reactor··on Go Concurrency vs. RxJS
Meanwhile, Java just upped the game of virtual thread with https://mail.openjdk.org/pipermail/jdk-dev/2024-October/0094...
reactor··on CSS Grid Areas
For me its:

Flexbox -> Content first, Layout second.

Grid -> Layout first, Content second.

reactor··on Artists score major win in copyright case against AI art generators
Humans acquire a significant amount of knowledge (or get trained on) by learning from the work of others. If companies can face legal repercussions for training models on materials from elsewhere, a similar argument could be made for individuals.
reactor··on Ask HN: Storing Images in PostgreSQL vs. Object Storage for Large Datasets
Use something like SeaweedFS or Minio etc.
reactor··on Ask HN: How do you decide a non-fiction book is worth your time?
I have subscribed to a book summary app, which is not anywhere closer to what you get from reading a book, but it will give an idea of what book is worth investing time and money.
reactor··on Ask HN: Are You Religious?
There may or may not be a superpower/god. But its none of my (mere mortal) concern. So No.
reactor··on PostgreSQL 16
As other commenter mentioned, you can use pg_repack. We also had similar issue and we configured it to run every month and it works flawlessly.
reactor··on Ask HN: Are You Using Wayland?
Yes, on Ubuntu 22.04, pretty stable.
reactor··on Scaling to around 15K requests per second with Java
Not OP, but as someone who has used Spring quite extensively (6+ yrs) in the past and using Quarkus for all project these days, DX is much better with Quarkus.

Hot reloading (to the extend that change-save-refresh would feel like working with a python/ruby projects), shallow stack traces, less 'magic', , excellent documentation, plethora of modules, less memory footprint, milliseconds start/restart (owing to compile time wiring), first class container support, dev tools, always running tests are few that makes DX with Quarkus amazing.

reactor··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
Thanks for that. I can imagine, if you don't get an avenue to take the learnings from books, it may fade away. Glad that you are out.
reactor··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
Just curious, did that (reading 900 books) make any significant impact in your life/thought process/mental model etc?
reactor··on Svelte 4
https://component-party.dev/ might help.
reactor··on Is it common for Java devs to wait 30s+ for a recompile after making any change?
No. I work for a Fortune 100, we use Quarkus for lot projects, the dev reload is amazing, it just takes less than a second to reflect the change. It fast enough that I feel like I work with a Python project.
reactor··on Windows 11 in Svelte
Looks like you haven't tried Svelte for something serious. As someone who used React for a long time and started using Svelte for about 6 months now, there's no way I'm going to go back to React, the DX with Svelte has been that good.
reactor··on Google has already pulled six products in 2023
Do you think anyone beside who are vocal (HN/tech crowd esp) care about this 'killed by google' and refrain from using their main source of revenue such as Search, Gmail, Android, Youtube, Map, Photos? Zilch. GCP/Gsuite's money pouring clients are enterprise customers (not HN crowd), who for the large majority won't bother much about that either. So they clearly know their act doesn't actually make a dent in their revenue stream, but in fact that spring cleaning is a win for them.
reactor··on Adobe Firefly: AI Art Generator
But now the situation is bit different, coz there's a limit to the number of pieces before it looks awkward and that limit can be reached by AI generated contents quite easily and quickly thus not needing to have more man power.
reactor··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Svelte + Quarkus + Postgres
reactor··on Migrating from Vue 2 to Svelte
https://component-party.dev/ speak for itself.
reactor··on Ask HN: What web framework for Java worked for you and why?
Quarkus

Among others, hot-reload (in dev mode), low memory footprint, fast start, sane error messages (compared to Spring) are something that attracted us.

reactor··on Show HN: I finished v5 of a JVM framework I've spent spent half a decade making
Looks nice. Does it support hot reload? We use Quarkus heavily at work and one of the nifty feature is its ability to hot reload (fast restart to be specific) within few millisec, which makes our development quite a joy, kind of spoiled by that to be honest. If not now, any plan to support it in future?
reactor··on Ask HN: How influential can physical appearance be in professional environments?
People who are good at articulation will have listeners, but what I meant is sound without 'buzziness'.
reactor··on Ask HN: How influential can physical appearance be in professional environments?
Beside all those mentioned, I've seen people with loud and sharp (not high pitch sort of) voice getting an edge (sometimes unfair advantage) in many professional settings.
reactor··on Ask HN: Why do companies want us “back in office” despite productivity costs?
For top management, its 'more people less computer' that they work with, but for IC's, its 'more computer less people'.

It doesn't matter where the 'computer' is (Home or Office), but for top management 'people' in-person is what they all got to work with and people in general are difficult to manage remotely. Also this will help them keep anyone from moonlighting, so they prefer them in office.

reactor··on YDB – An open-source Distributed SQL Database
I guess its depends, for many use cases, it can be managed at application level. I've parted ways with FK for a long time since it created more hassles than it solved esp when it comes to sharding and replications.
reactor··on Mental speed is high until age sixty
I tend to disagree. Mental and Physical activities require intent and effort. At older stage, your willpower alone will not push you to make you get up and do it. But if you are socially surrounded, you will have something to get moving. Also, working out or doing other physical/mental activities themselves alone gets so boring after sometime, coz there's isn't much to looking forward to.
reactor··on Mental speed is high until age sixty
Yes pretty much, loneliness is a silent killer. Its so 'silent' that you won't even notice that you are declining but interestingly others will notice.
reactor··on The brain expands and shrinks over time
Age will eventually catch up, but meditation, aerobic exercise, good sleeping pattern, certain video games, good tangible social connections, exploring novel things are shown to moderate the decline. While stress/tension, sedentary lifestyle and most importantly loneliness accelerate the decline.
reactor··on [dead]
:) Played well.
reactor··on CSS's !important was added because of laws about font size for some text
Mind telling a bit more on this second part "Implement separate selectors for styling and page/component layout (separation of concerns)"? Are you referring to classes (for styles) and probably id's for Javascript?
reactor··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
As much as any other sane person, I don't support any kind of war or invasion, but this is knee jerk reaction from your side and you are punishing wrong customers, which is not going to bode well with them. Your customers are civilians, what do they have to do with these wars? I'm thanking myself now that I have already moved my domains to CF. I don't want to be held accountable for any nonsense things that my Gov/leaders got themselves into.
