not about pron, its about control and making sure everyone breaks some kind of law and can be broken/coerced
rasz_pl··on (Ab)using Google's Chromium EC for your own projects [pdf]
Blinking leds is one thing, hiding encryption store is another.

Remember a story of GCHQ going over Guardians Macbook with a dremel and destroying every single chip capale of storing bits?

rasz_pl··on Pixel Recursive Super Resolution
You could exploit debayering artefacts.

In fact I wonder if any imaging sensor vendors run R&D trying to come up with novel neural net based debayering approaches - this could be a cheap way of bumping image quality/perceived resolution.

rasz_pl··on Chrome 56 adds Web Bluetooth API
sure, like plugins

oh wait, where did my plugins configuration go? why cant I disable plugins I dont want?

rasz_pl··on Chrome 55 removed manual encoding selection
reducing complexity, sounds familiar. I think Gnome did that between 2 and 3.
rasz_pl··on What Vizio was doing behind the TV screen
Do you watch cable? Every single settopbox is designed in a way that makes tracking viewing habits trivial and every cable company does this.

The difference between smart 1080p tv and dumb one is $15 LCD controller from ebay.

All this amazing automation and deep learning and Google still spams me with pewdiepie and other meme lord YT drama garbage suggestions despite clicking "not interested" hundreds of times.

rasz_pl··on Homebrew Amiga Graphics Card (FPGA, Open Source) Finished [video]
Amiga shipped with planar graphic modes, this card supplies chunky modes. Planar was great for ~10MHz CPU when moving 1-2 color images on the screen, but totally failed when technology moved on to 8-16bit color depth.

You could even argue Doom killed Amiga as a gaming machine.

rasz_pl··on Chrome 56 adds Web Bluetooth API
because 20 year old 'developers' grew up with 3GHz laptop CPUs. Fast computers make stupid ideas, like python or ruby, sound ok for production.
rasz_pl··on Tested: The truth behind the MacBook Pro's 'terrible' battery life
Video playback is no longer a benchmark with Hardware video decoding units that let CPU practically shut down 80% of die space. People actually expect to USE the laptop like a computer, not like a movie watching on a toiled tablet. As the last test shows using CPU shows new laptops to be worse than the 2015 models.

Btw Did this macworld.com writer run out of bytes on the page? was that the reason he had to split this article in two? or was it just for additional ad impressions?

nothing? open hardware badge is a big ball of mess with people using it whatever the way they want. Initially it was a great idea, but life finds a way :)

Lenovo diagrams are not reverse engineered, those are original manufacturer documentation, with notes, diagnostic info etc.
rasz_pl··on Circuit building: stop using antique parts (2014)
not smart, but old school and embedded in big companies Devkit alone is >$1K and you wont be able to do anything with it without couple of $K in software and maybe even support contract. All that for ~$10 Arm Soc performance.

"fully open hardware" is a loaded misleading term, Just look up the mess open hardware logo is in, and different people involved trying to salvage it. Dave Jones/eevblog has some 1 hour long rant videos about it, he even redesigned this logo with some additional stipulations.

The fact is you can get full(1) hardware documentation for X220 and know what every single resistor/transistor/capacitor is doing. This part is easy. Thanks to hardcore hackers we also have full source of embedded controller firmware, meaning we control every aspect of this laptop. Here is an example Lenovo X230 repair showing off power of existing documentation http://imgur.com/a/V5FjN

On the other hand we got this olimex abomination with 5 year old phone specs, load 3 tabs in Chrome and you are running out of 1GB ram.

(1) The only thing missing for building your very own X220 are pcb layout files.

rasz_pl··on John Carmack on expert witnesses and 'non literal' copying
Lack of history is a clue system was wiped or reinstalled from scratch.

Its very difficult to make windows appear to be an old actively used install. Encase (or new software, I havent done forensic for >6 years now) will tell you everything about timestamps and what that means.

which part of Allwinner A64 SoC is open? Do you mean the open source code Allwinner packaged into their binary blobs loaded into black boxes on the chip (like image coprocessor)?

Meanwhile I have full X220 schematic + boardview, EC (system management controller) source code (dissembled, but still), full bios source, and the best build quality money can buy right now (1).

(1) some might argue Apple, but those people dont repair laptops ;-)

rasz_pl··on TERES I DIY Open Source Hardware and Software Hacker-friendly laptop is complete
it would with coreboot

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/5p3mpm/how_to_fla...

+ https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec for EC sourcecode

besides Allwinner A64 = tons of binary blobs, often containing gpled code and openly violating open source licenses

You could (well couldnt, all listed out of stock) have this, or Lenovo X220 with IPS screen Edit: with 8GB ram and 32GB mSata SSD, still <240Euro.
rasz_pl··on Apple Said to Work on Mac Chip That Would Lessen Intel Role
about 5 hours, just imagine how thin new macs could get!!1

look at iPhone 6 for clues - Apple replaced 0.1 mm thick piece of metal rf shield with a sticker to make it thinner, that removed metal can was reinforcing pcb and all the bga chips, without it iPhone 6/6+ bends, cracks balls under important ICs and develops touch disease.

rasz_pl··on Facebook Ordered to Pay $500M in Oculus Lawsuit
This is simply not true. Valve had precisely ZERO VR research up until 2012. Thats when they finally decided to pursue hardware and hired Jeri Ellsworth to build hardware division.
rasz_pl··on Tesla Model S: the story of a very short happiness and excitement
This sounds so bizzare to an European.

Here you leave the car at the dealer, go to the reception and ask if they will be providing replacement car or have a preferred rental company.

rasz_pl··on Chrome Widevine DRM can no longer be disabled
>Hmm, their contact form keeps failing with cryptic error messages, but never explaining what I did wrong.

it used to barf helpful error messages (including info it should give like internal network details), I reported it and got a thank you email ... and immediately got banned from their forums :)

rasz_pl··on Seagate will bring a 16TB hard drive to market within 18 months
Because 128GB piece of second/third grade flash is ~$20, and those go into cheaper SD cards/usb drives. $160 in cheap memory alone.

There are manufacturers playing aggressive race to the bottom, they make drives with neither ram nor even SLC buffer. Mostly JMicron and Silicon Motion controllers, but more and more companies jump on this opportunity like Marvell. Im not even talking about garbage bin chinese "vendors" like kingspec/kingdian/kingrich/ki..you get the picture, I mean SanDisk Z400 or OCZ TL100, proper manufacturers.

At the end of the day those are pretty much USB pendrives with switched PHY, you can expect same prices and performance. That also means drastically lower write endurance, ~20-40TB Total lifespan. ~20GB/day in an age of Windows 10 writing ~1-2GB of logs(you know, so they can upload them to ze cloud, harmless telemetry ..) alone every single day.

rasz_pl··on Chrome will aggressively throttle background tabs
No. Vivaldi like new Opera is just a skinning project. They made UI slightly better, added some missing functionality (mostry tabs and gestures), but they do not touch core engine.

Case in point fresh Vivaldi on startup makes 4 connections to Google just to say hi, and will keep sending google delicious pieces of data throughout the day, not to mention hardcoded google DNS in case yours is too slow. How about spamming my local network with chromecast UDP garbage? or enumerating shares on startup? WTF would you even do that?

Ps I use Vivaldi :/.

rasz_pl··on Chrome will aggressively throttle background tabs
Even in Opera it is less about throttling cpu usage, and more about coalescing wakeups/timer interrupts.

There should never be a situation where background tab cant even get a 1 second timer running reliably, unless its trying to compute pi at the same time.

rasz_pl··on Chrome will aggressively throttle background tabs
This is design issue, inefficient data structures, lazy programming etc.

Im affraid tabs taking 2MB(two megabytes for a page with javascript, not 20, not 200, two) like in the good old Opera 12.16 wont come back :(
