raptor99··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you really do have to assume the worst about any of these "AI" companies, especially the large ones like ChatGPT and Anthropic.

They literally lie, cheat and steal at any opportunity they have and in any way that they think of. Do not trust a single thing that they say; it is a fool's folly to do so.

A lot of this can already be said about a lot of companies, especially almost any large company, but it goes doubly if not triply so for this new breed of company now.

raptor99··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
So you know you are smart and you know your programming but you can't show it because you just happen to have a now popular, talked about, and referenced condition that inhibits you from your own known greatness. OK.
raptor99··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
LOL "I measured an 8x increase in the number of commits Ive been pushing" is an absolutely useless statement

raptor99··on The dangers of California's legislation to censor 3D printing
Do you even realize what you just said? Oh hey why even go to a nearby Home Depot when you can drive over to an entirely different state instead. Really?
raptor99··on What have been the greatest intellectual achievements? (2017)
Hmm, I wonder why that could be. Perhaps because most LLMs have ingested scads of utter online shit in, so guess what comes out.
raptor99··on Seven countries now generate nearly all their electricity from renewables (2024)
Whew, very glad that a leading scientific voice like DiCaprio is speaking of this to world leaders. Solid foundations.
raptor99··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
Agreed! Have you heard of Suchir Balaji?
raptor99··on NASA’s Artemis II Crew Launches to the Moon
You are right. China should be ashamed of itself.
raptor99··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
lol Way to jump to a conclusion and then use it as your basis for your entire comment. Most people don't want some expensive fake ass meat that is so packed with chemicals and additives that they would rather just buy meat instead and eat it, even if it isnt as healthy as it could be if it were raised more sustainably and naturally than most of it is nowadays.
raptor99··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
I think nature nailed the texture of their burger patties. When you fry one up it has the same texture as a beyond patty. Nature's sausage links also have a similar texture to beyond sausage. I think nature nailed the taste a bit better than beyond. Also nature seems to use better ingredients than beyond. All these products are high in sodium like all processed food and you definitely shouldn't live off them, just like you shouldn't live off beyond burgers and sausages. Price-wise they cost less per pound than beyond. For any vegetarian or vegan you should definitely amuse yourself and fry up some of this natural meat and try it out.
raptor99··on Debian decides not to decide on AI-generated contributions
lol You are actually trying to argue and say "Oh actually, I love how AI fucks up, it makes me keep on my toes."

That's like saying I love hiring fuck ups that randomly do out of context and out of ruleset work for me when I ask them to perform tasks.

I would also argue to you that "folks" have done more well to debate the upsides of AI. It is pretty much all I ever see when I come to this website any more the last couple of years. Oh, and by coincidence, the operator/owner of the website just happens to be at the helm of ChatGPT. How convenient.

raptor99··on South Korean ex president Yoon Suk Yeol jailed for life for leading insurrection
Wearing costumes establishes costumes and illustrates the joviality of at least a portion of the attendees of the event. It would be odd to say that it is immaterial that you went to a concert or a restaurant or any place really, and lots of people were dressed as Vikings, or as SWAT, etc.
raptor99··on South Korean ex president Yoon Suk Yeol jailed for life for leading insurrection
I would also say that this is the correct way to handle a former president that was elected as the result of a rigged election.
raptor99··on FBI raids Washington Post reporter's home
Yes, I hope things similar to this don't happen in this years midterms, like they did in 2020.
raptor99··on FBI raids Washington Post reporter's home
Dude, the Capitol Police are the ones that let them ("J6ers") in to begin with. The whole thing was a set up from the get go.
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
Right on.

If the goal is to fix student grades instead of just documenting it, the points counted off need to escalate with repeated incorrect answers. The first incorrect answer can be treated as an honest mistake. But when the third or fourth quiz still shows the same incorrect answers, the grade shouldn't be the same C; it should decline sharply. At some point the cost of ignoring the problem has to exceed the points from letting it continue.

You just solved education!

raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
Yes, yes of course. The leftover smell of homeless urine by the front door isn't real; it is only carefully calculated scents piped in by corporate dollar store yuppies to have you believe this is an authentic experience.
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
LOL it just seems that no business can do right here. So these low margin stores should just shutter and close up shop because they are somehow still "screwing poor people"? Would you commend them if their business just infinitely ran at a loss or gave people cash at the register instead of charging them anything for the items that they want?
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
Not really sure where your examples or experiences come from, but the majority of rural people that I know love most of their dollar stores.
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
LOL yeah OK, are we just making random statements now?

Yup. Outback Steakhouse is worse than a fast food store like McDonald's, it's an expensive not fast food store.

raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
It doesn't sound all that monopolistic if there really are as many different places to buy it at cheaper prices as you say in your same comment...
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
So these big chains have drive out all competition. I assume you are referring to the big chain dollar stores. So how did they drive out all competition? Did they do it by charging more for items or by charging less for items? I think I am failing to see any sort of logic in the argument here.
raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
Aw man, that is such a rip off!

Grocery stores are a rip off too. The per unit price of items at them are astronomical compared to Sam's Club prices.

Sam's Club is a rip off too. The per unit price of items at them are astronomical compared to the wholesale price.

raptor99··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
So you are saying that Dollar Generals tend to open in areas where there isn't already a store that sells anything like food or otherwise? So would people in that "food desert" be better off without Dollar General opening a store? Because the only way I see that is feasible is if you only compare the reality of this situation to the fantasy ideal that isn't reality at all.
raptor99··on What you can get for the price of a Netflix subscription
The main reason that finally pushed me to move over was that Plex works local only (no internet connection) for only so long and then you are done for without a beacon/login home I guess. Dumbest "feature" ever but I guess I get why they do it.

We had our power and internet go out for an extended amount of time earlier this year and shortly after I converted us over to Jellyfin vs Plex. Quite easy and painless setup. Mostly just recreated my libraries in Jellyfin and good to go.

raptor99··on An attacker’s blunder gave us a look into their operations
I caught that feeling through the whole article. Like, was this user really that distracted or inept to forget he installed a Huntress trial, or was this all for some larger, more insidious reason, or distraction?
raptor99··on An attacker’s blunder gave us a look into their operations
Why would they NOT do this? They are a fucking cyber security company. It should be no surprise to anyone that a company that specializes in endpoint security software would be analyzing this shit non-stop, even for trial versions that users run. That's how their software works!
raptor99··on YouTube is a mysterious monopoly
Do you happen to know if there are any project or talk of not archiving the video content itself, but instead the transcripted content instead? I feel that this would be very advantageous to archive knowledge based (versus delivery based, such as prank and stand up comedy) videos much more efficiently than the videos themselves.

Someone below brought up a very good point about many of these videos being much longer than they need to be (mainly for reimbursement and ad reasons). If the transcripted content can be archived, it could also be abridged and/or summarized as well as being combined with other similar video content as well.

I'm sort of thinking as I go here now, but I would think that perhaps Youtube has an API that lets you access the closed captions of videos?

raptor99··on YouTube is a mysterious monopoly
Why do you think every single streaming provider and platform does checks every so often to see if you're still watching? It's not because they are being nice; it's because it is costing them money, even the huge companies.
