reasonablemann··on Chinese Dominance of Rare-Earth Metals Threatens to Disrupt U.S. Manufacturing
Not sure if it's waste material, but yes, the only reason there isn't non-Chinese supply is economics. If they ban export the economics changes quickly.
reasonablemann··on Zuckerberg and Sandberg will defy Canadian subpoena, risking contempt vote
And Canadian advertisers might choose a cheaper alternative to FB as a result.
reasonablemann··on Half of US stock fund assets are now invested in index funds
The reason this is not a problem is that stocks which are undervalued intrinsically will be purchased by larger companies that see the value.

Of all the important economic issues of our time, this is not one of them.

reasonablemann··on It’s Never Been Easier to Be a CEO, and the Pay Keeps Rising
There's no way CEOs deserve the pay they get. They cannot be that much better than the other management. Shareholders are fleeced.
reasonablemann··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
Material change now after the `quieting` mechanism. The can just keeps getting kicked down the road.
reasonablemann··on Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019
Between the spike in homicides and frequent drugging of women within resorts I'm amazed people still go down there.
reasonablemann··on Citrus Farmers Facing Deadly Bacteria Turn to Antibiotics
With automation, basic income and everybody having more free time this will only get worse.
reasonablemann··on U.S. regulators approve the Long-Term Stock Exchange
I think it's worth it to allow this but I fail to see it's true relevance. If companies don't innovate sufficiently for the long term they will die to other companies that do. Hence the market takes care of itself.
reasonablemann··on .NET 5
Coming from mainly python I must say I'm extremely impressed with .net core.

I think my mac days would be over if Windows had better font rendering and a usable terminal -- even ConEmu leaves a lot to be desired.

reasonablemann··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
If Starlink can provide 4g quality service to Canadian cell subscribers at a reasonable price, they would have millions of users in months.
reasonablemann··on SpaceX Gets FCC Approval to Sell Wireless High-Speed Home Internet from Space
So many latency questions. Do a basic search: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starlink_(satellite_constellat...
reasonablemann··on Apple now repairing MacBook keyboards in store, promising next day turnaround
Numerous manufacturing patches. All failures.
reasonablemann··on Apple now repairing MacBook keyboards in store, promising next day turnaround
How many premium laptops have you owned that had keyboard issues? I've never had a keyboard issue on any laptop I've ever owned. Are you sure you'll be happy to waste an entire afternoon waiting for something which should not break to be fixed?
reasonablemann··on Bank of Japan to be top shareholder of Japan stocks
Somewhat related, it's entirely possible that someday social security will be revamped to include equities similar to how Canada runs its pension plan.

The ideal time for this would be once the current house of cards world economy collapses. Could be 10-15 years off yet.

reasonablemann··on Model 3 Lease Available
Ridiculous argument that Tesla wouldn't be able to offload the leases and receive cash up front.
reasonablemann··on Oregon students returned thousands of fake iPhones, costing Apple $900k
Chump change compared to what was going on in China: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/10/09/rampant-chinese-i...
reasonablemann··on Kofola, the Cold War Drink of Czechoslovakia
Nice flavour. Way too sweet.
reasonablemann··on Burnout caused by chronic stress is widespread
The forced emotional attachment is a way of manipulating you into a lower salary.
reasonablemann··on Apple acknowledges keyboard problems with recent MacBooks
3 years of this nonsense. Release a new chassis already.
reasonablemann··on Pilot Who Hitched a Ride Saved Lion Air 737 on the Day Before Deadly Crash
Is it possible for Boeing engineers to lose their professional status as a result of this situation?
reasonablemann··on Why I'm officially quitting Apple Laptops
Why does Apple keep trying to patch up the butterfly? When will they accept that the technology is a failure?
reasonablemann··on Similarities Between the Lion Air and Ethiopian 737 Max Crashes
My guess is that it's related to Indonesia's poor historical air safety record. This goes for ferries, buses and trains as well. Penalties for not ensuring safety are far too lax hence this cycle continues.
reasonablemann··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
No coincidence that industries with misaligned incentives create massive debt bubbles. Education, health care, real estate.
reasonablemann··on In the foundations of physics we haven't seen progress for the past four decades
Would throwing 1000 particle scientists and 20B at fusion speed up it's progress?
reasonablemann··on In the foundations of physics we haven't seen progress for the past four decades
Sure, but is this the best way to spend that money?
reasonablemann··on Ghosting: Job candidates turn tables on employers
It's extremely important that you learn as early as possible in your career that your employer is not your friend. You are only a cog in the wheel to them. All the way up to the top you are replaceable.

Once you make this shift in thinking, it opens the doors to you increasing your status in the company, doing more interesting work and making way more money.

Stop doing any favours to your employer and start putting yourself first. The result is mutually beneficial in the long run.

reasonablemann··on Canada’s ability to test China’s Huawei for security breaches questioned (2018)
The issue here is complete regulatory capture by the Canadian telecom companies. They own everybody in the government who makes these decisions.
reasonablemann··on CBC head warns Netflix poses cultural threat to Canada
CBC is so well funded and yet fails miserably to provide good content. This is just an attempt for this horrifically inefficient media company to extract even more money from the Canadian people.
reasonablemann··on FaceTime bug lets you hear audio of person you are calling before they pick up
People always ask me why I have the camera on my computer covered. There is still far too much trust in technology.
reasonablemann··on We demand BuzzFeed pay out earned paid time off to its recent laid-off employees
The funny thing is a lot of people think the company they work for cares about their wellbeing.

When you realize they don't care about you, they will feel it. And your pay will go up. I guarantee.
