randycupertino··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
> somebody in the Trump campaign forced somebody at NASA to do this out of some misguided nostalgia.

Trump is a huge fan of Top Gun, there is an article he is nitpicking current aicraft carrier design and pushing them to revert to old tech steam powered hydrolic liftoffs because he thinks it looks cooler. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/donald-trump-navy-st...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/aug/13/trump-aircra...

He also nitpicks where the towers should be located on aircraft carriers and wants them to look more like the ones from WWII: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/08/15/...

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/trump-to-order-redesign...

Bringing back the SR-71 for nostalgia/cool factor tracks reverting to steam hydraulics liftoffs and overhauling the aesthetics and tower location to look like old warships.

randycupertino··on Ophthalmology Researchers Manipulated Images in Eighteen Papers [video]
Fraud researcher/molecular biologist Sholto David is back exposing more faked data, this time by a group of Ophthalmology scientists who doctored images and data. Sholto previously successfully sued Harvard's Dana Farber Cancer institute under the false claims act for $17 million (his whistleblower cut was $2.6 million) for faking research and lying in publications funded with government grants.
randycupertino··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
There absolutely is a contingent of "wine mom" types who used to enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings but have transitioned to gummies or other edibles before bed.
randycupertino··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It's mealy, tastes pasty and bland with no flavor. Honeycrisp so much better tasting and texture! Red delicious were bred to have a dark red outside and look like a classic "apple" while sacrificing the apple flavor inside.
randycupertino··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Almost a bigger threat than astroturfing is biased parties, be it brands or brand managers, taking over as moderators to sway content and suppress content they don't like. Happened in a bunch of artist and influencer subs.

I'm sure reddit will kill it at some point like they did Reveddit and Unddit, but it works for now.

randycupertino··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
- Tariffs so less international demand for US wine

- Canadian boycots of US products due to tariff wars

- Boomer wine buyers dying off

- younger generations drinking less overall and being less into wine

- everyone on GLP-1s drinking less

randycupertino··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
I think it's their frustration of other things they can't control - climate change, K-shaped economy, PFAS in everything, no healthcare, 7% and rising mortgages for $1.5 million 1000 sq ft built in 1965 shitboxes, corruption by politicians, suppressed elections, pedophile rings operating carte blanche while law enforcement casts a blind eye, presidential pardons for sale to the rich, clawbacks of longstanding LGBTQ and women's rights... culture wars against trans people to distract from class inequality.... and on and on.

Well, I can't make much progress on or change those things so let me distract myself checking out this shitbird who won't help his wife or hold the baby while she gets some nachos. I can be outraged at him because it's small and tangible compared to being outraged at structural inequality of our current economic reality or the looming climate crisis.

randycupertino··on Starbucks to close 250 stores this week
> While Starbucks closes some stores, it's remodeling others. On Wednesday, the company announced plans to accelerate coffeehouse redesigns that bring back chairs and a cozier vibe to cafés. Starbucks said it will complete at least 1,500 "uplifts" by the end of fiscal year 2026 and ramp up further in fiscal 2027.

> The company also said it plans to open a technology hub in India next year.

At least it sounds like they are rolling out comfier chairs.

randycupertino··on Surprise, Meta's latest AI gimmick is just underpaid humans
It was reminding me of the AI cleaning robots who turns out were just third-world workers watching on cameras directing the robot what to clean. After it came out that humans were driving the robots remotely they changed their branding to "AI-assisted remote human teleoperation."

Also Waymo does this and some robot delivery company.

randycupertino··on I don't want the details
I recently had a vendor CAPA rejected because the root cause was listed as "data entry error." Oh no, the root cause can't be data entry human error! It has to be that the deadline was too tight, or they were rushing, or they were distracted etc etc. I ask the vendor, were you distracted? No. Were you rushing? No. Just a simple typo. Update root cause to typo. Oh no the root cause can't be a typo it has to be the free text field in the form design that allows for typos. It's a process error that there's not an automated QC to catch these typos! Etc etc.

> Who wants bigger phones? Who is like, "damn I wish I had a tablet that I could fold up and still barely fit in my pocket"?

I literally just got 7 pairs of pants tailored with bigger pockets so they could hold my freaking phone without it falling out all the time. I would love a smaller more petite phone.

randycupertino··on Apple Watch Series 12
For workout tracking depending on your sport the Garmin is way better- for swimming the lap counter and for hiking the trail maps on Garmin gets more granular and better for tracking. For skiing the altitude tracking and vertical distance is better on the Garmin.

For phone, calendar and work integration the apple watch is better (I have it hooked up to take calls from the watch) so I ultimately went with the apple watch even though my triathlon training tracking was better on the Garmin!

randycupertino··on Novo Nordisk's Wegovy helps free 40% of kids from obesity in phase 3 trial
> Novo Nordisk has reported a phase 3 weight-management win for Wegovy in children, with two out of five kids no longer classified as having obesity after receiving the GLP-1 drug for 68 weeks.

> Wegovy, the brand name for semaglutide for indications including obesity, is FDA-approved to reduce body weight in people aged 12 years and older. Yet Wegovy and other GLP-1 drugs are increasingly used off-label in younger children, with a recent study finding that prescriptions in kids aged 8 to 11 jumped from 0.03% in 2019 to 9.3% in 2026.

> Novo’s Step Young phase 3 trial suggests the younger children may benefit from Wegovy. Participants received weekly Wegovy injections of either 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg, based on their weight at the start of the trial, or placebo. All participants were assigned a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

> At baseline, more than 85% of the children had either class 2 or 3 severe obesity, corresponding to a BMI of at least 35 or 40 in adults, respectively. At Week 68, 40.4% of patients on Wegovy were no longer classified as having obesity, compared to 0% of their peers on placebo. The result reflects the effect if all children adhered to treatment.

> “We are encouraged by the positive Step Young results and semaglutide’s potential to help children living with obesity who need medical treatment, alongside lifestyle changes, to better manage their obesity,” Martin Holst Lange, M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific officer at Novo, said in a statement. “This may prevent serious health risks later in life.”

> Obesity is increasingly common in younger children, with one study finding that 20.7% of kids aged 6 to 11 in the U.S. have the condition. Weight-related complications emerge earlier and more severely in people who have obesity from a young age.

> Novo plans to share detailed trial results at ObesityWeek 2026 in November. The topline press release lacks safety and tolerability data, with Novo only saying that the profile was consistent with other trials and free from concerns about growth or pubertal development.

> The readout comes as Novo works to get back on track after a bruising period in which it lost ground in obesity to Eli Lilly. The launch of an oral formulation of Wegovy has given Novo renewed momentum this year, with the product making and maintaining a fast launch despite competition from Lilly’s Foundayo.

> Prices were 21.6 percent more expensive on average in Google AI Mode compared to a traditional search for the same product.

> “This is a fascinating study that reveals more about Google’s Shopping Graph and the inconsistencies between classic search and AI Mode for free listing placements,” said independent SEO consultant Brodie Clark in a statement shared by Productrise.

> When searching for products using prompts like “metal bidet attachment” or “manual grinder stainless steel,” Productrise found that recommendations inside AI Mode for the same product listed in traditional Google searches were consistently more expensive.

> In addition, only 1.28 percent of products the company analyzed appeared in both traditional search and AI mode “for the same search on the same day,” indicating that it’s relatively rare for recommendations to overlap. And when they did overlap, the actual seller differed 49.6 percent of the time, Productrise found.

randycupertino··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I think of my mom who doesn't care and doesn't understand the difference between google AI Overview vs actual google search results. "I looked it up" - she doesn't care what tool she is using she just wants answers to how long bake pork or the best throw pillows to buy or whatever else she is looking up.

She's mostly using google AI tools because it's easy and free and on her landing page.

randycupertino··on ArsenalBio sheds most of staff in pivot to in vivo CAR-T
> The downsizing marks another low moment for a biotech that was once a fundraising powerhouse. ArsenalBio raised $325 million two years ago with the backing of Bristol Myers Squibb and Regeneron, and also boasted a partnership with Roche’s Genentech.

> ArsenalBio’s goal at the time was to develop CAR-T therapies for solid tumors, an area of notable difficulty. There are currently no approved CAR-T medicines for any solid tumors, only blood cancers.

> B. to his venerable master A., greeting. This is to inform you that I am studying at Oxford with the greatest diligence, but the matter of money stands greatly in the way of my promotion, as it is now two months since I spent the last of what you sent me. The city is expensive and makes many demands; I have to rent lodgings, buy necessaries, and provide for many other things which I cannot now specify. Wherefore I respectfully beg your paternity that by the promptings of divine pity you may assist me, so that I may be able to complete what I have well begun. What's interesting about this one is he didn't catfish as an actual 49ers player he used his own photos and his own name (and variations thereof) and faked his bio claiming to be a 49ers player.

> Love allegedly used other names to perpetuate the scheme, including Jon Love, Daejon Love, Avril Lyto Love and Jordan Love.
