readthenotes1··on Scientists Have Found a Weird Physical Sign That Someone Is Interested in You
I wonder if this will be replicable?
readthenotes1··on How El Niño Made the Atlantic Hurricane Season Disappear
People I know who used to be climate change deniers are now saying that even if it's true more CO2 is good for plants so everybody's a winner.

I am pretty sure they will say everything's for the better until it specifically and undeniably affects them negatively.

readthenotes1··on Nicholas Polson has authored 258 academic papers in 2026 so far
If the past 30 years have shown us anything, it's that academic credentials and reputation are very difficult to blemish.

Polson is just pushing the knob to 11 because it's louder.

We've been in the dark ages of science for so many decades...

readthenotes1··on Virus Stole a Human Gene and Won't Let Go of It
This must be microbe awareness day.

Earlier iirc someone posted

readthenotes1··on What makes software development engineering
The USA company my Dad was at in the late 1970s had to change all their software "engineering" job titles because the State of Texas required the licensing of people that called themselves "engineers".

The revelation came up when my Granddad reminisced laughing at the absurdity of my Dad being promoted to a "Senior Software Developer" at the age of 28.

readthenotes1··on Who Killed Paulina Borsook's Career?
You regularly use "panegyrics"?
readthenotes1··on The Beatles have permeated research papers across academic disciplines
I wonder if there is a correlation between the non-seriousness of the research papers and the permeation

There are only so many Beatles songs. Does that explain the replication crisis??

readthenotes1··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
So cover 6% of California in solar panels?

Or nearly all of Maryland?

readthenotes1··on What is the best shape of a city? Modelling effect of urban form on distance
Without getting behind the paywall, the abstract says that how far you have to travel determines how far you have to travel??
readthenotes1··on Thinking fast and slow in AI: The role of metacognition (2021)
If I recall correctly, all that fast and slow business has been debunked as yet more non-replicable pop psychology.

I shouldn't be surprised that it shows up in a screed on AI

readthenotes1··on Ten lines of code that changed my world
Mine was

someObject.changeToClassOf(SomrOtherClass);

(or something like that--i'm was long ago).

In Smalltalk, changing an object's class preserves instance variable (attribute) values when possible, silently dropping if not, and gives it an SomeOtherClass's inheritance (and method dictionaries as a result).

It forced me to realize that an instance of a class wasn't permanently coupled to be an instance of the class that instantiated it or even its current class

readthenotes1··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
You mentioned budget cuts and yet if I remember the data there is almost no correlation between school budget and results.

On the other hand, you have the Mississippi miracle, achieved at a budget increase of $35 per student, and a total budget of around $12k per student-- a far cry from the more recent example of education failure in New York City at $26k/student (elementary) and $32k/student (middle school)

readthenotes1··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Homemade Dog videos. Not sure of anything else
readthenotes1··on The Failed "Hostage Theory" of Nikole Hannah-Jones
The issues are very complex, but elementary schooling isn't.

Of course, people with motivations not entirely driven by teaching children reading, writing, and arithmetic can make things very confusing.

readthenotes1··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
Thanks! It was Paywalled, but I found this

https://globalbioethics.org/2013/12/11/did-steve-jobs-cut-th...

To restate my now better informed opinion, Jobs money allowed him to increase his chances dramatically of getting a liver transplant.

readthenotes1··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
I believe it did. There was a question of allergies anyway.
readthenotes1··on Rising sea destroys homes, erases beaches in California
Im pretty sure _don't look up_ was supposed to be a scathing indictment of climate change deniers, but it makes me wonder how many people living in low low-lying areas of the seacoast claim to believe that climate change is real and happening and vote for everyone else to change their lives but ignore the water lapping at their doorstep
readthenotes1··on Goodbye Google
Sigh. I was hoping this would be a road map to how to replace Google Docs, Sheets, and Mail from my ecosystem.
readthenotes1··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
An elderly relative of mine went to get an MRI to prove the occult fracture of the sacrum that was hobbling him.

It took about 12 hours, much of it waiting for his blood pressure to subside low enough to get admitted (a pre-requisite for the MRI).

This is in a city with of about 750k people and nowhere near Massachusetts.

readthenotes1··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
Some countries have a dual insurance system that might allow wealthier people to get better access.

Think of Steve Jobs jumping to the head of the line for a liver transplant

readthenotes1··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
Original title may be clearer?

Creatine uptake promotes dendritic cell activation and enhances antitumor immunity

readthenotes1··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
A yearn for that. My granddad tells how his Grandmom made homemade ice cream with no added sugar. Just fruit.

I am too lazy to follow: (

readthenotes1··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I guess I shouldn't believe what I read. I and when certainly wouldn't buy phone that doesn't do Android auto... Glad to hear it works!
readthenotes1··on What to do when your Waymo holds up a Secret Service motorcade
It's the secret service. Safe the runner is safe unless she's a prostitute or you happen to trip.
readthenotes1··on Comma's hands-off driving tech under investigation after 2 fatal crashes
I thought credible reporting said it was merely the Pentagon's lack of updating a decade old Target list?

I did find it darkly ironic that Operation Epstein Fury started out by destroying the lives of more young girls.

readthenotes1··on Americans' Drinking Remains at Record Low: Gallup Poll
Beer at bar $7. What did industry expect?

And, if you want to be overly precise, can you tell us the average prices and consumption for cocktails, shots, wine serving, and beer?

readthenotes1··on Americans' Drinking Remains at Record Low: Gallup Poll
Since the drinking reduction is across all ages, we're a very lonely people...
readthenotes1··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
My granddad tells the story of the time he left his parents house and they called out "Make sure to turn your burners on".

He was in his 60s....

Once a parent, always a parent, I guess.

readthenotes1··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Isn't that the Brave and adblocker model?
readthenotes1··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Just about everybody with money uses contactless payment and it doesn't look like that works with graphene so I'm not sure I would call it premium except for privacy.

Likewise, no Android Auto
