rb808··on We at $Famous_company switched to $Hyped_technology
$Hyped_technology is a great hiring mechanism for less well known or not popular companies. I'd take a job at $boring_company at a low rate if I could do interesting Rust projects.
rb808··on Next.js 9.4 – Fast Refresh, Incremental Static Regeneration
I tried and gave up after an hour or two. If you're a js developer it might be easy, for regular developers I didn't find it simple at all. Would be great if someone had instructions on how to create a simple blog with a nice template.
rb808··on Redfin: Vacation real-estate ‘toast’ as Airbnb owners rush to offload homes
I'd think with new lower mortgage rates vacation real estate will rise in value.

Sure, some people get squeezed in the short term, but in a year or two this will probably be all over and people will be desperate for their vacation.

Plus baby boomers are still retiring and more people are escaping big cities.

rb808··on Redfin: Vacation real-estate ‘toast’ as Airbnb owners rush to offload homes
I wish I was renting an AirBnB by the beach instead of an apartment in a big city. If this quarantine continues I might as well do that.
rb808··on Got a sweet tooth? Your gut bacteria are asking for some sugar
Modern fruit is so very sweet. I'd love to see a proper study of sugars and GI index in a 2020 Honeycrisp vs what the official stats say is in an apple. I really suspect it isn't much different from a candy bar.
rb808··on Microsoft Surface Go 2 review
I agree a laptop is a better laptop but for a tablet I find surface much better than ipad, and at a pinch (like on vacation) I can use a bluetooth keyboard and do some urgent work on it.
rb808··on Your mobile data sold, without your knowledge
The real question is if you gave people a choice of paying an extra $100 a year or having apps send tracking data, most people would pay the latter.
rb808··on AWS EC2 General Price Cut
Yeah for big iron EC2 makes more sense. Still you can find similar eg this refurbished for 6k https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/SecondaryIn...
rb808··on Ask HN: How to stop anxiety from too many choices?
But is it really a problem?

Someone here recommended the book "Refuse to choose". Its not a great book but has a gold opinion: Maybe doing just a bit of everything isn't bad if you enjoy it.

Some people want to do everything, just do that, don't feel like you have to achieve mastery or complete the project, just keeping doing these new things because you like them.

rb808··on Tell HN: Call Mom
Wait til you have kids then you'll have something in common. I hardly saw my parents for 15 years, now its weekly.
rb808··on AWS EC2 General Price Cut
Buying your own Physical hardware is so cheap now its crazy. A commodity Ryzen 16 vCPU box is about the same price as 2 months rent on EC2.

I get maintenance, electricity and bandwidth isn't free but I honestly thought cloud server prices would be much lower by now. No wonder AWS is making huge profits.

rb808··on School districts are sending WiFi-equipped buses to poor and rural neighborhoods
Isn't this a good thing though? I have friends with two middle school children and a $2mil house and they have one laptop to share. It works great and they aren't addicted to screens.
rb808··on School districts are sending WiFi-equipped buses to poor and rural neighborhoods
Easy, firstly being poor isn't necessarily a bad life, I see a lot more unhappy rich people than poor people. Secondly if you think the children will have a better life will force you to admit you have a bad life and you're doing things wrong. Thirdly a different life will mean your kids will be different and wont fit in so well, wont be around so much and might not like you - is that what you really want?
rb808··on Flight Attendants and Covid-19
I think flight attendants is probably a job that should be for people that have had CV and have recovered already. I can't imagine anyone doing that job without becoming infected.
rb808··on Flight Attendants and Covid-19
I always thought cruise ships would be great for this.
rb808··on U.S. field hospitals stand down, most without treating any Covid-19 patients
Buffalo to Montauk is 500 miles. Even something like Plattsburgh to NYC is 300 miles.
rb808··on There is one, and only one strain of SARS-CoV-2
That makes sense to me. The lockdown has reduced people getting infected from being out. There are still people getting infected and that is people in institutions (care homes, prisons, hospitals) and people in houses. Ie if one person in a house of 4 gets the virus and passes it on to the rest of the family 75% of people infected were staying at home.
rb808··on On responses to “Bye, Amazon”
Someone gets to FIRE built on the backs of the workers then gets praise for doing so. A more meaningful response would be better to donate the millions of Amazon stock he had to the workers on the front line.
rb808··on Making Emacs Popular Again
vim sucks too but its ubiquitous from smallest container build to IoT device.
rb808··on Old box, dumb code, few thousand connections, no big deal
Stuff like this worked great until someone tries to DDoS you, or found some buffer overflow which took over the box. I dont like the new world either but it was built this way for a reason.
rb808··on Neiman Marcus files for bankruptcy
People dress very cheaply now. I'm always amazed from historic photos, it seems the further back you go the more money they spent on appearance.

These days it just looks like no one cares. I'm surprised upmarket stores lasted this long.

rb808··on The Cost of Free Doughnuts: 70 Years of Regret
I thought the regret would be diabetes and heart disease.
rb808··on Ask HN: How to be fluent in functional language speak?
You're welcome. I like to think its more than that though. I recognize Spark as FP built app but its a rarity among thousands of large mainstream applications. Do you have many non-trivial examples of applications written in a functional style?
rb808··on Citing revenue declines, Airbnb cuts 25% of workforce
As a European, that isn't great. (options excepted). Usually I thought you get 14 weeks plus a month for every year of service, not a week.
rb808··on Ask HN: I work for AWS. How do I encourage change for Amazon warehouse workers?
Vote out republicans. Not just the president but every Midterm, local election. Encourage others to mobilize to elect a blue Senator.
rb808··on Ask HN: How to be fluent in functional language speak?
Give up while you can. Immutable data classes and functional pipelines are great, everything else isn't worth it. Lots of people say FP is amazing but very few people use it in the real world because like you say, its unintelligible.
rb808··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
doesn't look cheap at 5x the price of blackblaze. https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage-pricing.html
rb808··on Extremely disillusioned with technology. Please help
I think building modern software is not programming any more. Now is about putting together libraries and open source plumbing, doing a bit of customization then testing, testing, monitoring, then figuring out why things aren't working.

I remember writing a lot more simple stuff. Whole applications with maybe a handful of libraries. It was great.

rb808··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
Is there a cheap s3 compatible service that is less reliable? I dont want to pay for redudancy Eg its my backups I can handle a 3% chance that my data is lost as long as I find out about it.
rb808··on The power of admitting ignorance
>Americans, on the other hand, tend to pounce on admissions of failure or ignorance, and engage in shaming and humiliation of the person that admits an issue.

Shoutout to all the foreigners working in the US that don't say that know everything, are quiet in meetings when everyone is yelling out stupid ideas, regularly give up their design when a competing one gets promoted loudly, then never get promoted. Eventually you'll learn never to admit failure or ignorance and eventually start demanding who made the error.
