For structured logging I recently came across https://messagetemplates.org/ which seems like a reasonable approach that also provides a human readable format.
rbjorklin··on OCaml 5.0 Alpha Release
The Unix bits were broken out of core earlier this year, it’s now multi-platform. https://discuss.ocaml.org/t/ann-v0-15-release-of-jane-street...
rbjorklin··on OCaml Multicore merged upstream
I just lurk the OCaml forums so don't take what I say as gospel but from what I've understood EIO will _not_ be part of stdlib. The OCaml devs go out of their way to not break things in stdlib so from what I've gathered they don't want to include it EIO until there's more real world experience with it and the API has started to settle down. Including it in stdlib might also never happen but that remains to be seen.
rbjorklin··on Austria to declare nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people
Sweden is also suggesting that if you're vaccinated you do not need to get tested. "If you are vaccinated, you do not generally need to get tested when you experience symptoms." [1]

With ~69% [2] of the population fully vaccinated that is definitely going to skew the numbers a bit.

rbjorklin··on Adapting the OCaml Ecosystem for Multicore OCaml
My understanding is that 4.14 is scheduled for Q1 2022 and 5.0 with multicore _might_ be released roughly in parallel.

rbjorklin··on Software Engineering's Greatest Hits [video]
> I also believe anyone can learn anything, exactly as you said! > But I don't find the study about grade distributions a convincing argument for that, unfortunately.

That does indeed seem like a faulty argument. Wouldn’t there be heavy selection bias? It seems incorrect to draw the conclusion that anyone can learn programming based on the grade distribution of a university level CS class.

> all the failed socialism attempts in the past 100 years, from Soviet Russia or North Korea to Venezuela and Cuba.

As someone from Northern Europe I feel the need to point out that socialism != communism. The failed states you mentioned above all have/had a communistic rule. My impression is that media in the USA portrays these as being the same and evil which I don’t agree with.

rbjorklin··on The surreal experience of my first developer job
Looking at the responses you’ve already received there seems to be plenty. I recently learned of the Tow Truck mafia: https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/w5/this-toronto-area-lawyer-ha...
rbjorklin··on Functional Programming in OCaml
The last multicore prerequisite will land with 4.13 in September. My understanding is that the next release after that due in Q1 of 2022 will have multicore support.

rbjorklin··on Ansible 4.0
I’d say that a tool like Packer is heavily reliant upon Ansible to be useful so I don’t see Ansible going anywhere anytime soon. If there’s a better tool than Ansible out there to pair with Packer please let me know!
rbjorklin··on Texas wants to charge Tesla and other EV owners annual fees
How about taxing vehicles based on their weight instead? Would scale well with trucks.
rbjorklin··on Ignoring Docker updates is a paid feature now?
I’m not on Windows/Mac so I can’t check this myself but couldn’t you just add a record to /etc/hosts for:

  0.0.0.0 updates.docker.com
Or something similar?
rbjorklin··on In Stockholm there's currently an IT battle underway
I don’t understand how it is allowed to use tax money for closed source projects in the first place.
rbjorklin··on Crystal 1.0 – What to expect
In case you haven’t been following along with the community the last prerequisite for parallelism will land with 4.13 in the next 3-6 months (guesstimate). Once that lands 5.0 is next which will have true parallelism.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said!

What’s making the PPX situation even worse is that they seem to break with every new release of the compiler.
