Hey all! I write about decentralized wireless networks (specifically Helium)

This was great. The timeline was the perfect catch-up I needed. Thank you!
rawrmaan··on Releasing 3B and 7B RedPajama
That's a great point, I definitely overlooked these. They look pretty good, too, and I agree with your use cases.

Thanks!

Oh I definitely agree that there are multiple levels of AI research that are valuable. Huge supporter of open source, and not meaning to talk down to anyone working on AI projects.

It's just that at the moment I'm finding the open source LLM community hard to contextualize from an outside perspective. Maybe it's because things are moving so fast (probably a good thing).

I just know that personally, I'm not going to be exploring any projects until I know they're near or exceeding GPT-4 performance level. And it's hard to develop an interest in anything else other than GPT-4 when comparison is so tough to begin with.

rawrmaan··on Releasing 3B and 7B RedPajama
There was a lot of detail and data in here, but it's not very useful to me because all of the comparisons are to things I have no experience with.

There's really only one thing I care about: How does this compare to GPT-4?

I have no use for models that aren't at that level. Even though this almost definitely isn't at that level, it's hard to know how close or far it is from the data presented.

rawrmaan··on Ethereum Goerli testnet merge goes live before move to proof-of-stake
There will be forks, but only the PoS one will have stablecoins with actual backing (e.g. any value at all): https://decrypt.co/107094/circle-will-not-support-ethereum-p...
rawrmaan··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
No 12Hz is so unfortunate. Hopefully the next Pro Display XDR will have ProMotion, at the very least.
rawrmaan··on Winamp
Doesn't VLC do this?
rawrmaan··on Introduction to open source private LTE and 5G networks
Also check out the open source work of Helium and FreedomFi, who are working to help individuals easily deploy 5G/LTE offload for major carriers and get paid for data usage.

rawrmaan··on Coinbase opens at $380, up 60% seconds after opening
Ha, I thought you were criticizing Coinbase for now being denominated in a long-term worthless US dollar. Funny what happens once you realize that crypto is real money and fiat is imaginary...
rawrmaan··on Gemini Earn

No, it’s a regular sized Stretch!
rawrmaan··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Haven’t heard the term boxen in a long time :) any chance you were part of the Distributed Computing/[H]ardOCP community?
rawrmaan··on Juul is reportedly laying off 800 to 950 employees
Wow, no kidding. That is awful.
rawrmaan··on New iPhone SE
As a son, I am sad that my mom will not get to have her preferred screen size (4") in her next phone.

As a developer, I'm ecstatic that I'll never have to think about supporting a tiny 4" screen again.

rawrmaan··on GoatCounter – Simple web statistics, with no tracking of personal data
Looks like the first direct competitor for https://simpleanalytics.com, which I’ve been using and enjoying.
rawrmaan··on GoatCounter – Simple web statistics, with no tracking of personal data
For dynamic sites, new page views often happen without any HTTP requests as the app renders the page and changes the URL entirely client side.
rawrmaan··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
I think the simpler answer is that data shows that it’s good for Amazon’s sales, so they have no incentive to fix it.
rawrmaan··on Launch HN: Got-it (YC W19) – Bluetooth labels for tracking things at work
Very cool! I wonder if it would be possible to make these work with the Helium network (https://www.helium.com/).

Where does it say they’re deprecating the graph API on Nov 5?
rawrmaan··on Tinder Bypasses Google Play, Joining Revolt Against App Store Fee
I hope they are punished for this. Moves like this only hurt indie/smaller developers who don't have the resources to setup their own external subscriptions. If apps can make back even 25% of the cut, that gives them a significant advantage in UA that is hard to beat.

The 30% cut is fine. It's well worth it for everything App Store/Google Play gives you as a dev.

rawrmaan··on Slack Security Incident
What's the mystery here? It doesn't have access to your file system or the ability to request root access.
rawrmaan··on Plant trees while you search the web
I doubt they bother wasting their resources on optimizing for the 0.001% of people who have JS disabled.
rawrmaan··on Apple has pushed a silent Mac update to remove hidden Zoom web server
Probably nothing, and mutual lamentation from product and marketing people about the loss of their easiest customer retention strategy.
rawrmaan··on Apple has pushed a silent Mac update to remove hidden Zoom web server
That's pretty epic. Apple continues to make big, brave moral gestures (like when they yanked Facebook and Google's enterprise certs earlier this year, or killed long-term tracking cookies in Safari overnight).

Makes me happy to be a customer. Hope they keep enforcing their own rules and protecting their users' privacy and security in this fearless manner.

rawrmaan··on Tesla Model 3 deliveries beat Wall Street targets, shares up 7%
That’s the first argument I thought of, but people make plans based on the weather forecast too.
rawrmaan··on Tesla Model 3 deliveries beat Wall Street targets, shares up 7%
I'm trying hard to find a flaw in this argument but I can't. Good point.
