rch··on Ford cutting 2024 F-150 Lightning production plans by half
Mainly Rivian, based on this news.
rch··on Ford cutting 2024 F-150 Lightning production plans by half
The industry should reset to the power/volume/mass ratio of a 2010 Toyota Tundra, and then design an EV.
rch··on Swedish Tesla strike goes international as Norwegian and Danish unions join in
I think the postal carriers are within their rights to refuse to make deliveries in support of Tesla purchases, but the government will need to explain why Tesla shouldn't be allowed to explore alternatives for customers to comply with legal requirements.
rch··on Java 8 still widely used
The ASF world is finally moving forward. Java 11 is pretty much ubiquitous, and I'd expect latest LTS versions to be supported by default going forward.
rch··on Sam Altman returns as CEO, OpenAI has a new initial board
Is the new board going to fix the product? It seems completely nerfed at present.
rch··on Shutting down the Matrix bridge to Libera chat
I mostly use it for the Fedwiki and NixOS community channels.
rch··on Dependencies Belong in Version Control
I'm annoyed that ever few months I'll start something new that I know will eventually run on Kudu and Impala (per my employer), but the local build requirements are such that it's more effective to start with Postgres and figure out porting later on. As a NixOS user, I know the answer, but I just haven't allocated the time. Maybe this holiday season... Advent of Nix or something.
rch··on After a $1.8B verdict, the clock is ticking on the 6% realtor commission
I've never seen or heard of a real estate agent negotiating to transact a property below its previous sale price, even from the buy side. That says a lot.
rch··on Create a shortcut for even lower phone brightness
Brilliant - thanks!
rch··on Create a shortcut for even lower phone brightness
I just want to be able to turn the screen off on my Pixel 8 when it's on its wireless charging stand at night.

The closest I can get to 'off' is this ridiculous setting: Very dim display (for dark rooms).

rch··on Framework 13 AMD 7040 Series: A Developer's First Impressions
Wi-fi basically works across the board. System76 cares about fan curves and other mechanical/electrical details. Battery life is easy to call out, but I’d say that the work being done now is more nuanced.
rch··on Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency
I was about to ask the same, but it's good to raise general awareness.
rch··on Ask HN: Which recent research paper blew your mind?
I went to a talk on "general purpose GPU programming" at the Colorado School of Mines around 2001 that covered exactly that topic. It was very disappointing to have my interest in FPGAs for this purpose be so entirely destroyed by a quirk of graphics card design.

Hinton also addressed the contribution of hardware performance advances to practical deep neural net applications in his talks in the mid-2000s.

rch··on NixOS and my descent into insanity
Nixpkgs is also critical for non-apprehensive people who nonetheless need to use MacOS and other distros on a daily basis.
rch··on Things that surprised me while running SQLite in production
I'd like to see a fork of SQLite that "supports the PostgreSQL wire protocol and the majority of PostgreSQL syntax" (to quote another popular db).
rch··on H100 GPUs Set Standard for Gen AI in Debut MLPerf Benchmark
Lambda seems like the easiest to work with at present.
rch··on Publishers carpet-bomb IPFS gateway operators with DMCA notices
I'd like to be able to run something like an IPFS gateway if I could be reasonably certain I'd never get any annoying legal notices or attention. Are there any community maintained hash tables of verifiably unencumbered content that I could use as the basis of a filter?
rch··on California will begin backing intentional burns to control wildfire
They've intended to do this consistently, but confounding factors like air quality guidelines have prevented them from keeping up with the required rate of controlled burns.

I can't recall exactly how far behind they are, but if they're permitted to put aside those constraints (unlikely) it'll still take decades at this point.

rch··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
FreeIPA is a compelling differentiator.

I've just started testing the port that recently landed in NixOS.

rch··on Ask HN: How to Break into AI Engineering
I'm familiar, but that definition wasn't well thought out.

Other approaches have been more widely adopted, like FINRA certs for working with trading infrastructure.

I'd much rather include knowledgeable individuals with professional authority in the loop than rely entirely on box checking as with various ISO standards, HIPPA, FedRAMP etc.

rch··on Ask HN: How to Break into AI Engineering
I've been talking up the idea of finally settling on a PE certification for software engineers (in the U.S.). It seems like most of the risks and responsibilities being discussed in the context of government regulations could be addressed with mechanisms similar to what we rely on for aircraft, bridges, power plants, etc. -- all those areas have processional credentialing in addition to bureaucratic oversight.
rch··on ASRock Brings 56-Core Xeon W3400 to Deep MicroATX
Have you investigated single phase dielectric liquid immersion?
rch··on SimulaVR's Reaction to Apple
> we are explicitly building headsets which are meant to 100% replace your PC/laptop as your primary working device.

This seems like a mistake. I'd be more intrigued if the vision was for seamless experience across workstations, laptops, phones, vehicles, tablets and kiosks with or without a stylus, and immersive computing with or without a headset.

rch··on Why Do ML on the Erlang VM?
I don't think Elixir/Nx needs to check boxes in an exhaustive point by point comparison with Python to emerge as a viable platform for ML work. It's a solid option, and that's enough for me to invest some time exploring.
rch··on React, but in Python
Sounds like Elixir LiveView.
rch··on Hyperparameter Optimization for LLMs via Scaling Laws
I just got back into hyperopt a couple weeks ago. It's easy enough and worked for me, but I was thinking there had to be some new things I'm not aware of.
rch··on Drone cops are coming for small-town America
Non-lethal munitions can also be deadly.

I could imagine drones delivering flash-bangs and the like to fleeing suspects, and all the associated risks.

rch··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
Currently I'm revisiting some proteomics work I did as part of a DARPA project a while ago, as well as experiments with cinema ready geo-located media workflows.

It helps with my day job too, indirectly.

rch··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
I was looking at a six figure workstation last week, including GPUs. The goal is to replace 2-3 loud servers in my home lab with something more compact and quiet.
rch··on Show HN: Rarbg on IPFS
Is there an IPFS dedicated to training data? A mirror of input datasets and fully open models resident on HuggingFace could endeavor to cut out onerous license agreements when possible.
