rdbell··on David Rosenthal on cryptocurrencies
One of the most exciting features of Bitcoin is that it's permissionless and anyone is free to contribute and build on top of it. This is what has enabled projects like Lightning to emerge and evolve.
rdbell··on David Rosenthal on cryptocurrencies
Yes, I understand that perspective. I'm uninterested in whatever latest hype projects are sucking up money from get-rich-quick investors and it's unfortunate that the general understanding of what cryptocurrencies are has shifted, because that's how you end up with FUD articles that don't differentiate between Bitcoin and other projects.

But ultimately, alt projects don't affect the Bitcoin technology and centralized platforms don't affect anyone's ability to self-custody.

rdbell··on David Rosenthal on cryptocurrencies
Alex Gladstein has been doing good work interviewing and documenting the ways marginalized people are using Bitcoin to escape tyranny and oppression.

https://alexgladstein.com/

Anyone who understands what Bitcoin enables and still doesn’t agree that Bitcoin is valuable and good for the world has a wildly different set of values that I can’t understand.

David Rosenthal’s article says he IPO’d 3 startups back-to-back. I suspect he’s living in a different world than the people who can see the biggest benefits from Bitcoin.

rdbell··on Ask HN: Can FHE solve the PoW energy problem?
I’m not sure what the FHE part of your proposal is trying to solve but to address the main point, the “Work” in Proof of Work needs to be useless apart from securing the network.

rdbell··on Ask HN: Getting started with Web3 ("decentralized web") development
I don’t know if this is the answer you’re looking for because it’s not tied to a cryptocurrency but take a look at nostr: https://github.com/fiatjaf/nostr

It’s a protocol that allows nodes to gossip event messages amongst each other. The event relays can be used as a backend to provide data to your web/desktop/mobile apps.

Does your bank offer the option of OTP via phone call? I’ve seen cases where SMS to GV doesn’t work but phone call does.

rdbell··on My MetaMask Private Keys Stolen from GitHub Private Repo in 1 Hour
Cool project. If I pay you $900 how much of that goes into cryptocurrency?

Seems like you could achieve the same result if you just let your customers buy their own coins and provide an address for you to watch?

rdbell··on Launch: Brix – Full stack crypto payments solution
Is this a replacement for products like Coinbase Commerce? Do you have any screenshots or videos of the checkout flow?
rdbell··on Ask HN: Can payment processors like Stripe and their fees be avoided?
Take payment in crypto. Something like BCH if you want to minimize network fees. Programmatically move your funds to an exchange and convert to USD using your exchange’s API if you don’t want to hold crypto.

Easy weekend project.

rdbell··on Ask HN: Trivial way to determine between ISP and cloud derived IPs?
Depending on how motivated your users are, this could be a difficult battle for you. Even if you use a paid service like MaxMind to identify residential IP addresses, your users can tunnel their traffic through residential proxies to skirt detection.

I’d recommend tackling the issue from another angle if possible.

rdbell··on Livestream YouTube crypto scammers making so much..insane
It’s possible they’re sending to their own addresses to make the scam look legitimate.

At least I hope this is the explanation.

rdbell··on Ask HN: Best Way to 3D Scan?
+1, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I picked up an iOS device earlier this year and I’ve been pretty impressed with the Measure app for quick, rough room-scale measurements. It will be interesting to see how this tech improves with better hardware.

rdbell··on Ask HN: Can web scraping be the basis of a viable business model?
I co-founded https://packetstream.io

There are a handful of companies doing very well with models similar to what you’re describing. I can’t mention specific customers, but I see some of them doing very large scraping volume through our network.

It’s an industry where having a good product is more important than the amount you’re spending on marketing. If developers are happy with your product they’ll take it with them to future companies/projects and share it with colleagues.

It can be a cat-and-mouse development cycle where the sites you target break your functionality and you’ll have customers that will want fixes to be implement ASAP because they rely on your tools to make money.

I don’t know what you’re building exactly, but keep in mind there’s a good chance that you’ll need to commit to long-term, continuous, rapid development cycles if you want to retain customers.

Best of luck!

rdbell··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
This is sad to see. I’ve played about 300 Rapid games on chess.com and there’s only one banned player in my game history. Am I just lucky?

I’m not good enough to instinctively suspect cheaters, and running post-game analysis on all of your games seems like a big time sink for little gained.

Another possible (dark pattern) solution would be an option to only play against other paying customers. I’d assume players who have paid would be less likely to risk losing their account. This would probably be a revenue boost for chess.com but might also upset free account holders.

Also, if chess.com shadow-banned accounts by only matching them against bots instead of real players maybe they’d be less likely to immediately create a new account.

rdbell··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
Neat. Is this vulnerable to abuse by submitting bad results back to the server, or have they figured out a low-cost way of verifying the integrity of the results somehow?
rdbell··on Is Web3 anything?
It's hard to imagine any system that would solve 100% of disputes accurately, but at least having a free market of reputation-based dispute resolution providers gives you more options and attempts to weed out corrupt justice.

The thing I don't understand about all of the cryptocurrency negativity on HN is nobody's forcing anyone to use decentralized products, but the naysayers seem to insist that everyone needs to continue use existing centralized solutions even if they're not happy with them. What's so bad about letting the nerds LARP amongst themselves even if you don't want to participate?

rdbell··on Is Web3 anything?
You take the issue to a crypto court which controls the escrowed funds.

If the crypto court makes an unfair ruling, you tell everyone to never trust their judgement. Now they’ve lost credibility and nobody will want to escrow funds with them in the future.

Whichever court provides the most consistent fair rulings attains the best reputation and becomes the most utilized.

By contrast, if government courts make an unfair ruling, they’re still going to be in business tomorrow and there’s nobody that can stop their monopoly on broken justice.

Some people might argue that their western country has a fair justice system and that everyone should be glad to be subject to that system.

That argument would be overly generous to even the most fair countries, and completely falls flat in the many countries where corruption is rampant.

rdbell··on YouTube Censors Nobel Prize Winner Professor Satoshi Omura
Fair enough.

It's sad to see everything online turned political and used as ammunition against the other side. I think the reality is that (mostly) everyone wants truth to be discovered and for everyone to be healthy.

rdbell··on YouTube Censors Nobel Prize Winner Professor Satoshi Omura
I've got no dog in this fight either way, but it sounds like you're celebrating the fact that Omura can't share his opinions on this drug, meanwhile you're sharing your opinions on the same drug here on HN.

Feels a little bit hypocritical.

rdbell··on Bitmessage: A decentralized and trustless P2P communications protocol
Not trying to troll here. Genuinely curious... Can you explain this take? From what I understand bitmessage is a p2p/decentralized protocol for e2e encrypted communication and is fully open source. What sort of 3rd party trust is required?
rdbell··on Gun: The P2P database for freedom fighters
> For security purposes, we recommend you include these dependencies with your app, rather than trusting a public CDN. (Although we do love jsDelivr! It is free, open source, and give us download stats!)

Isn't this the point of subresource integrity?
