rbjorklin··on Activists turn facial recognition tools against the police
None that I know of but my understanding was that people take issue with the police using military equipment and tactics. Most western police forces are trained to deescalate which doesn’t seem to be the case in most(all?) US states.
rbjorklin··on An update to the Timescale license
How so? To me it seems like a clause like it is required to protect their business from the "Open Distro for Elasticsearch" scenario.
rbjorklin··on The database I wish I had
It sounds like Irmin combined with the GraphQL bindings is what he wants: https://irmin.org/
rbjorklin··on Haproxy 2.2
Yup, https://www.haproxy.com/blog/hitless-reloads-with-haproxy-ho...
rbjorklin··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
I haven’t tested hard CPU quotas with Nomad but I suspect the issue mentioned above is due to cgroups/CFS and is also applicable to Kubernetes. See these slides for more details: https://www.slideshare.net/mobile/try_except_/optimizing-kub...
rbjorklin··on Migrating to CockroachDB
I have an open PR for Postgres replication handled through repmgr that has been working well enough: https://github.com/ANXS/postgresql/pull/424
rbjorklin··on Escape from System D, episode VI: freedom in sight
What do you do with your systems? I adopted it fairly early and it’s been such an improvement for me over System V. Never had an issue really.

What’s wrong with storing the logs in binary form when it’s super easy to filter and then pipe to whatever command you want?

rbjorklin··on Show HN: PNGR – Docker-compose for a Postgres-Nginx-Golang-React stack
Which is why s/he is using Nginx to simulate that in the dev environment if I’m not misunderstanding?
rbjorklin··on Announcing Yugabyte DB 2.0 GA: High-Performance Distributed SQL
The full Jepsen analysis can be found here: http://jepsen.io/analyses/yugabyte-db-1.3.1
rbjorklin··on Ask HN: Are Lucene/Solr/ES Still Used for Search?
If you’re looking for something more performant and you’re in retail I’d recommend taking a look at Apptus eSales. Their product has displaced ES/SOLR at several retail websites in Sweden. https://www.apptus.com/

Disclaimer: I’m a previous employee but have no economic interests in this as it’s not a publicly traded company.

rbjorklin··on Maybe You Don't Need Kubernetes
I’m no expert but I would say Vault and Nomad should share the same consul cluster.

Don’t deploy your Consul servers with Nomad as that will create cyclic dependency if I’m not mistaken. The same should be true for Vault.

rbjorklin··on Maybe You Don't Need Kubernetes
This should get you started: https://learn.hashicorp.com
rbjorklin··on Maybe You Don't Need Kubernetes
I’ve come to much the same conclusions as the author in this blog post and have put together a small Nomad demo in case someone is interested: https://github.com/rbjorklin/nomad-demo
rbjorklin··on To lure young talent, banks mimic tech workspaces
Is it though? The way I see it it saves me a lot of time which means I can end my day earlier.
rbjorklin··on Ibuprofen alters human testicular physiology to produce compensated hypogonadism
My understanding is that Hypogonadism can also affect women. Have a similar study been made on women? I’m under the impression that a lot of women eat painkillers to get through menstrual cramps so this could be a huge problem for women too I guess?
rbjorklin··on Firefox 64 Released
This has actually worked decently well in Fedora for awhile now by doing: `export GDK_BACKEND=wayland` before starting Firefox.
rbjorklin··on The Computer Hack That Saved Apollo 14 (2017) [video]
His Kerbal Space Profram videos are really good and informative! Highly recommended!
rbjorklin··on Recursive fibonacci benchmark using top languages on GitHub
The owner of this repo has no idea it’s trending on HN. This issue gave me a good laugh: https://github.com/drujensen/fib/issues/51
rbjorklin··on Recursive fibonacci benchmark using top languages on GitHub
Haskell and OCaml have already been merged :)
rbjorklin··on Setting Up a Fast, Comprehensive Search Routine with PostgreSQL
What about only running SOLR/Elasticsearch? That would keep the upside and eliminate the downside, no?
rbjorklin··on Introducing Jib — Build Java Docker images better
While technically correct the maven-jlink-plugin is in alpha and I’ve not yet seen any application packaged this way. If you’re aware of any open-source project doing this I would be very interested :)
rbjorklin··on Plans for OCaml 4.08
It doesn’t necessarily have to be that far out: https://twitter.com/kc_srk/status/994535108127404038?s=20
rbjorklin··on Show HN: New markup language for fans of Haml and Markdown
How does this compare to RestructuredText?
rbjorklin··on OCaml-multicore now at 4.04.2
There seems to have been some good work being done on the GC.

rbjorklin··on Types, and Why You Should Care [video]
I’ve tried Clojure a little bit and it seems like a nice language but I’m not convinced by the lack of types. Why wouldn’t you want types? How often can you reuse a function intended for ‘ints’ with some other type? The way I see it types provide important information to anyone reading the code after it was written as well as to the compiler making it possible to catch bugs early and generate more efficient machine code.
rbjorklin··on Nuclear fusion on brink of being realised, say MIT scientists
The way I’m reading the article they’re talking about a new superconductor where YBCO is one of the materials used. English isn’t my first language though so I could be off base here.
rbjorklin··on Ask HN: How do you document and keep tabs on your infrastructure as a sysadmin?
I’ve found Zabbix works decently well and also covers monitoring. Zabbix Maps can be nice to visualize the infrastructure: https://www.zabbix.com/documentation/3.4/manual/config/visua...
rbjorklin··on Intel Confronts Potential ‘PR Nightmare’ With Reported Chip Flaw
For some reason I can’t reply to ‘chrisper’ but I think ‘api’ is referring to going long in the stock market.

rbjorklin··on LastPass’ Authenticator app is not secure
For me ease-of-use is a killer feature. Do any of the alternatives you suggested sync automatically between devices? Do they auto-fill?
rbjorklin··on Ask HN: Is net neutrality overblown?
That’s what most people fear right now. It would potentially make it harder for new companies to compete with giants as they will not be able to pay the premium required to provide an equally fast service.
