rdrey··on LinkedIn called me a white supremacist because I happen to share a name with one
3 months or so. If the job has a trial period I definitely don't want to add all my colleagues before the trial period is over. I also don't like adding people who start at my company until I know that they're good at their jobs.
rdrey··on Ask HN: Do I have to go through recruiters nowadays, how do you find new jobs?
I don't mind disclosing my current salary but wouldn't accept any job that's not a 15-20% increase. (Not worth the disruption.)
rdrey··on Apply HN: Eat My Dust - Home testing for dangerous materials
It could just test for many things and the "data science" could do some anomaly detection.
rdrey··on Why Don't People Manage Debt Better?
Replace the word TV with 'first household car'.
rdrey··on On Marrying the Wrong Person
I have no data to back this up, but I would guess that college / university graduates also get married later in life.
rdrey··on Introducing OpenCypher, the open graph query language project
At least it _sounds like_ they've been talking to other graph DB vendors about adopting (Open)Cypher. Who knows if it's really going to happen, but it makes me slightly more inclined to invest time in Neo4J's Cypher when I finally start playing with GraphDBs.
rdrey··on Introducing Amino: Desktop Bioengineering for Everyone
My fantasy is probably limited by not being a biologist, but I'd need some more examples of what cultures I could grow with this.

> Apps will be priced between $150 and $400, depending on the DNA program and number of components.

That seems a little steep to switch cultures in the future.

rdrey··on The World Needs a Secular Community Revolution
Rotary has the lesser known Rotaract program for 18-30s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotaract Here in the Cayman Islands the Rotaract club is pretty active. (My father is a Rotarian, but I haven't felt like joining Rotaract, yet.)
rdrey··on Replete – a standalone ClojureScript REPL for iOS
Very nice! I'm busy learning Lisp/Scheme/Racket via CS61AS online and was thinking how nice Lisps would work on Microsoft's TouchDevelop. Have you thought about building a similar UI?
rdrey··on What Is Code?
Well, you could read the source of course, to see whether the photo data is sent to the server or whether the cert is generated client-side. And then there is this: https://github.com/bloombergmedia/whatiscode/
rdrey··on How safe is air quality on commercial planes?
What have you seen/heard?
rdrey··on Look Ma, no OS
Am I the only one who can't find Part 2?
rdrey··on Building an Empire with a Single Brick: Meet Patrick McKenzie
I didn't know about patio11's podcast (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/kalzumeus-software-podca...), subscribed! Great article.
rdrey··on Arduino TRE
Cool! Has anyone heard of the price yet?
rdrey··on A Survival Guide for the Small Mail Server
I'd like to second mailinabox, works nicely. Setting up the docker branch was not as straightforward initially, but most issues have been resolved.
rdrey··on Introducing Pebble Time
I don't think any smart watch == jewellery argument works, because jewellery doesn't require software updates. There is nothing timeless about modern electronics that need battery replacements.
rdrey··on Show HN: Portal - Run apps on your own easy to use cloud server
What I like about the VM-centric design you've adopted is that 'apps' are long-running by default. Sandstorm in its current form is not great for hosting internet-facing sites.
rdrey··on Show HN: Portal - Run apps on your own easy to use cloud server
Cool, thanks for the clarification. Glad you're building a single sign on feature!
rdrey··on Show HN: Portal - Run apps on your own easy to use cloud server
This runs VMs, Sandstorm runs OS containers. Apps for Sandstorm might need a little work to integrate with Sandstorm's model for users and permissions, but apps in Portal won't have a built-in mechanism for sharing documents/data and will each have individual authentication, I assume.
rdrey··on Using Infrasonic Sound to Detect an Intruder
I interpreted this design as a microphone only, not something that also emits sound. I could be totally wrong though.
rdrey··on Sandstorm – An open source platform for personal servers
I don't think Sandstorm wants to be a platform on which you host your large user-facing app. Instead it wants to be the platform on which you can install your personal wiki, ipython notebooks, your streaming media library, etc.

You as the owner of the Sandstorm instance will control whether the apps on your instance can send data to Google for Google Analytics, for example.

If you invite someone else to use an app on your Sandstorm instance, they will trust _you_ with their data and you can decide whether the apps on your instance share the data with Google or not.

rdrey··on Sandstorm – An open source platform for personal servers
Sure, you could write an app that does A/B testing, but the whole idea is that people will use Sandstorm to run _personal_ servers/apps. And A/B testing your own reaction to an app doesn't make much sense.

Runtime permissions of these apps will be easy to control, so the Sandstorm platform will prevent apps from phoning home without your permission.

rdrey··on Hands-On with Microsoft's New Holographic Goggles
You could see their faces, if they're in front of webcams, but they couldn't see your face (because you'll be wearing these.)
rdrey··on Peter Thiel becomes marijuana's first big investor
Yes. His opinion is probably "managers make worse decisions while high" => "Weed is bad for business." Which is not the same as "The weed business is bad."
rdrey··on Ai Weiwei Is Living in Our Future
I would like to design my next side-project to be decentralised and federated, giving people the option to run it on their own hardware. It's a small step in the right direction, I think, and it makes me feel slightly happier about the direction we are heading in. (With the frog definitely in the pot, but not boiling yet.)
rdrey··on King of Clickbait
Many/most sites do A/B testing and there is nothing inherently wrong with it, so why would it be classified as spam?
rdrey··on Software engineers should write
I think starting with a private blog is great advice, since it removes all apprehensions except for the "too little time" argument.
rdrey··on Programming languages and Frameworks to learn in 2015
Very nice, have never seen these Radars. Going through the history of some Platforms & Languages is very interesting.
rdrey··on Spray-on liquid glass is about to revolutionize almost everything
Interesting, thanks for the link. It seems like a highly useful material, but the fact that this is not a consumer product limits its practicality a lot. I would love to have my complete apartment coated and do it myself.
