raphaelj··on Developers of small modular reactors hope their time has come
Where do you get that data from? I checked on electicityMap [1] and the British wind farms are producing more than 6 GW at the moment [2].

raphaelj··on Ask HN: What has been your experience with bigger tech companies in London?
Workers in UK also work less than their US counterparts (paid holidays, parental leave, sick days ...) [1]. Would make more sense to compare these countries by hourly income, not yearly.

raphaelj··on Ask HN: Is anyone else genuinely scared that this is the start of WW3?
Doesn't Russia already have access to the Black Sea ?
raphaelj··on Ask HN: Why Isn't Starlink Built on Solar Powered Drones?
That's nice, but these do not stay in the area, and have to take into account air currents.
raphaelj··on Why Vladimir Putin and his entourage want war
It's already driving gas prices up, which also has some effect on oil prices.
raphaelj··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
https://noisycamp.com

A web platform I created 3y ago to help Musicians to find spaces to practice music.

I'll most probably not be able to live on it, but it might generate some income.

raphaelj··on Europe Is Losing Nuclear Power Just When It Needs Energy
Past spending are actually not relevant, as renewable got significantly cheaper, while nuclear got more expensive.

Solar is today 5x less expensive than it was in 2010[1].

raphaelj··on Ask HN: How do you validate demand for your side-project?
Would you be interested in a call to share experience?

I'm currently developing a similar platform for music practice space (https://noisycamp.com).

raphaelj··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
I hope to reach $500/m in early 2022.

I'm making a web app to help Musicians finding and booking places to play Music: https://noisycamp.com

raphaelj··on European alternatives for digital products
Well, you will pay these 20k only the 40-ish years you'll work, while you'll pay your US health care insurance until you die. The average American pays more for healthcare over their live than the average European, and the outcomes are objectively worse.

Also, EU governments provide retirement benefits while the US's doesn't. This is the main expenditure for these governments.

Not saying that your argument has not some truth in it, but it's definitively wrong in the case of healthcare.

raphaelj··on Ask HN: Would you like me to review your resume?
Not really my resume, but I just created my Portfolio website: https://rjavaux.be/.

Let me know if you can find anything you would improve :).

raphaelj··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
Could it be because we just got slightly better at treating Covid before hospitalization?

raphaelj··on Ask HN: Smoothness and performance of Qt based systems vs. native apps and OS
Except that Qt might not be loaded/initialized by the time you launch your app.
raphaelj··on Ask HN: Smoothness and performance of Qt based systems vs. native apps and OS
Most Linux and Windows apps do any significant computation except when relying on (usually) native/C/C++ libraries that do it (GUI, science stuff, IO ...). So it does not really matter if it is coded in Python, C# or C++, as most of the CPU time is spent on native code anyway.

Code quality is a way more important factor in app perceived slowness.

raphaelj··on An error message if you put more than 2^24 items in a JS Map object
It's easy to imagine some app to reach that amount of keys pretty easily. Like games, scientific simulations or GIS apps.
raphaelj··on Ask HN: Who wants project feedback? (August 2021)
I'm developing https://noisycamp.com, a platform to help musicians to find and book spaces to practice music. I'm also helping music studios by making it easier for them to manage their bookings.
raphaelj··on 'World longest' (330m) solar panel bike path opens in Utrecht, Nederland
What problem is it even solving? We are not missing space to put panels on, we need to make them cheaper. This will only make panels more expensive and maintenance cost will rocket.
raphaelj··on Show HN: Survey of 10k freelancers, their salaries, locations and tools
It looks gorgeous, but it's totally inadequate to show the data. Plus the way the scrolling gets hijacked is frustrating.
raphaelj··on Summary of June 8 outage
Use a short TTL on the CDN subdomain you use. Then setup an alternative CDN provider in advance, so that you can switch from one to the other in a matter of minutes.
raphaelj··on Fastly Outage
> The internet is designed for redundancy. Wonder why these companies don't have a fail over network. Makes me wonder if cost is factor considering their already massive infra. But a single point of failure ..

Well, Internet was indeed designed for redundancy, and it worked as intended. A no point in time it failed to make you reach the server it was supposed to make you talk to.

What are failing are all the application protocols that are running on top of the network.

raphaelj··on Fastly Outage
Only their main website though. My Heroku apps work pretty well.
raphaelj··on Fastly Outage
Couldn't be happier I moved https://noisycamp.com to BunnyCDN.com.
raphaelj··on Fastly Outage
But they have competing products through AWS.
raphaelj··on Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2021
Well, it might be true for some positions, like engineering, but it definitively does not apply to all of them.
raphaelj··on There have been 7M-13M excess deaths worldwide during the pandemic
The more cases you have, the more overwhelm your testing system is. The difference in death rate is most probably due to the fact that Finland was testing more positive cases (relatively) to Sweden.
raphaelj··on There have been 7M-13M excess deaths worldwide during the pandemic
And that’s with all the safety measures most of us have been following for more than one year now.
raphaelj··on Live feed of Starship SN15 flight test [video]
Any idea why they shutdown some engines during ascent?

Seems efficient as you are fighting gravity with less acceleration and more dead weight.

raphaelj··on India’s second wave of Covid-19 feels nothing like its first
Parent was referring to the doubling rate.

Cells produce more than one additional particule per reproduction cycle, so the doubling rate is lower than 8 to 72h.
