rdrey··on How normal am I?
Your username improves this comment :P

I gamed the attractiveness model for as long as I could, trying different angles and glasses on/off and hit 9.2. If dating apps use a max() across pictures that would be great.

rdrey··on Find a good available .com domain
Your domain ideas are pretty good. You could sell your creativity as a service. 50 bucks for 3-5 name options for someone's side project, if you're that good at coming up with them you'd save everyone some time.
rdrey··on HUDS and GUIs: an inspiration resource site featuring Future User Interfaces
That's an amazing link, thanks
rdrey··on MonoLisa – A font designed for developers
I thought I was the only one doing this :P It definitely helps at smaller sizes, narrow fonts like MonoLisa simply become too faint to read easily otherwise
rdrey··on When the Stagnation Goes Virtual
Yeah. I imagine there being "metaverse clients" that don't enforce any NFT DRM and will allow you to copy whatever 3D asset you see as well. I would definitely connect with a jailbroken client / choose the "Indie Metaverse" in which none of the NFT nonsense is enforced.
rdrey··on Facebook Renames to Meta
That was interesting, great read, thanks. Following the article's argument the best thing Meta can do is build "metaverse hosting" but open-source the server/client code.
rdrey··on Facebook Renames to Meta
Could you flesh out the "federation doesn't scale" argument a bit?
rdrey··on What it's like to spend 40-50 hours in VR every week
I had a question about your Linux setup: Does Immersed VR support multiple monitors in Linux now? Or do you have to mirror a "real" 4k monitor to have it show up in your app? Edit: Ah, I've found some `xrandr` tricks that should work.

Thanks for the post!

rdrey··on Show HN: Go playground powered by WASM that runs in the browser
Thanks. I've never seen Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and this comment lead me down a great little Internet rabbit hole
rdrey··on On Repl-Driven Programming
VSCode's Interactive mode does this quite well.

rdrey··on Document your code just by hitting “record”
Just a quick heads up: I'm a weirdo with WebRTC disabled by default which broke app.paircast.io for me. Because the pricing page embeds pricing from app.paircast.io, that failed for me, too, until I enabled WebRTC.

My wife and I decided to have our kid in Portugal so he could get both of our surnames without adding hyphens or changing our own surnames. If we had opted to have him in Germany we would have all had to adopt a single (probably hyphenated) "family name".
rdrey··on Castor: A browser for the small internet (Gemini, Gopher, Finger)
Wow, this lead me down quite a rabbit hole. I hadn't heard of SDF, thanks!
rdrey··on Even with a $199 Laptop, Clear Linux Can Offer Superior Performance
Things have actually improved a lot. I'm running Ubuntu right now and drawing ~5W from my 51Wh battery on a new Ice Lake Dell XPS 13. Highly recommended.
rdrey··on Dark Horse Discord
In our early days of Zulip-use, I had to regularly edit people's messages to force them into using a topic. A handful of people still don't get it and treat topics as special/long-lived channels, but most of us devs love it.
rdrey··on How did British officers live in the scorching heat of India?
Very interesting. Also seems to apply to African ex-colonies: I live just below the "Hill Station" neighbourhood of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
rdrey··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2020?
Yeah, Player of Games is the most detailed portrayal of the "the Culture" and everyday life in the Culture Series. Also interesting use of soft power to destroy another civilization.
rdrey··on If You Can't Buy the Keyboard You Want, Build It Instead
Hah, the key I struggled with the most was 'b'. My brain was convinced that was a right index-finger key the first couple of weeks using an Ergodox EZ.

I believe "Hola VPN" did something similar as a browser extension. (You join our free VPN, you act as a node in our commercial residential IP pool (botnet).)
rdrey··on The Pragmatic Programmer, 20th Anniversary Edition, in Beta
Great news! I first found this book at the end of my first year in a corporate dev job, as I was becoming a bit bored/disillusioned with the industry. Most of the lessons were great and have improved my career. (Here's a succinct list of the Tips from the first edition: https://pragprog.com/the-pragmatic-programmer/extracts/tips)

The only piece I'd probably eliminate was focused on code generation ("Write Code That Writes Code"). The idea is fascinating and led me down a rabbit hole. I've always looked for an opportunity to do code-gen since, and have never really found a good one.

rdrey··on Vim.wasm
I recently found Oni, which aims to be a web-tech UI for neovim. (The new version should even support the full VSCode extension API / ecosystem) https://github.com/onivim/oni2
rdrey··on Marie Kondo's Advice Praised by Scientists: “Clutter Is Not a Good Thing”
My partner made me watch a few episodes on Netflix. I was pretty sceptical about finding something innovative in the show but thought her approach made a lot of sense for physical things.

I was wondering about translating it into organising my digital life. What's equivalent to step 1: Clothes? Probably video downloads or other large media in the Downloads folder that take up a lot of space and carry little emotional attachment.

It gets harder to figure out how to organize important documents, though. But they should probably be united in one "heap" first, too, maybe with annotations.

Luckily we don't need to let go of many things in the digital realm, so organising things with emotional attachment is a lot easier.

rdrey··on Organized Resources for Deep Learning Researchers and Developers
I've done Andrew Ng's Coursera specialization (deeplearning.ai) and course.fast.ai, and I would 100% recommend starting with fast.ai. (Seeing results more quickly is motivating. It's also free.) When you know that you enjoy the topic, feel free to learn more rigorous ML theory from other sources.
rdrey··on You Can’t Hide from the Corporate Cops
This is a surprisingly common way for Chinese companies to get listed in overseas stock markets. Netflix has a good documentary about the practice called "The China Hustle"

Gimlet Media has a fun podcast following a year-long mock space mission. It explores the topic of relationships in a confined space, too: https://www.gimletmedia.com/the-habitat
rdrey··on ReasonML – React as first intended
Thanks for this. I was looking for a thorough comparison with Elm. If you had to start a brand new project, which would you choose? Do you believe that struggling through the <JS, Reason, Bucklescript, and OCaml> learning curve is worth it?
rdrey··on Too Clever by Half
I would like to go back to university and take notes this time. We had past years' exams available in our library if you knew where to look, so I learned to cram before tests and exams instead of learning to take notes.
rdrey··on Introducing .app, a more secure home for apps on the web
Getting out a hotfix on uniregistry.com right now... Typically our pricing is very competitive, but haven't checked the markup on these. Sorry about the self-promotion. Edit: EAP is live.
rdrey··on Setting Up a Cayman Islands Company [pdf]
If you can pull off the tax-nomad thing. There are fewer places in which you can basically "buy" work permits and live income tax-free semi-permanently. (The Caymans will "roll you over" / send you home for a year after 8-9 years if you don't apply for Permanent Residence (more expensive).)
