rawling··on Footguns with Postgres "at time zone 'UTC'"
In reply to

> future zoned datetime carry outright uncertainty as to their actual location on the timeline (as the zone’s offset can be updated at any point and any number of times until the event has elapsed)

I wondered if it would be worth applying a (optional?) version to a timezone when stored, so you could distinguish between "whenever it is this time in Perth" vs "when I currently think this time will be in Perth, though if Perth changes its mind on how it offsets time, I want to keep what time I currently think that will be".

But you're right, that doesn't really add anything over storing it as UTC.

Has anyone proposed versioning timezones? Or is this such an edge case it would be overkill? (Either specify your future instant in UTC if you mean to stick to that, or specify it in a timezone and accept that it could change before it happens, or if you need something else get it in a contract and don't trust the computer!)

Not "our app".

Haven't you got that the wrong way around?

If we have to come up with a technological solution to grant anonymity when people are filming, criminals can use it.

If we as a society don't go around filming everyone all the time, we don't need that technical solution available, so we can film the criminals when they are doing something criminal.

> The further back you go in Indo-European languages, they don't have articles.

Heh, while we're discussing English, this annoys me.

"The further back you go" is a continuum, the effect you describe should be too.

> The further back you go, the fewer Indo-European languages have articles.

Or match a discontinuity with a discontinuity.

> If you go back beyond a certain point, Indo-European languages don't have articles.

I'm going to the bank, the shop, the dentist, the pool - I have a regular one in mind and you may well also know which one I mean.

I'm going to a bank, a shop, a dentist - I've found a new one and I may well be about to describe it to you.

"A nice evening" - there have been ones before, there hopefully will be again, this was one of them.

I don't know... "What sets your town apart from all the others?" "It had a giant fibreglass duck" also works.
rawling··on English: A vs. An
It is. Yours is acknowledging that your things are distinguishable and the other person might want one in particular.

GP's should be used when offering a specific one, like "the red one".

I think it's down to them noticing that nothing is waiting for the result of the task and handling it differently?

rawling··on Ask HN: What would happen if your company stopped using all AI tomorrow?
I've been using it at work since we moved from TF source control to TF-Git, close to a decade ago. feature/ticketno, release/number and user/initials/...

TF at least gave a nice folder view on the branches screen, which we've lost now we've moved to GitHub, but it has made it easier to enforce.

Redirecting to the habhub UI doesn't seem like it would also let them intercept people uploading their data to habhub.
