rd··on I Add 3-25 Seconds of Latency to Every Page I Visit (2020)
I swear this comment is not intended to come off as aggressive whatsoever, purely just curious. I often wonder this when I see comments like this - why didn't you just search it up? If you copy paste "gray filters on iOS" from OP comment, it's self-explanatory.

The reason I ask is because at this point, it's a trained impulse/habit for me to not ask people for things that would be quicker to search up myself. I've noticed a lot of people act the same way, but also people who lean towards asking others for everything, no matter how small a request.

Trying to understand what makes people operate that way, so I want to ask you directly - is it something intentional? I.e. is it that you might know in the back of your mind you could search it up, but it's nice to hear things from a real person, and interaction is never bad?

rd··on Waymo One is now open to everyone in San Francisco
Put a tone monitoring system to tell if the person is getting annoyed, and have a fallback that reroutes you to a warehouse of offshore comedians.
rd··on Ask HN: Where to find founders in their early 20s?
College
rd··on Ask HN: What are your favourite websites that display a lot of data / tables?

rd··on The Reddits
Quality discussions and activity don't drive normie usage, and that's what Reddit's optimizing for at this point. Feels like they want to be TikTok, but for links and images, and even the links part is slowly dying.

I wouldn't be surprised if you ran an analysis of the makeup of hot-page content across the biggest subs, if links used to make up 90%, that that number has slowly been dropping for the past 5 years to now be mostly images.

rd··on The Reddits
Same, I know one of the current devs browses HN and commented a couple of months ago that there was still a contingent of devs on the team who want to keep old.reddit.com alive - not sure how long for though!
rd··on The case against caffeine
Simon, you also live one of the most idyllic, picturesque lives possible. If I lived in rural NH with my wife and kids, I too would love the coffee ritual.

Strong disagree. For 90% of engineers (i.e. robots), it's a 100% worth it read
rd··on Omg.lol: An Oasis on the Internet
I’ve had this exact thought a million times.

The first time I tripped acid - I remember writing a page of notes on how sad I felt that I would never get to experience the exact way a memory occurred to me in the past.

What’s even more saddening is that with tech like Rewind, and what’ll be the future of Rewind in 10-20 years, by 2040, I fully expect all memories/events ever produced to be logged in an almost endless database of all human experience.

But - because time is linear, we wouldn’t ever fully be able to simulate the past of say everything before 2030? And that’s just so sad.

rd··on Show HN: Whiz – A copilot for your terminal
How is this different than https://fig.io/?
rd··on [dead]
Wesley was in my Z Fellows batch! super cool guy, his LinkedIn post where he goes over his decision in detail is worth a read.
rd··on Ask HN: What's the best thing you came across on Hacker News?
Saving this. I can't find the favorite comment feature for some reason.

rd··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Anyone who's attended an Ivy League school can attest to the truth of this, and I've been vehemently disagreeing with every anti-AA comment in this thread, so that says something.

Pretty much every Black student I see at school is African (immigrant)-American, not ADOS.

rd··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
It's a zero-sum game. There's no such thing as taking privilege "away" from Asian kids. If you increase the acceptance rate of some race, it has to be decreased from somewhere. There's literally nothing else that can be done.

Why do you think that the inner city culture has evolved to be the way it is? Say, in comparison to, Menlo Park or NYC or Virginia suburbs culture?
rd··on .ga domain names soon to return to Gabonese management (from Freenom) [pdf]
My last name is Daga and I hated that 2 letter .ga weren’t allowed. Would’ve snapped up da.ga
rd··on Launch HN: Clearspace (YC W23) – Cut back on screen time
are there docs available on the screentime API? I remember looking into doing this a while back, and nothing was available as recently as 6 months ago. would love to chat more about this if you have the time - any email i can reach you at?
rd··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a verified-only social network?
I would. I would also just continue using Twitter if I could pay more than 8$/mo and get NO ads. No ads is really all I care about.
rd··on Launch HN: Sidekick (YC W23) – AI support bot for developers
This is incredible! Such an intuitive use case and from the demo it really looks like it does the job well. Congrats!
rd··on Tell HN: My son is being bullied for owning an Android phone
Another sophomore in college here. Get your kid an iPhone. Growing up without iMessage, FaceTime, GamePigeon, when every other kid has it, sucks, plain and simple.

You’re disconnected and more than the bullying, your kid will never truly fit in. It is sad that’s the way it is, but it’s the world we live in.

rd··on Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs
This is incredibly cheap, it makes you wonder how in the world they managed to make it 10x cheaper than davinci-003 and still a better model? The world of robo-consulting is about to go insane.
rd··on Show HN: IngestAI – NoCode ChatGPT-bot creator from your knowledge base in Slack
This seems vaguely xenophobic because the OP clearly doesn’t have perfect English but it’s also funny.
rd··on Analytics: Hacker News v.s. a tweet from Elon Musk
Simon, I wrote my intro philosophy class paper on your blog post. Submitted it yesterday. Super funny.
rd··on The secret sauce of TikTok’s recommendations
It’s funny you lump in MrBeast with the other two. I’ll admit his content is 0 value, but in terms of entertainment, it’s far higher than anything else on the platform. I’d be far more upset at my kids for watching a reaction YouTuber or any influencer, than I would mrbeast.
rd··on Ask HN: Which AI powered tools are you using daily?
Copilot every single day. It's part of my work flow now, to the point where I feel uncomfortable working without wifi.

For school work, I use https://delilah.ai - shameful plug, I'm building it.

rd··on How we boosted our marketing email open rate
Dead link
rd··on Cut the Cutesy Errors
Not that I’m disagreeing with you but your bio is quite funny combined with this comment.
