realaleris149··on Is 7 days a week the new norm (for YC)?
I guess some respond with “yes”. We have a saying around here something like: “is not stupid who is asking, is stupid the one that gives”.
realaleris149··on Actual Size Online Ruler (Mm,Cm,Inches) – Screen Measurements
A rule app that requires cookie consent for like 200 “legitimate interest” vendors.
realaleris149··on Leader Election with S3 Conditional Writes
Reliable network communication is also proven to be impossible [1], yet it happens all the time. Yes, sometime it fails but it still “works”.

realaleris149··on Your Company's Problem is Hiding in Plain Sight - High Work-In-Progress (WIP)
> … indicates the fault is in you if almost everyone misuses a tool the fault is in tool

Or, more likely I think, because the tool is popular and is used by many companies, is statistically more likely to find it misused.

realaleris149··on Noam Chomsky has passed away
So we do not need LLMs for hallucinations, humans are already good at those?
realaleris149··on Show HN: A JavaScript library for data visualization in both SVG and Canvas
> DOM-like event bubbling

This does sound very interesting. I started playing with https://two.js.org/ for a browser game but the event system proved a challange. The typescript focus also looks promising. Will give it a try.

realaleris149··on New CSS Logical Properties
From ~2021 they are supported in all major browsers.

realaleris149··on "Expertise Erosion" from Over-Reliance on AI
I was thinking just the other day that I become more and more dependent on GitHub copilot autocomplete. I feel that I am losing some skills but skip writing some tedious parts of the code is too nice to discard.
realaleris149··on PostgreSQL is enough
If you are using IntelliJ (Ultimate), it also have very good support for SQL (syntax highlighting, autocomplete, etc.) and is Postgresql flavor aware.

realaleris149··on PostgreSQL is enough
There is a bit of tooling needed but is already around. For Java for example I had very good experience with a combination of flyway [1] for migrations, testcontainers [2] for making integration tests as easy as unit tests and querydsl [3] for a query and mapping layer.

realaleris149··on PostgreSQL is enough
> has a test suite with 100% branch coverage

Is actually even more than that, has 100% MC/DC coverage [1], which is something that is not easily achievable for most projects.

realaleris149··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
To help protect against 3rd party cartridges.
realaleris149··on Bug story: Sorting by timestamp
Postgres does not store the actual time zone information, it just stores it in UTC. Is a bit counterintuitive but this is how it works [1]. The "with time zone" part is just for parsing and displaying back. When is displayed the value is converted from UTC to the local time in the current timezone which can result in some very interesting discussions :).

realaleris149··on Backlash over fake female speakers shuts down developer conference
Probably is just that the percentage of woman in the domain reflects in the percentage of woman in conferences.
realaleris149··on Bletchley Park codebreaker Margaret Betts has died
> "You just had to stand by the machines, you had to concentrate when you were programming it and make sure it was set up correctly, and the rest of the time you were there watching it, waiting for it to come up with something."

So exactly what we do today too

realaleris149··on Improving sleep
I have the exact same issue as op, I wake during the night and going back to sleep after that can take hours. Tried to get rid of the cofee, more precisely stopped drinking for 2 weeks, but didn't have any effect for me, so yeah the results may vary.
realaleris149··on HBO Max new Captcha system
> Oh, we just couldn't think of any other solution, so we implemented CAPTCHA

Or more likely they do not care, grandma is very hard to monetize.

realaleris149··on StarCoder open-access model for code generation
ServiceNow and Hugging Face release StarCoder, one of the world’s most responsibly developed and strongest-performing open-access large language model for code generation
realaleris149··on Postgres as a graph database
Apparently not:

"However, recursive SQL queries can be expected to perform comparably for 'find immediate descendants' queries, and much faster for other depth search queries, and so are the faster option for databases which provide them, such as PostgreSQL,..."

realaleris149··on Ask HN: What is a specific use of GPT-4 that you think is remarkable?
Also, was M from Male or the initial of another name?
realaleris149··on Techniques to improve reliability
It’s a language model. You can think about it this way:

What follows after “the”? A: almost anything.

What follows after “the apple is”? It could be red, yellow or rotten.

What follows after “the apple color is”? Now is most likely a color, because in the training data there are numerous examples like these. Still could be red, yellow, green, but probably not black or white. Or maybe there was a fantasy story somewhere where an apple was black. Even if not, it is most likely a color next, and in other contexts black pops up as a color.

And so on. Is very simplistic but essentially something very similar is at work.

realaleris149··on Show HN: Color palettes generator for data visualization
Missed the fine print:

> Firefox only supports reading the clipboard in browser extensions, using the "clipboardRead" extension permission. [1]

I implemented a quick workaround with paste directly on one of the template color inputs, seems to be working.

realaleris149··on The fastest tool for querying large JSON files is written in Python (benchmark)
Had this exact issue. The UBL [1] standard has a primarty XML representation where the order of elements are enforced in the schema. It also has a JSON representation, so when going from JSON to XML the exact order is needed to obtain a valid XML.

realaleris149··on Inkscape 1.1.2
Yeap! As a developer, having a well described bug, with clear steps and conditions, is sometimes 90% of the work needed to fix it.
