raptorraver··on Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits
I found them few years ago and lately been thinking how they are doing and feeling in this age of slop and exponentially growing energy consumption. Seems they are doing fine and have written their own spreadsheet software to handle their finances: https://merveilles.town/@neauoire/116762882177707632 Super cool!

Also their Permacomputing 101 gave a lot to think.

Feeling inspired to finally learn C properly and never touch AI tools again :)

raptorraver··on Do teams still use scrum and sprints?
Never ask woman her age. Man his salary. Or scrum master what the fuck he's doing all day and why is he getting paid so much.
raptorraver··on Ask HN: Semi lucrative careers after tech?
3 years ago we started a small regen farm focusing on pastured poultry. Started with 150 laying hens, this year we have 1000. Also raising pastured broilers on the side. I’m still freelancing but plan is to become fulltime farmer next year.

Poultry is a good business but definetly not an easy one. Learning curve is steep, days are long some times, but I feel like completely different person after day of farm chores compared to yelling at LLM’s.

raptorraver··on How I use Claude Code: Separation of planning and execution
I’ve been using this same pattern, except not the research phase. Definetly will try to add it to my process aswell.

Sometimes when doing big task I ask claude to implement each phase seprately and review the code after each step.

raptorraver··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
I made a composition for string orchestra and male voice from that poem 10 years ago. It's a very powerful poem.

raptorraver··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
> Lately it's gotten entirely flaky, where chat's will just stop working

This happens to me more often than not both in the Claude Desktop and in web. It seems that longer the conversation goes the more likely it is to happen. Frustrating.

raptorraver··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
It got bankrupt in 2021 in an aftermath of the breach. I think they sold some of their operations forward before that.

The actual breach wasn’t that advanced hacking. They had copied their production data with all the patient information to test database which was publicly available and had default credentials.

raptorraver··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
> Companies that had their entire database of very sensitive information leaked are still growing users and at worst paid a tiny fine.

Or end up bankrupt with criminal charges for CEO: https://yle.fi/a/74-20027665

raptorraver··on Ask HN: What are you building as a side-project or side-hustle in 2026?
I started developing a SaaS for pasture poultry producers like me. We have laying hens and on summer we raise broilers and keeping records and organizing work was painful last season. We used Google Sheets but it’s easy to forget to update those. I’ve vibe coded it few evenings and gotten much further than I anticipated.

My goal is to get some revenue from this during next year. But if I don’t I still have one very happy daily user: me!

App can be found from www.pasturegg.com

raptorraver··on Car has more than 1.2M km on it – and it's still going strong
I wonder how many of the cars manufactured today are still here after million kilometers. My guess is none as they are impossible to fix yourself.
raptorraver··on Claude for Financial Services
Ah, I misread and thought that ” AI ate code, now it wants cashflows. Is this finance's Copilot moment?” was original title.
raptorraver··on Claude for Financial Services
Isn’t the original bit clickbitey title?
raptorraver··on Chicken Eyeglasses
Nowadays they do the same using red lights in industrial egg production, if pecking becomes a problem in a flock.
raptorraver··on Ask HN: What is your fallback job if AI takes away your career?
AI agent therapist
raptorraver··on The dark side of the Moomins
Don't have time to read through the whole article. But just wanted to point out that there are also Moomin cartoons which have really politically uncorrect stories: like Moomins travelling to spain, trying to buy opium but eating some weird drugs instead and then staring for sea for a week and missing their fligth back.
raptorraver··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Around 25€ per day + VAT. They lay 240 eggs during day now thay it’s winter. We sell them 50snt/each (VAT included). We feed them soyfree organic feed.
raptorraver··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
Started selling pasture raised eggs last summer. First we had a flock of 150 but soon we ordered 150 more. We kept them in the Susckovich style chicken tractors[1] and sold directly to customers through Reko-rings (Facebook based farmers market). We gross around 3k€ per month with around 2000 euros profit per month. The chores take 1-2h per day and the deliverys around 3h per week. Our web page is at www.paivarinne.farm It's in Finnish but at least the pictures are nice :)

raptorraver··on Prayer, Placement, and Absolution: Peter Hristoff on Islamic Prayer Rugs (2015)
Especially monks and nuns do prostrations as part of their prayer rule. Some do hunderds, some do even thousands prostrations during their prayers. We use prayer rope when recitating Jesus Prayer[1]. Prayer rope helps count the prayers but also it gives your hands something to do while praying, so it's easier to focus. I usually have one in my pocket and I roll it in my hands secretly while in meetings or sometimes even during typing code. I don't really pray then but it reminds me of the spiritual reality and that my boring Teams-meetings and stupid Jira-tickets aren't the purpose of my life ;)

raptorraver··on Prayer, Placement, and Absolution: Peter Hristoff on Islamic Prayer Rugs (2015)
There are variances in the traditions also here. In Russian tradition all the people in the Church do prostration during the eucharist prayers where wine and old are turned into Communion, and also before they partake the Communion. But in Greek tradition they don't do any prostrations during the liturgy. Prostrations aren't forbidden on Sundays but if you partake Eucharist you are not allowed to do prostration during that day.
raptorraver··on Three hundred words you can spell on a calculator [pdf]
In Finnish same. We actually have a separate verb for that kind of laughing: hihittää.
raptorraver··on Ask HN: What Technologies Should I Learn to Quickly Secure a Remote Position

raptorraver··on Arvo Pärt's Journey
Thank you for the documentary link. I've been looking for a certain Pärt video I came across years and years ago without success. But now took a small peak to that and I think this is it!
raptorraver··on Arvo Pärt's Journey
Pärt's speech at St. Vladimir's Seminary is worth watching [1]. Extraordinary figure. Greatest composer of our time and - I'm afraid - last great composer.

My second favourite Pärt-clip is Björk interviewing him. [2]

raptorraver··on Ask HN: What's your favourite startup that didn't work out?
Like kagi.com?
raptorraver··on Making 'food out of thin air'
We already produce food out of thin air using plants. It’s called photosynthesis. If you don’t want to eat those plants yourself you can feed them to ruminants and they’ll turn them to meat and fertilizer for you to grow more food out of thin air. It’s more nutritious and tastes much better than these weird inventions.
raptorraver··on Rejecting GMOs hinders human progress and keeps the poor hungry
We already produce way more food than is needed to feed the all the people in the world. It's not about the amount of production but how we distribute the food and what are the intensives when doing that. Giving more power to ag-corporations haven't worked past 30 years and I have no reason to believe it will in the future.
raptorraver··on Show HN: AI climbing coach – visualize how to climb any route based on your body
Cool project but please delete it. You’re taking the fun part out from bouldering and just leaving us the labour ;)

Edit: apprently I wasnt the first to make this joke. I emphasise that this is Really a cool project. Great job!

raptorraver··on Fishing for oil and meat drives defaunation of deepwater sharks and rays
You're propably correct about the feed ratio but cows eat grasses and hay that aren't consumable by humans. In warm countries that's not a problem, people could grow there crops that humans can eat, but in big parts of world (like here in north where I live) grasses are best thing to grow. Also grasslands are best carbon sink we currently have (https://climatechange.ucdavis.edu/climate/news/grasslands-mo...) and you can't have those without ruminants.

Also it's good to remember how much food we waste each year. We could easily feed the world already now but it doesn't seem to be priority for the people in charge.

That said I'm on a same side with vegans, I don't like the current way we produce food and I'd like to see a big systemic change there. But I think vegans don't take into account how complex problems we are dealing with - nature, agriculture's economics and eating habits and nutritional requirements of humans.

raptorraver··on Fishing for oil and meat drives defaunation of deepwater sharks and rays
It's not cow but how. Modern agriculture methods are very destructive for the environment. The biggest problem isn't even the greenhouse emissions but the way we are destroying the living topsoil by our methods and then trying to fix the problem with fossil fuel based systems - diesel based tilling and fertilisers. Veganism can't solve those problems either. Luckily there is a growing movement of regenerative agriculture which focuses on the soil health and maximing the carbon sequestering to the soil. It also makes much more sense from the financial point of view for the farmer.

raptorraver··on How I listen to music
I'm a trained classical music composer and it's shameful how little of music I ever listen. I usually have couple of songs that are in a power play but I very seldom listen any other music. On a contrary I have melodies and song ideas playing in my head all the time. But I'd sure like to find more time to listen through the classics from time to time.
