ransom1538··on AWS claims its cloud faces competition from on-premises IT
No, AWS market share is 99%. Go to any conference regarding cloud ever. Vendors just laugh at GCP, what a joke. Azure mayyybe 2%.
ransom1538··on AWS claims its cloud faces competition from on-premises IT
Lol. I hope this is sarcasm. They have zero competition and 100% lockins. I would say AWS is a national threat at this point.
ransom1538··on Warning: DNS encryption in Little Snitch 6.1 may occasionally fail
Wait until you try to get the mac address on an iphone.
ransom1538··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Lol. No politicians that pass these laws.
ransom1538··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
US tax codes prevent hiring software devs. No one is going to hire US software devs ever again. (Good voting guys!).

ransom1538··on Apple Watch sleep apnea detection gets FDA approval
Can you post this app?
ransom1538··on How to Lead Your Team When the House Is on Fire
If you don't know what a 5 month run way feels like, you haven't experienced life. It really helps you understand what is important to projects and wtf isn't.
ransom1538··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
I don't let my daughter date anyone that can solder (or carnival workers or clowns).
ransom1538··on Exploiting CI / CD Pipelines for fun and profit
100% of the script kiddies moved to .env and .git. My logs are filled with request for GET /.env 404. All the kiddies focus mainly on those two, I think the return is the best for their effort. The .env file is super trendy now and used across languages now.
ransom1538··on Bypassing airport security via SQL injection
Well my username, "\\'\truncate table user;;\''" has served me well over the years. But some sites I cannot log into for some reason.
ransom1538··on Your Immune System Is Not a Muscle
IHMO An old myth, I believe: Your immune system needs something to fight, otherwise, it starts finding problems that aren't.
ransom1538··on Finding a therapist who takes your insurance can be nearly impossible
Canada: Sure you will never see a doctor, but, when you do it is free!
ransom1538··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
Bet he wishes he added those back doors now.
ransom1538··on Amazon is bricking primary feature on $160 Echo device after 1 year
To have a useful alexa instead of 3 of them unplugged in the garage? I mean... its a step towards making money.
ransom1538··on Amazon is bricking primary feature on $160 Echo device after 1 year
Alexa should just use chatgpt, you would have a trillion dollar empire in 10 minutes. That would useful. Otherwise, alexa is usually dumber than my dog.
ransom1538··on How I Use "AI"
gpt: give me working html example of javascript beforeunload event, and onblur, i want to see how they work when i minimize a tab.

10 seconds later, I am playing with these out.

ransom1538··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
From your link:

"It (Operation_Mongoose) was officially authorized on November 30, 1961 by U.S. President John F. Kennedy."

JFK was shot in the head (most likely Oswald visited Mexico City and the Cuban and Soviet consulates). So... even more bad gambles by Cuba.

ransom1538··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
OR. They lost a gamble. They picked Russia over the US and lost, big.
ransom1538··on RegreSSHion: RCE in OpenSSH's server, on glibc-based Linux systems
If you are on GCP and don't have time to patch, GCP recommends turning off your port 22 for now. https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/security-bulletins

1. Find things that are 0.0.0.0 port 22, example, https://gist.github.com/james-ransom/97e1c8596e28b9f759bac79...

2. Force them to the local network, gcloud compute firewall-rules update default-allow-ssh --source-ranges=10.0.0.0/8 --project=$i;

ransom1538··on A bunch of programming advice I'd give to myself 15 years ago
"Good developers are just as in demand now as they have ever been."

Citation needed.

ransom1538··on Do not try to be the smartest in the room; try to be the kindest
The title was worded wrong, I think engineers (at least me), would make more sense out of: "The world needs more good people, the world does not need more smart people." Engineers often confuse "good people" with "smart people". But they are not related at all. And no, we don't need more smart people optimizing ads. We need more good people helping.
ransom1538··on Hacker confirms access through infostealer infection [withdrawn]
Snowflake employees need time to sell off all their shares. This news will hurt the SNOW stock price big.
ransom1538··on Russia's glide bombs devastating Ukraine's cities on the cheap
Ukraine is literally banned by the US from using US ordinance in RU. But at this point, Ukraine better break some rules.
ransom1538··on Pyinfra: Automate Infrastructure Using Python
You mean terraform?
ransom1538··on Pyinfra: Automate Infrastructure Using Python
Stupid question. Ansible is mentioned TWO times in HN hiring thread, it will soon be zero. Isn't this dated tech? Ansible is good at patching servers (have cute names, make sure they are patched). Patching??? But, why not use containers? Aren't we moving away from Ansible/Puppet? I would much rather have AWS/CDK or pythoninfra like this if I was into pet machines.
ransom1538··on 30% of Children Ages 5-7 Are on TikTok
Like I tell my parents, taking away "The love boat" rerun away from ME on channel 4 when I was eight, IS NOT LIKE taking away a phone from a kid today that is playing Roblox. Roblox is NOT a rerun of a horrible 70s show. It is a fully immersive, awesome and a complete social network. I view it closer to cocaine.
ransom1538··on Autotuner: How to speed up your Rails app
To save VM instance costs (not disks)? Probably never.
ransom1538··on EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down
China is approving new coal power projects at the equivalent of two plants every week, a rate energy watchdogs say is unsustainable if the country hopes to achieve its energy targets.
ransom1538··on Apple's risky bet on CarPlay
"Give me a car with a simple backup camera, manual transmission, and regular sized vehicle (no trucks or suvs, fuck that)."

Mazda, cx5 <= 2016. Small. Has usb sd, simple knobs, backup camera. It reminds me of when apple removed the escape key, I had to learn how to buy a used mac.

ransom1538··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
"claiming you have to obey Libyan laws and regulations"

I always smile when bosses want everything to be GDPR compliant. I am not sure why these laws are more important than the laws from the Chilean Navy. Why are we clicking on cookie popups? We think the EU is smarter than the PII laws from Cameroon? Elitism I say. My websites follow strict guidelines set by proper Constitution of Cameroon doctrines. Every fourth visit to my site we dump all contents in html form (obviously).
