Hello world.

rayshan··on Open-source memory for coding agents, synced over SSH
This is amazing work but frankly not very helpful for me as a user. What is your top 3 recommendation? I just want to install something that works.
rayshan··on Typst 0.15.0
Thanks, good idea to give it the feedback loop, will try
rayshan··on Typst 0.15.0
Typest is amazing, Claude Code + Opus 4.8 knows how to use it, but I found that Claude by default is crap at designing even a reasonably formatted PDF. E.g. Claude sets the line height to be so small, all the lines are squished together, and a 1-pager PDF is half blank.

I see many folks saying you're producing beautiful PDFs. How are you dealing with design?

I like it! Loved hearing about your journey.

Would love to get the U.S. tax law as a dump of markdown files. Then everyone can build their own TurboTax.

rayshan··on Show HN: HN Companion – web app that enhances the experience of reading HN
This is one Chrome Extension I can't live without.

I've been using this ever since Manifest v3 killed Hacker News Extension Suite (HNES). HN comment threads are getting longer over time. Top links often have 1k+ comments now. The AI summary saves me a ton of time. I also use the extension with the new sorting function, sorting frontpage links by points, so I can focus on what's important.

What is the service you used?
rayshan··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
HoudahSpot looks cool! What kind of query do you use it for that Spotlight can't find for you?
rayshan··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
Makes sense, but how about Dropbox / iCloud Drive as alternatives? PDFs / images are somewhat small (at least relative to videos). I just stuff all my PDFs in Dropbox. I'm almost completely paperless and I don't seem to accumulate that many scanned docs to fill up even the free tier storage space.
rayshan··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
Are you talking about iCloud Drive? As far as I can tell, files in there are just normal files, so Live Text works. You can easily put a screenshot / pdf in there and see.
rayshan··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
Genuine question: for simple needs, why use this or DevonThink over macOS' built-in features? macOS now does OCR (Live Text), has tagging, and spotlight search is fast (but sometimes presents too many results to be useful). I even stopped splitting PDFs into separate documents and organizing them into folders. I just search.

It's hallucination if you hate it, and creativity if you like it.

No such layout `elk` found. Did you forget to import it and `cytoscape.use()` it?

rayshan··on Show HN: Use ChatGPT, Bing, Bard and Claude in One App
Does Poe do Bing and Bard? I couldn't find them.
rayshan··on Show HN: Build auto-updating dashboards in a spreadsheet
How does this compare to Google Data Studio which is free?
rayshan··on Launch HN: Activepieces (YC S22) – Open-Source Zapier Alternative
Looks great! Is there a way to trigger events based on Slack mentions? I'd like to build a GPT-3 Slack bot that answers poeple's questions in Slack.

Edit: filed an issue here: https://github.com/activepieces/activepieces/issues/513

rayshan··on Show HN: Filmbox, physically accurate film emulation, now on Linux and Windows
I do shoot with Fuji X-T30 sometimes, how did you know?! But mostly shooting with iPhone nowadays since it's always with me. Your links are awesome, I'll try them out!
rayshan··on Show HN: Filmbox, physically accurate film emulation, now on Linux and Windows
+1 on this as well, been looking for something since VSCO Film sunsetted. Also open to any recommendations from other film simulation for photography too!
rayshan··on Run CLIP on iPhone to search photos
Please do take a look at this. It's how I sync and store photos as well. Still happy to pay and support your development!
rayshan··on Show HN: I trained an AI model on 120M+ songs from iTunes
Interesting idea. I think it needs some finetuning to find songs that are similar but not covers. For well-covered songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, this is more like a cover-finder.

Also this song, Shangri-La Is Calling, is bugging out: https://maroofy.com/songs/1632142336

Yea fascinating to read about Pen's history. I only knew it as a low cost mass market digital camera model.

Didn't know half-frame film cameras were a thing, really cool!

Same prompts generated by Midjourney for comparison. I'd say a lot worse, but Midjourney is good at other things like sci-fi art.

Film still of a llama in a jersey dunking a basketball like Michael Jordan, low angle, show from below, tilted frame, 35°, Dutch angle, extreme long shot, high detail, indoors, dramatic backlighting.

Cool! Based on your description, I thought I can give the generator an image and it'll return the prompt. Would that be possible?

rayshan··on The Open Cap Table Coalition
This. A summary spreadsheet isn't so complex, but the detailed ledger of past and present stakeholders, securities, transactions, etc. get very very long. Spreadsheets don't scale after hundreds of securities are issued > converted > transfer > repurchased.
rayshan··on The Open Cap Table Coalition
Thank you for this! Very cool example of what can be built on top of OCF.
