re5i5tor··on Ask HN: OCR for 100 year old (German) handwritten cursive script?
I've been scripting GPT-4 Vision to extract structured recipe data from handwritten recipe cards, with very good success. Can't speak to the German language aspect.

(Edited to clarify more than just transcribing)

> Four years of Elon's dumb antics and I now absolutely will not spend a dime at any company he's associated with.

Exactly my feelings. Edit: actually disagree with “antics” — that softens reality — he’s telling us exactly who he is by his actions.

I run Pihole. How does it solve upstream DNS provider troubles; it still needs / uses them? I'll admit there's a lot of Pihole config I have not explored.
re5i5tor··on Issues with 1.1.1.1 public resolver and WARP
Switched off 1.1.1.1 for that reason a while back. Currently using OpenDNS which is now unfortunately owned by Cisco. Definitely a lack of actually open alternatives.

Similarly I have added “never buy Amazon hardware” to my ruleset. He says as he continues an ongoing battle with my only remaining Amazon device, an Echo Show.

Say what you will about Apple, they play the long game.

re5i5tor··on Why Does Flying Suck So Much? – Robert Reich [video]
If you want to get a feel for 50s air travel, check out the movie The High and the Mighty which I recently watched on Kanopy.

Also includes an insane fly-by-control-cables scene.

re5i5tor··on What happened in this GPT-3 conversation?
I had a similar situation where I was convinced that Code Interpreter had escaped its sandbox but SimonW was able to reel me in, discussed here https://mastodon.social/@Jackivers/110715505542072107

re5i5tor··on Some personal news
I was there watching. Maybe Silver doesn’t understand how to communicate verbally, only through numbers designed for consumption by statisticians. The impression he gave in his comments, if not these exact words — Hillary in a landslide.

Communication is a skill. Like the skill of a great sportscaster like Scully. Election reporting is, I’m sure, a similar unique skill set. Silver doesn’t have it, and I never want to listen to him again.

re5i5tor··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
You are correct sir!
re5i5tor··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Solved problem. The solution is NOT ChatGPT, it’s something like Bing or Phind that is a hybrid of traditional search and LLM.
re5i5tor··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Agree, this approach is my go-to for every search now (though I avoid Bing and instead use Phind.com)

re5i5tor··on Show HN: GPT-4-powered web searches for developers
Had some successes, and excited about the tool. Had a miss on this question: "what are some good articles about using chatgpt for development in the R language"

It didn't find anything, though it did respond with a number of potentially helpful general suggestions.

So I cross checked Google, found a lot of hits using "using chatgpt for r development"

Then I went back to phind and tried that prompt and ... it worked. I think asking for "articles about" tripped up ... who? GPT-4? It seems to work fine as a straight Google search.

Anyway -- FWIW.
