rational-future··on The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz [video]
Here's a magnet link for torrent users:

rational-future··on IntelliJ IDEA 14 Early Preview is Available
Hmmm, I never had such a problem with Scala and Idea. How big are the projects you're working on? Maybe your computer is just slow.
rational-future··on Dart 1.5
Do you mean that Chromium now has a Dart VM? The last time I checked it didn't, there was a buggy thing called Dartium.
rational-future··on Why Astronomers and Journalists should pay heed to Biologists about ET
Why?
rational-future··on Why Astronomers and Journalists should pay heed to Biologists about ET
That view doesn't strike me as very Kurzwielian. IMHO that would be more like:

1. A singularity happened in a human civilization, that was 1st to evolve in it's galaxy.

2. That civilization turned all the energy and matter in that galaxy into computronium.

3. They run a 10^70 simulations and we are inside one of those.

rational-future··on Why choose Xamarin?
The big question IMHO is will Microsoft buy Xamarin or not. If they do the price will certainly fall drastically. On one hand it will give MS way more apps on their app store. On the other if Xamarin becomes very popular Apple may block Xamarin built apps from it's app store.
rational-future··on Why Astronomers and Journalists should pay heed to Biologists about ET
A friend of mine is professor in genetics in Columbia university. He spent many years experimenting around the RNA world hypothesis and his opinion is that the origin of Earth life was a very unlikely event. Once in a Universe unlikely.
rational-future··on Why Astronomers and Journalists should pay heed to Biologists about ET
Or an alternative explanation - our space capabilities have risen constantly since 1957 and the Appolo missions were a Nixon administration PR hoax.

>> guarantee the presence of fossil fuels

Absolutely not. Just recently a bacteria (or maybe an archae, I can't find an article) was discovered that efficiently breaks organic matter in anaerobic conditions. There is a sharp decrease in the amount of coal formed after that bacteria evolved a few dozen million years ago.

It's just an accident, that we are the 1st life form capable of extracting the energy from fossil fuels.

rational-future··on Use of Drones for Killings Risks a War Without End
Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex in the speech draft.

Pretty much `they` have won and we - the 99% - have lost. Queue the downvotes ;)

rational-future··on Use of Drones for Killings Risks a War Without End
The drones are taking poor man jobs.

rational-future··on Why The Cool Kids Don't Use Erlang
>> JVM does global stop-the-world garbage collection

Does it? Back when I was in HFT, we were definitely running a JVM with background thread GC.

rational-future··on Go support for Android
C# lets you develop games that run on Windows, OsX, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Xbox and PS, while sharing all non-UI and parts of the UI code.
rational-future··on I’ve Worked with Hundreds of Recruiters – Here's What I Learned
Under some conditions they do. Many founders don't have extensive social networks to recruit from. A fast growing company needs to fill positions and sometime the only time efficient way is to work with a professional recruiter.
rational-future··on Stockholm – it's not a coincidence
I'd only recommend moving to Sweden, if you have a family and want a stress free 37.5 hours job. Practically free, but very good healthcare and education for your kids, high pensions and unemployment benefits.

But on average you'll have to live in a lot smaller house/apartment, make less money after taxes, suffer the cold climate (unless you love winter sports). The startup scene is 1/1000th of the Valley.

rational-future··on Stockholm – it's not a coincidence
Skype is not Swedish. It was developed in Estonia and incorporated in Luxembourg.
rational-future··on Stockholm – it's not a coincidence
Stockholm is not much more expensive than London really. Try Oslo and the rest of Norway for expensive - ~30% higher prices than Sweeden, Norwegians make shopping trips to Sweeden on weekends.

IMHO when you're in a foreign city you don't know where to shop cheaply, so it feels more expensive than your home.

rational-future··on Is direct P2P microlending financially sustainable?
Western union will often take over 5% of a transfer through fees and extremely greedy exchange rates. A BitCoin transfer on the other hand is virtually free.

IMHO there will be a high overlap between people using a lending startup and Bitcoin users, as both are modern bank alternatives.

In my humble experience exchanging Bitcoins for cash was hard a couple of years ago, but not today. All my geek friends and colleagues use it.

rational-future··on Brazil's billion-dollar gym experiment
Wow, what's up with all the negative comments on HN?

Brazil has $2.5 trillion annual GDP, according to the World Bank it spends 9.3% on health. That's over $200B. Even if this project costs $1B annually, IMHO spending .5% on effective preventation is a great idea.

rational-future··on Expedia Starts Accepting Bitcoin for Hotel Bookings
Honestly, the cynic in you may say everyone buying a kitchen knife plans to cut a child throat, but that won't decrease the usefulness of kitchen knifes.

Damage deposits - not something Expedia does with credit cards or PayPal, hotels have to ask their clients for a credit card at check in.

Rewards - it's just a matter of time for Bitcoin rewards schemes to appear.

rational-future··on Expedia Starts Accepting Bitcoin for Hotel Bookings
Suing a startup company with no tangible assets is not much of an insurance. How much does it cost for the biggest travel company in the world to set their systems to accept bitcoins, pass a contract through lawyers, train support, etc? I'd say at least as much as the value of appearing in the news.

So IMHO Expedia sow the huge value of the BitCoin payment system.

rational-future··on The increase of genetic complexity follows Moore’s law (2013) [pdf]
Your two arguments are extremely weak and bunk ;-) You are only objecting names and have nothing to say about the content.

I'm not an expert in biology and have no idea how good this paper is. I was getting a PhD in math from West Virginia Uni in early 90s. Sharov was visiting at the time and had build a reputation of a pure genius.

rational-future··on China's campaign to bulldoze mountains to build cities
Sure, ghost cities in China... Out of the thousands new developments in the recent years, four were slow to populate (mainly because supporting infrastructure was delayed).
