rb2e··on Show HN: Vibe Code your 3D Models
I have a suggestion, a major part of 3D modelling that many can struggle with is actually UV mapping. It can take a bit of time to do to get it right and if it could be done decently with one click with better results than with Blender or paid applications like Rizom. They'd probably be a decent market out there.

rb2e··on B. B. King, Defining Bluesman for Generations, Dies at 89
Choosing a favourite guitarist is like trying to decide between a favourite wine. So many choices but to me he has always been one of my favourites.

It hard to explain why exactly I, as a guitarist enjoy listening to his music. His heartfelt singing was warming but truthfully it the lady in his life. "Lucille". That's the name of his guitar. With her, he had this amazing tone. Its unbelievable. The way he made Lucille sing. This voice he gave her or she gave him just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I listen to the pair of them.

People talk about legacy and he has an amazing one. It's true he has Inspired so many.

But don't be sad today, be happy for the man and the extraordinary life and legacy we celebrate which will continue to live on through his music.

PS I recommend the albums Deuces Wild and Riding with the King for your listening today.

The thrill is gone...

RIP B.B., you'll be surely missed.

rb2e··on Ask HN: What's your best startup idea that you're not going to pursue?
Another one is predicting price rises and optimal time to sell Magic the Gathering cards before rotation. Its like the stockmarket only unregulated Gambling. People, do invest in these cards and flip them. Not for the faint of heart but people love to buy into dreams...
rb2e··on Ask HN: What's your best startup idea that you're not going to pursue?
A specialst book store or lending library or archive in hard to find new and seconhand books. For some subjects, amazon and its secondhand book site Abe books (?) sucks if you delve into narrow neiches. They are enthuaists out there who crave a book which will teach them something. These books are published in areas which may not be as commercial as they once were.

The neiches are small. One for example is model engineering and related subjects. Books with plans, drawings etc. Construction methods.

rb2e··on Show HN: Blot, a static blog powered by Dropbox
I would have to second this. It would make things really easy and simple to configure.
rb2e··on Show HN: Blot, a static blog powered by Dropbox
Hi, a global option to hide dates would be handy. See some people love posts to have dates on them say if you're discussing a current event, its a good idea. Other times, removing a date, makes the content seem more timeless.
rb2e··on Show HN: Blot, a static blog powered by Dropbox
I signed up. Was as simple to use as the video describes.

Things I would like added:

1)Possibility to add a seperate about page and other pages.

2)Allow for a one line blurb on sidebar to describe what the blog is all about.

3)Custom Title for blog/site. Eg <name>'s blog to My Awesome Site.

4)Option to remove date from post instead of having to use CSS display:none:

Otherwise I'm happy. Was using WordPress and SquareSpace recently to host a simple blog but felt like it was overkill. I do not like either of their mobile apps. They feel clunky compared to IA Writer.

And for me, for writing, you cannot beat the simplicity of your favourite text editor and dropbox for publishing. Whether on desktop or mobile. The combination works really well.

First impressions, am happy with blot.im. Its barebones but lets see how it turns out in the wild.

rb2e··on Google Said to Plan Separating Photo Service From Google+
You may want to try SmugMug [1]. Easy bulk mangement, simple to upload to using the Lightroom plugin, private galleries if you need them for clients. Even sell prints etc. The iPad app for viewing your own photos was good too.

I was happy with them but in the end went with hosting my own Koken [2] powered site. Its a blog/cms aimed at photographers, but you host it yourself. Again pretty to use with bulk management and Lightroom plugin for uploading.

rb2e··on All Children Should Be Delinquents
The woman in Liebeck v. McDonald's [1] suffered third degree burns to 6% of her body and had to have skin grafts. The coffee was served around 180-190F (82-88C).

On the face of it, it may sound like a frivolous law suit but if you look into the details, it was far from it.

Everyone has a story. It might be you another time so be respectful but if required be polite but firm and refuse. If its a train they will move on to the next person/carriage. If they are telling you a story, then take the lead and ask them questions. Such as they want to go home, well tell me about home. Your parents, your brothers or sisters. The cute girl in the coffee shop who you went to school with. Tell me about them. Look for consistency in the story but you have to use your gut.

In my opinion, you are better off buying them the meal and food or the ticket yourself at the next stop. Never give cash.

rb2e··on [dead]
Well you can sidestep the issue slightly. Ask what do they need the money for? If they are hungry buy them a meal at a local cafe then buy some dry food (like crackers), canned meat such as spam that can be kept in a tin till needed and UHT Milk (milk in a cartoon that doesn't need to be refrigerated till opened. Don't forget some bottle water, also low alcoholic beer may be a subtle alternative if they don't have access to a clean drinking water supply within reason (In ye olde days, drinking beer was common during the day as drinking water was often polluted) [1]. Also vitamins and supplements too.

If they need money for the Bus or Train to get home, then buy it for them. Get a taxi (you hail/pick it not them) to the train or bus station (don't walk there in case its a setup and you get robbed on the way and don't use your own car)

However, everyone has a story. For every person who is desperate and needs money, they are others who abuse peoples kind genorisity. They may use the money to buy Crack or Heroin or they made need it to buy their baby some food. You simply don't know.

rb2e··on How Do You Get a Train Moving?
You use sand to generate grip, releasing the brake gently and apply power/throttle slowly. If you open the throttle too much, the wheels will spin and you'll damage the locomotive. Don't apply enough power/throttle and the train will roll back down. It takes skill but is honestly no different driving a car and doing a hill start. Same technique.

Edited to add: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3660SX1_oE

This is a Garrett type locomotive on the Welsh Highland Railway. They are the most powerful steam locomotive type on 2ft gauge. Beddgelert station is on quite a gradient and makes for a challenging restart.

rb2e··on How Do You Get a Train Moving?
From my father, who used to drive steam and diesel locomotives in the UK on a Heritage railway (2ft Gauge).

He says strictly speaking, legally you're not allowed to reverse a train once passengers are inside without permission, but you can "rock" the locomotive forwards & backwards if you're stuck.

Procedures may differ in the USA.

I agree. Was interested in signing up or at least seeing how much it cost but there is no link from menu for plans and pricing... Pretty big deal breaker for me.

Went to sign up but sign up page was on a non SSL page. I don't like sending passwords in the clear.
