rdslw··on Show HN: Echo Podcasts – Goodreads for podcasts
What???

You can not trademark echo for different areas. And podcast is different.

This way of reasoning makes me speachless.

P.s. goodreads might be a case though.

rdslw··on Most popular Python packages now support Python 3
Big5 And "and had to run a team of 5 not-so-great engineers" ?

Interesting.

rdslw··on Alexa for Business
The only unanswered question is how many of them are needed per square meter.

p.s. first hand impression: one per small or medium room.

rdslw··on The Blockchain Is Bigger Than Any Bubble
the problem many praising blockchain minus bitcoin people forget, is that blockchain strength (distributed reconciliation) is possible only because of incentive (sth you get in exchange for doing all the etahashes per second).

The moment you take incentive (bitcoin) out of the equation, whole blockchain will lose its strenght.

You can not take out greed^H^H^Hincentive out of the picture.

p.s. this is black and white written in bitcoin whitepaper.

rdslw··on About the security content of Security Update 2017-001
easy: apple never acknowledged and confirmed that it made a serious mistake/offence/liability. big difference in court if someone decides to sue.

disgusting.

rdslw··on Amazon Neptune – Fast, reliable graph database built for the cloud
Yet another amazon service to lock you in.

And then after two years, when you're no longer startup with 100usd bill, but bigger company, you're completly tied to a jungle of amazon products, and your exit strategy is very very costly.

clever amazon, clever.

rdslw··on Stop Using Excel, Finance Chiefs Tell Staffs
Easy:

> Instead, companies are turning to new, cloud-based technologies from Anaplan Inc., Workiva Inc., Adaptive Insights and their competitors.

Indeed Very fast into the article I classified it as advertisment.

rdslw··on An in-depth security review of the Intel Management Engine
> I just ran the detection tool on my laptop and I am running a vulnerable version of Intel ME, but I can't even do anything about it until my system manufacturer provides a patch for it.

I would carefully analyse if patching is a good thing.

Those vulnerabilities might be used in good way to disable ME and all this intel crapware completely, while if patched, this again may be impossible without doing manual chip clip and reprogramming with external device. Of course YMMV.

Here, nice read of current way, using raspberry pi and clipping ME chip while motherboard is off: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Sakaki%27s_EFI_Install_Guide/Di...

rdslw··on Samsung DeX
I have one on my desk for few months already, but I use it only as a charger :-)

If enough people vote here (AMA style?), I'll be motivated to connect kbd and monitor and do some tests :)

rdslw··on Ask HN: I'm lonely. Are there any video chat support groups for solo founders?
I trust you're doing for the good, yet it reminded me a story I heard some time ago.

Story went like that: I'm a gold miner. Gold mining is cool, everybody wants to gold mine. So I'll teach you FOR FREE how to gold mine, but during first year I offer you to gold mine for me at minimum wage. It's a shity goldmining you're doing, as you're newbie, so that excuses minimum wage, right? And I'm doing teaching for "free", right? There were hundreds I trained to goldmine and they didnt accept my WORK (sacred word) offer. They didnt also goldmine afterwards. I call it free service and in addition for my goldmining minions get 'feeling good' from it. Others call it sieve just to find enough 'wanna be gold miner' newbies.

rdslw··on Target="_blank" – An underestimated vulnerability (2016)
Google considers (1) it unfixable:

"Unfortunately, we believe that this class of attacks is inherent to the current design of web browsers and can't be meaningfully mitigated by any single website; in particular, clobbering the window.opener property limits one of the vectors, but still makes it easy to exploit the remaining ones."

rdslw··on An Open Letter to Intel
Nope.

His letter point is clearly about widely(1) known debate(2) between him and Linus Torvalds, and ego massage.

(1) widely, if you arent 25 years old proverbial "javascript developer" ;-) - as the debate took place in 1992.

rdslw··on Bitcoin Futures Could Open the Floodgates for Institutional Investors
You can easily short BTC since 2014.

rdslw··on Google is shutting down the QPX Express API for airfare data
Reminds me a few google employers posts on HN responding to the usual 'google closes products often': we dont, and we never closed a business products, only unimportant consumer ones.

Yeah, sure.

Google is heading Microsoft 199x way - fastly becoming public enemy no 1.

rdslw··on I'm Joining Report URI
If you don't know who is Troy Hunt, then one thing to do right now is to signup for his great service: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

in essence, everytime(+) some massive break occurs, and your e-mail (and probably password) is among them after reaching "darknet" (meaning black market), you will get from haveibeenpwned an e-mail, urging you to some action (password change, account closure/change etc).

(+) Troy amassed over the years huge db of past breakins (so you can check your email presence also in past events) and with current respect/reputation he gots access to new ones pretty fast, informing you instantly in most cases.

Highly recommended.

rdslw··on Amazon now has a billion-dollar ad business
Meaning its only 2x smaller than worldwide facebook (ad) business, while growing at 50%.

Conclusion: alibaba & aliexpress are the real kings, forget about amazon.

rdslw··on New Da Vinci bio portrays a man obsessed with knowledge, impossible to know
It's not.

There is nowhere stated: reason for this article is to promote the book sale.

Knowing true reason/motivtion of somebody's actions is important. You can also draw conclusions if somebody is hiding their true motivation under pretext.

rdslw··on MongoDB shares jump more than 30% in $192M IPO
I don't buy "creating a billion-dollar business".

Ive read a Bloomberg story on the IPO and saw there two hilarious sequences "MongoDB has 4,300 paying customers. MongoDB employs 820 people in 29 offices" - that does not compute (for me) so I started analyzing their financial report (btw funny is nobody in whole HN discussion quoted numbers from the report so far, but a lot of 'im buying their stock' talks here).

In the report, scroll to the bottom where they put some cream: they show for last year 91m rev from subscriptions plus 10m from services. While at the same time they show operating LOSS of 85 millions (due to cost, people, marketing, sales, services etc). Khem khem, I know they are growing (holy world) but no, that does not compute.

Of course it is just mine opinion, and looking on the IPO results, rather unpopular one :) but I will stand by it. Especially in next 3 years. Caveat emptor.

I will short them soon.

rdslw··on Stealing Sensitive Browser Data with the W3C Ambient Light Sensor API
Part of the problem (the big one) lies here: "(filters in SVG work on cross-origin resources)" - without it, second attack (more serious) is not possible.
rdslw··on Introducing Surface Book 2
Can't help here about HP.

I know that dell xps 13" with FHD screen is very good in this regard, while dell xps 13" with 3200x1800 is mirror like.

rdslw··on Introducing Surface Book 2
LOL. This very discussion on HN. And dozens of results after googling with 'apple cpu macbook pro TDP'.
rdslw··on New Da Vinci bio portrays a man obsessed with knowledge, impossible to know
This article is a (one of many) in recent time due to promotion of new book: https://www.amazon.com/Leonardo-Vinci-Walter-Isaacson/dp/150...

Not to deny Leonardo's might, but quite similar to the pattern of (e.g.) more Depeche Mode songs on the radio signals new album/tour.

rdslw··on Dropbox Professional
Consider onedrive.

Cheaper, you can have 5seat office license and family plan.

Disclaimer: no decent linux client but macos is more less okeish.

rdslw··on Dropbox Professional
Im not from Dropbox but answer is easy: because that would canibalize on selective/smart sync feature.
rdslw··on Introducing Surface Book 2
Industry secret: apple throttles those cpu to 20W.
rdslw··on Introducing Surface Book 2
Dont.

I curse the day ive chosen 13” xps with 3200x1800 hdpi screen. Id trade it for fullhd in a blink.

Three issues:

1. It is goddamn mirror, and mind you im not picky here

2. Hundreds of apps or system parts (regedit? Wtf?) are complettly messed up by hdpi and scaling leaves you either too small or problems. Keybase desktop client (search for my bug) shows what you can expect. Windows 10 can not handle it. Gnome works more/less.

3. You dont need it on 13” screen. FHD is enough.

Oh, and you cant disable touchscreen without serious jujitsu (bios option is ignored by windows)

Simply dont. Take fullhd.

rdslw··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates
I don't agree.

Because this (not requiring PC to show VR) either means:

1) Oculus is standalone (not requiring nvidias/amd 200W+ 200USD powershouses) with comparable quality/features to what other (with PC) sets are doing currently

OR

2) it is not standalone UNLESS you have much (and here I mean much!) worse quality

ad1: this would mean that Oculus did a great breakthrough (rendering price of nvidia stock overvalued tenfold - which we don't see) while also solving heat dissipation issue (look at your typical GTX card and cooling they require and POWER they require).

ad2: currently, AAA games do require powerhouse in graphics department, and they still have a lot space to improve (from visual perspective). For VR you need 90fps lowlatency dual(sic!) rendered graphics - this brings you either subpar quality (A LOT OF SUBPAR) - hence I concluded this "no pc required) marketing gimmick of Oculus. Yep, it may work, but not at the level (not even close) to other solutions.

rdslw··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates
It does require external powerhouse (PC) if you would like to have any decent(1) virtual world.

(1) all AAA games (working on the GTX 9xx or 1xxx) are still subpar to the reality, and they're disspating hundreds of wattage. It's not possible to put it into binoculars.

rdslw··on Introducing Oculus Go, Plus Santa Cruz Updates
It does require a separate graphics card, though requiring separate PC or console.

There need to be a place to dissipate that 200W+ of power current GTX cards are using, and this is not possible to fit it in kind of binoculars.

Thats marketing gimmick Oculus is doing: it does not require phone (as daydream does) but it does require graphics powerhouse to generate all the virtual reality (unless you don't want the world to be as in current AAA games which DO REQUIRE GTX kind of power).

rdslw··on Symantec CEO says source code reviews by foreign states pose unacceptable risk
Yeah, sure. Thats the company which according to Google (March) has a huge mess in own nest of Certification Authority resulting in google chrome removing their certs: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/03/googl...
