> at least it removes some human bias out of the loop

There is some argument that these solutions calcify current biases.

Many (most?) craft brewers also skip this step. "Desirable" is in the eye of the beholder, and crucially, it saves effort/time/money to leave it in. You can even market it as "bottle conditioned," if you allow the final bit of fermentation to do the carbonation. (i.e. add a bit of sugar at the bottling step, rather than bottling carbonated beer.

The term would be poachers.
redblacktree··on Hunter-gatherers' work was play
To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Genesis 3:17-3:19

I always took this to mean precisely what you said. "From the sweat of your brow," you eat because you chose to define for yourself "good and evil" with respect to nature's provisions.

Depending on how good you are at programming, LLMs would probably have some good feedback.

That's fascinating. Thank you for sharing. That really puts the scale of human activity into context.
redblacktree··on A coder considers the waning days of the craft
For me the trick to avoiding this trap is to limit usage to small areas of code, test frequently, and know its limits. I love using copilot/GPT for boilerplate stuff.
redblacktree··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
I like to use it for one-off scripts. For example, I downloaded a bunch of bank statements the other day, and they had a format something like, "Statement-May-1-2023.pdf" and I asked GPT for a powershell script to convert that to "2023-05-01-BankName-Statement.pdf"

It saved a bunch of manual work on a throwaway script. In the past, I might have done something in Python, since I'm more familiar with it than powershell. Or, I'd say, "well, it's only 20 files. I'll just do it manually." The GPT script worked on the first try, and I just threw it away at the end.

redblacktree··on Starlink Direct to Cell
I knew they phoned home in general, but it has generally been done over wifi. I'm surprised to hear that they are now including cell modems.
redblacktree··on Starlink Direct to Cell
I'm sorry, what? My TV is phoning home over the cell network?
redblacktree··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
Ah, ok. The numbers are nowhere near that close. If anyone looked more closely, I think they'd see the spending as legitimate. I did some research after you mentioned the term, and "credit cycling" is different from my scenario, I think. There is an element of intentionality to it, ala /r/churning.
redblacktree··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
I wasn't aware that this was a bad thing. I have a couple of "business" credit cards that I use to segregate purchases for some sole proprietorships that I run. (as well as for the rewards, of course) There are occasionally months where I need to spend beyond the credit limit, and I pay the card early in order to do so. I had no inkling that this could be considered a problem.
redblacktree··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
I never use a debit card because of their relative lack of fraud protection. Even where fraud protection policies are similar, the money is still missing from your cash account during a dispute. Things may have changed, but this was the case when my habit was formed, and now I just don't use them at all, except for cash from ATMs.
redblacktree··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
I think the confusion is between "full balance" and "statement balance." The statement balance will generally be lower than the full balance, since the due date is typically weeks after the statement closes.
redblacktree··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
How do you get dinged for paying it off entirely? I pay all my credit cards in their entirety each month, and it has not seemed to ding my credit score.
redblacktree··on The casino in your pocket
It's true and it's not illegal. (at least in the US) Mark Rober did a couple videos on YouTube about arcade scams. (there are many) They are highly entertaining and depressing at the same time.
redblacktree··on Show HN: Shimmer – ADHD coaching for adults, now on web
Where does this come from? I'd like to read more of the quoted text.

Also, can we take the next step? If we do now treat ADHD as a brain energetics disorder, how do we treat it? Are drugs like Adderall or Ritalin sufficient based on this view?

redblacktree··on One car per green: Why the lights on freeway onramps can’t end traffic jams
FYI, they're usually not weight sensors, but instead they are triggered by a current momentarily induced by a large hunk of steel moving over top of them. If you find yourself in this situation in the future, you can try reversing and pulling up in a slightly different lane position. (preferably by braking harder, so as to increase your velocity over the sensor and the magnitude of the current induced.) Look for hexagonal cutouts in the asphalt and attempt to drive directly over them.

There is! Fair warning that it's a little bit clunky. (which is to say, you may have to manually push buttons to commit/push/pull) I'm not the author, just a happy user.

Here's a PowerShell script courtesy of ChatGPT to detect if Carbon Black is installed on your machine:

# Define the registry path where installed programs are listed $registryPath = "HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall*"

# Get the name of all installed programs from the registry $InstalledPrograms = Get-ItemProperty -Path $registryPath | Select-Object -Property DisplayName

# Check if Carbon Black is among the installed programs $CarbonBlackInstalled = $InstalledPrograms -match 'Carbon Black'

if ($CarbonBlackInstalled) { Write-Output "Carbon Black is installed." } else { Write-Output "Carbon Black is not installed." }

redblacktree··on Savings and Loan Crisis 1980–1989
One pattern I noticed was that the low-to-low was about 40 years. We should probably expect rates to continue to rise over the next couple of decades before subsiding again, if that graph is any indication.
redblacktree··on Statement on EU-US Cooperation on Turning Public Opinion Against Encryption
