readerbaza··on Software engineers hate code
Those who like greenfields only are probably those "upgraded" to PMs and the reason is they turn green into brown _very_ quickly.
readerbaza··on The damaging results of mandated return to office
should have not showed up when asked 1/month.

...and they say the slippery slope is a fallacy

readerbaza··on Brave Browser introduces vertical tabs
Reason I dropped chrome around 2011/2012, they removed the options to have tabs laid vertically as not enough users used it (it was an hidden option and badly implemented).

Tree style tabs is the main reason I've used firefox since.

Tabs are really a bad design, maybe made some sense with 4:3 monitors but text was horizontal back then too.

readerbaza··on A blocky based CAD program
FreeCAD is a textbook example of an UI/UX "designed" by programmers. Nothing works as expected. The underlying programming model leaks out way too much. The fact that it's buggy doesn't help. And critical functionality (assemblies?) is not supported by the core team.

I'm learning it because on linux desktop there's not much else but it's a joke for professionals.

readerbaza··on Telemetry in Front-End Tools
This is the only way. Just deny by default.

I never liked Postman and that's how I mostly stopped using it. Completely stops working on analytics request denial and then starts sending reports to Sentry (but even if you allow those, they don't learn, I've tried)

readerbaza··on $39 Cooler Master case turns your old Framework Laptop parts into a tiny PC
Why must it be an "old" laptop? Get a new board and use it like a portable desktop.

I bet many people don't ever use those PCs but in 2 places (home, work)

readerbaza··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Italy historical top 3 is always cheap city cars. Usually Fiat Panda which costs ~15k€ nowadays (used to be much less).

A 50K€ base model car as top 1 is a pipe dream. It'll happen when people can't buy cars anymore and all remains is the rich and robotaxis.

readerbaza··on January 1, 2023 is Public Domain Day: Works from 1927 are open to all
Nowadays digital stores sell you the privilege to get access to said content, you own shit.

Making virtually unlimited profit on a limited initial amount of time, labour, costs is what's evil here. "X number of years" argument will never solve it (the shorter the worst the hype push will get).

Should be capped by a function of said time, labour invested plus costs and allowed profit adjusted for inflation.

I don't care how much one thinks he deserves to milk such work/invention. Look at what Nikola Tesla gave us and what he got in return.

readerbaza··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
Why every electron app feels the need to reinvent the window border/title?

Does this look OK? https://i.postimg.cc/4ymyHWxF/window-border.png

readerbaza··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
They see elimination in a positive light, because they won't apply it to themselves.
readerbaza··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
The point was well past when a git branch name became offensive (allegedly).
readerbaza··on Ask HN: How is your company training you to become a better developer/engineer?
1. companies don't "create" engineers, if they could...10x would be the new 1x

2. let people have time to spike WHILE working

readerbaza··on Up to 30% of online reviews are fake and consumers can't tell the difference
First the obvious: amazon is evil and the website is crap. Search is bad, filtering is bad, sorting is bad. All on purpose.

Here's some of my process when I don't know what I need exactly already. - try a few keywords first to find the right category - use the keywords to make the first search, depending on the item filter by 4 star and above, never by price - browse listings: - all caps BRANDNAME, skip - same picture or clearly same item from different brands, skip - listing has any badly photoshopped photo, skip Arrive at a few options: - there's customer photos/videos? check those (even if the review is fake, the photos are useful) - shipped by == amazon, if false skip - check 1 star reviews for delivery damage, if many skip or beware for delivery. amazon uses no padding most of the time. - check 3 star reviews (then 4) for sensible users making good points - always ignore reviews with "arrived fast/late" - always ignore reviews with "seller" is sold by == amazon Depending on item price, research product more and see suggested alternatives both on amazon and offsite - check reviews on those products too - check camelcamelcamel for price history - current price ok, buy - current price high, clear history of discounts, clean url from tracking and bookmark with price in the title (seldom open the bookmark, current price < bookmarked price? buy same or next day at most, price will likely increase after traffic)

readerbaza··on Ask HN: Why is there no performant remote desktop for Mac/Linux?
With Windows RDP it's possible to login in the same session that was started at the phisical machine. Also the physical monitor doesn't wake up upon login and the desktop remains password locked.

None of the options I tried on linux could match this features.

NoMachine did perform well but having the remote computer in the same room I could see it was mirroring the physical monitor and I could type on the keyboard. It does have a feature to make the screen black and lock inputs but then you're unable to log in from physical even if you know the password

readerbaza··on “Logistics”, an 857-hour movie, tracks a pedometer from shop back to factory
So...buying items made in your country is an extreme right winger thing. And if you buy shitty stuff from communist china then it's exteme capitalism.

Would you watch a real time "movie" of the countless man-years it took to design and develop the infrastructure that made it possible for you to "watch", write and publish about this? I thought so.

readerbaza··on Venice to introduce entry tickets and fees
Just a cash grab

Venice is absolute trash for common tourists. I've been there many times, never willingly

readerbaza··on What happened to the lab-leak hypothesis?
Ding! Had to really dig through the comments to find a mention of this...

Pre-pandemic blood samples were later tested and found positive in europe

Which makes the wuhan-zoonotic vs wuhan-leak a false dichotomy.

readerbaza··on Unexpected solar weather is accelerating satellites' orbital decay
how dare you! it's the evil co2

When the warning signs are ignored because they don't fit the political propaganda, then sure...it's "unexpected"

readerbaza··on Nuclear is back on the table for a green future
Apparently it's difficult to understand that extremely cheap, highly abundant energy is the only way forward. It's not only a solution in itself but an enabler to even more solutions.

Meanwhile the price keeps rising...

readerbaza··on Carbon dioxide now more than 50% higher than pre-industrial levels
Those are rookie numbers, if we try harder I'll finally have a beach house, come on people!
readerbaza··on Elon Musk Tesla email: Remote work is no longer acceptable
The main benefit of a self driving car will be sleepy commute. Obviously he wants people to commute. No need for a fancy tesla when you can be sleepy at home
readerbaza··on Working on the weekends – an academic necessity?
From the outside it seems academia is an end, not a mean. Which in itself could be the full explanation. Also explains why even in "industry", as the author calls it, there's plenty of people willing to work (or appear to) a lot more than expected/required: to acquire more money/status/position/power/etc.

When you don't care to have your name plastered on numerous publications or on some company report, saying "no" to peer/company pressure is much easier.

Bonus point: Propaganda. Movies and tv shows are full of hard working heroes with impossible schedules and deadlines (literal most of the time) which makes for interesting entertainment but terrible lives.

readerbaza··on Xournalpp++ – closs-platform, open source note taking software
I've used xournalapp++ recently mostly to sketch diagrams as I would on paper. I don't see it as a real note taking, just paper replacement.

That said what you said is absolutely true and in my projects idea folder I called this "Inner knowing". The main problem is that note taking apps are marketed as a replacement for human memory ("brain dump", "second brain", etc). Hence they create a dependency on them as they decrease the ability to remember. When infact what we need is the opposite. Also I believe it should be an OS/DE feature thightly integrated with file management/search.

Yes, i've tried obsidian, it somewhat works but it's always an electron nonsense.
