers in particular.[1] I'd recommend the whole series if you're interested.[2]
