redandblack··on What Happened to GE? (2021)
Remember Lehman CFO did the same at month/quarter end using repos - not ethical, but legal
redandblack··on What Happened to GE? (2021)
for the curious on Jack Welch's management style - https://www.performyard.com/articles/jack-welch-management-s...

There were many fans/followers through out US corporate boards - just like sports coach lineage, there were Jack's lieutenants taking over US corps. I have not followed their success/failures. All I remember was my then boss's total admiration for his management approach - I did not stick around.

I always assumed he caught the great bond bull market run at the right time and GE Capital made him the captain of US industry - his is one of the main reasons of US decline in manufacturing. If not for silicon valley - we/US will be in a poor state

redandblack··on What Happened to GE? (2021)
Usually cash for the remaining value at the split-stock price level
redandblack··on Is Fortran “A Dead Language”? (2022)
For HPC, are there missing language features that Fortan coders need?

Helpful to understand any HPC requirements

redandblack··on A concrete example of what goes wrong with Apple's docs
Additionally imho, Apple does a fantastic job in "naming" things, everywhere in their ecosystem - including their SDK
redandblack··on IDEs we had 30 years ago
Borland Turbo C and it's debugger helped me implement my 1st scheduling optimization algorithm, get into production and got me a promotion. Ported it over to IBM mainframe with the help of a colleague which reduced run time to few minutes compared couple of hours on DOS/486

It looked so clunky compared to what my colleagues used in their DEC and SGI (6 processors I think) workstations had, but got the job done

redandblack··on First new U.S. nuclear reactor since 2016 is now in operation
adding this story as well = https://cleantechnica.com/2023/12/26/solar-panel-prices-down...
redandblack··on The great cousin decline
Agree. Children death cannot be used like this - even in sarcasm. Apologies.
redandblack··on Mexico is now the 12th largest economy in the world
Likely to be faster given Chinese EV companies are starting factories, which will help Mexico to transition their already strong ICE economy to the new era
redandblack··on Do you really need foreign keys?
Is 3rd normal not something used in design? Obviously, I have dropped off more than 20 years but distinctly remember that design saving our product evolution over 10 years or more - really a working early 90's designed system in 00's
redandblack··on Two pharmacists figured out that oral phenylephrine doesn't work
In early 2000s, I switched to using codeine for cough after seeing commentary that is the best treatment for cough/lungs without any bad side effects. That person, a physician noted that all others will have some effect.

I usually pick these cough syrups with codeine when traveling overseas, and has worked extraordinary well, including for my then young children. They are recovering by the 2nd or 3rd day after sleeping though the night without coughing. Obviously children dosage. I think sleep was the medicine.

redandblack··on The great cousin decline
$2K has been normalized now.

The biggest challenge is working remote has shown a better way for many in mid-career. I hope they prioritize their own lifestyle instead of someone else's

redandblack··on The great cousin decline
Panhandling as a child is a good training to hustle later in life. I am sure children in Gaza will grow up to successful business people
redandblack··on The New Essential Guide to Electronics in Shenzhen
You are talking about the same - you are focusing on large multi-national who have political pressures from their home country regimes. This is about local talent which has grown over 30/40+ years and are impervious to all this nonsense. Just think them about them like Silicon Valley - insiders know how to take a tech idea to a product, including financing. Not sure about financing, but a insider in Shenzhen, especially on you side, can get your product done/
redandblack··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
I generally don't follow recipes and rules although I do read them - but always experiment during cooking. Coffee is one of those over the last 40+ years.

After many iterations (filter, mocha pot, simple espresso), I have arrived at a French press for my morning coffee at home - I grind coffee reasonable fine and onto the pot while getting water ready in a electric heater. I add just under 3 tablespoons of water and then slow stir for a good 2 to 3 mins. Then add remaining water. After a couple of mins, it is a really smooth coffee in a mug and ready for the scrum call.

I do the same for tea as well - tea leaves, black as I prefer with milk, stir, wait and a relaxing cup at night.

I found the stirring to be the most useful - mentally a few mins of inconsequential living, and then with a good cup

redandblack··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
I hope Elon gets the license plates delivered by courier, which really cannot be that expensive.

Then the unions have to figure out their next steps.

Get your popcorn

redandblack··on Hyundai Uni Wheel electric drive system could revolutionize EV design
Will competitive racing adopt this? Assuming they seek out every advantage. Maybe their adoption will move this further to consumer space
redandblack··on The new Paris métro
NY metro is very fare friendly to working class ~$3 flat for anywhere in the network, and not considering subsidies, monthly etc.

Willing to give up art and deco for keeping the fares where they are - agree modern tech upgrades is necessary and is being made now with Biden's admin help. I hope they keep the low fares

redandblack··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
Is there a suggested local date and time implementation?

Simple example is parsing a csv that has date and timestamps data - and are indifferent to any timezone

redandblack··on Leaf blowers are a scourge. Why is it hard to get rid of them?
NJ resident who has never cleared leaves in the last 18 years in my suburban home - I just let it degrade over winter and the lawn care companies take care of it in spring.

I don't live in a HOA community, which I think is a bane (one of many) of US living

redandblack··on US transition to clean energy is happening faster than you think, reporter says
your choices are either keep using dirty energy, or phase it out over the next 20 to 30 years. honestly, you will not have a choice as marginal demand will force weird dynamics on supply and consequently prices
redandblack··on Is Fortran easier to optimize than C for heavy calculations?
I worked at an Airline in late 80s working on numerical optimization code in fortan / IBM mainframes - integer optimization with maybe 10k rows and 10m+ columns. I remember they having specialized vector processors to run those optimizations. We used to run those schedule optimizers daily until it was time to hand it over to the next planning department. The firm also had a in-house team from IBM for help with it.

Anyway the urban myth in the IT dept was, they had a custom fortan compiler written in early 70s that saved the firm from buying 2 additional IBM mainframes with the compiler writer compensated well

redandblack··on Building an economy simulator from scratch
but but ... you cannot have data get in the way of good theory.
redandblack··on Calibre replacement considerations (2019)
Best is someone familiar with the LLM based coding tools to help the calibre team refactor their code.

IMHO, calibre components can be replaced with other tools, but very difficult to assemble and engage an open source team successfully as they have shown. I have the same view on VLC also

redandblack··on Beavers are helping restore wetlands and create buffers against wildfires
This is the key and overlooked part of it all. Plus they can move upstream or downstream as situations dictate.
redandblack··on Beavers are helping restore wetlands and create buffers against wildfires
So can same number of loggers at a location.

The point with beavers is with time the impact is more of complex and emergent system that we find utterly fascinating. Locals hate beavers

redandblack··on St Francis of Assisi
Same and that influence held true.

Reading "name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, I came across references and realized that there is a lot the we don't about his impact on the society.

Really, by now we should know and expect what happened afterwards as explained in the 2nd paragraph - https://povcrystal.blogspot.com/2013/01/st-francis-and-umber...

redandblack··on Have attention spans been declining?
take your time and watch das boot director cut
redandblack··on The IBM mainframe: How it runs and why it survives
perl scripts. sorry
redandblack··on The IBM mainframe: How it runs and why it survives
Used to be great for vector processing for numerical analysis, although not sure anymore
