rcbdev··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Why is there such a narrow world view apparent on HN as to suggest that this is only a good quality for a human to have? It's a good quality for almost anything to have!
rcbdev··on New wild cat species discovered – with only one known living member
Never knew Bengal cats were such an issue in some countries. We had two a few years ago, they were the most adorable creatures.
rcbdev··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
I just gave the crazy man a lot of money knowing he wants to start a holy war. I did not want him to fund this particular holy war that turned out to be disadvantageous to me!
rcbdev··on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next non-uniform quantization runs on 2 RTX3090s
Didn't expect to see the 180B model running on two 3090s so fast. The open model space is moving crazy fast, improvements like always remind me of Google's 2023 memo 'We Have No Moat', which looks to be more right every day.
rcbdev··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
I keep thinking the exact same thing every time I'm asked to peer review a paper.
rcbdev··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
Every project I've ever worked on - sans two at IBM post Red Hat acquisition - had legacy style Javaboxes at the customer's DC or was still rocking mainframe DB2 stuff. I'm seeing bare-metal Kubernetes / OpenShift gaining a stronger foothold though. Rarely, some specific workloads did run on Azure - never anything critical though.

For context, I do mainly development work for EU enterprises and the public sector.

rcbdev··on 120 days until Google restricts side-loading, declaring war on Android freedom
I remember when sideloading referred to running `adb sideload` for installing applications from a remote host. The Android modding community has been scattered to the winds of time, it seems.
rcbdev··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
For what it's worth, please do not go for a dip in the Danube river proper here in Vienna, the currents are too dangerous for bathing and there is no official bathing spot anywhere for this reason. Instead, visit our other waters such as the lakes of the Old Danube or the high-water protection side-arm New Danube.
rcbdev··on I was accused of using AI in my dissertation but I wrote it all myself
That could have been produced after the fact, and even if i.e. a scanned version were provided with an eIDAS-compliant qualified electronic timestamp, it can still be argued that the student just wrote LLM output down.
rcbdev··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
I never knew that this is not illegal everywhere. In Austria, this has been illegal for as long as I can think.
rcbdev··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
We learned about how the Gutenberg Press physically worked, how it was based on wine presses and how difficult it supposedly was to produce a single metal letter. Also, how it was a PITA to re-arrange them to print something else, alas it was mostly used to print the Bible.
rcbdev··on The “mechanical miracle” that ruined Mark Twain’s life
In my school curriculum here in Vienna, this was very specifically taught in history class.
rcbdev··on Apple lied under oath to a federal court. The decision to lie came from Tim Cook (2025)

rcbdev··on After Losses, Retail Investors Flock to 3x Leverage as 2x Product Are Restricted
Exoptable Money.
rcbdev··on Big Food vs. the People
What a load of bullshit. Don't reduce human willpower and autonomy down to "hurr, durr, muh gut microbiome made me consume the slop". Of course you can refuse to give in to cravings.
rcbdev··on The development pipeline is a production system
The fix is easy and ubiquitous. You host your own artifact repository and docker registry. This also makes sure your supply chain remains easily auditable.
rcbdev··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
Truly, there is no honor among thieves.
rcbdev··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
In Austria, there is the concept of "Amtsbekanntheit", meaning if the government officer knows you, that's also valid proof of identity.
rcbdev··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Czechia, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Croatia, etc. pp.
rcbdev··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
You assume that bay area technology jobs are the norm. They seem, as far as I can tell, to be the absolute anomaly in the U.S.

Tiger insurance seems very necessary for e. g. retail, restaurant, construction etc. workers in the U.S., as they seem to be disproportionally targeted by tigers and earn next to nothing.

Everyone deserves to be treated fairly, even if they don't live in California and know how to programm.

rcbdev··on S&P Global has lowered Oracle’s creditworthiness from BBB to BBB-
> “We don’t mind losing customers” Former Oracle CEO on their unwavering support for Israel.

They'll be fine.

rcbdev··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Yes. Had.

In Europe it was the norm far longer than in the U.S.A.

rcbdev··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
That is totally incorrect for many parts of Europe. Pre-paid anonymous sim cards were used by the majority of mobile users until very recently.
rcbdev··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
> do you really believe they don't know what you do on your personal internet connection linked to your name and payment data?

Many people in the Western Europe used, until very recently, prepaid anonymous mobile data cards that they recharged monthly with charging vouchers paid for in cash.

All this ended in the last 5 - 10 years. The U.S.-American corporate glass citizen slave mentality is actually a little tad bit new here, thus the outrage.

rcbdev··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
Only because anglo-style curb cuts are designed horribly. In Austria, they are unobtrusive add-ons to the sidewalk instead of literally obstructing the sidewalk.

My conclusion, as always, is that U.S.-Americans and Brits do not walk. Otherwise these design choices do not make any sense.

rcbdev··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
Who is "we"? Do you work somewhere that specialises in the curb cut effect? Would love to hear more about your organization.
rcbdev··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
Yeah. In many countries, EMS is also heavily volunteer-based.
rcbdev··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
> [...] but only if my boss and the company decided to be real jerks about it. Another reason not to work for jerks if you can avoid it.

Worker protection rights in the U.S.A. truly are seen as a joke.

rcbdev··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
This is a lie. Joseph Biden pardoned Francis W. Biden, James B. Biden, Sara Jones Biden, John T. Owens and Valerie Biden Owens among many, many other dubious choices.

The U.S.A. is the embodiment of crony capitalism.

rcbdev··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
I never understood why you can't just take any random European country where ones company also has a presence and stick to the (government mandated) vacation time there, usually 5-6 weeks p.a. - is this considered unacceptable in the U.S.A.?
