randomopining··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Are you remote or are there actually offices there of engineers?
randomopining··on In Mongolia, a killer winter is ravaging herds and a way of life
I'm making the assumption that whoever is sharing the knowledge has valuable knowledge. Offering value for free is the definition of benevolence.

I don't know the case, so yeah if it was just people without knowledge coming in and forcing it on them... ok.

Yeah sharing knowledge for free is definitely hubris. For sure.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Are You Happy?
Same dude you make money and then lifes comfortable but no challenge
randomopining··on On whether we're living in a simulation
Because it blows up the whole discussion doesnt it? I think this whole thing is a form of nerdy pseudoscience.
randomopining··on On whether we're living in a simulation
The Simulation thing is one of the biggest pseudo-science discussions ever. What exactly would be the difference between a simulation and the "real world"? Nobody ever says anyting about that. It makes the entire question preposterous.
randomopining··on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not
These days I feel like when I'm around close friends and family I want to have mutual experiences. We're already on our phones so much, etc that it takes away from that.

I feel like this is for loner people who want experiences

randomopining··on Ask HN: What's a productive day of work for you?
Minimizing or eliminating wasted time (scrolling, etc) is success for me. That means I spent time on something productive or relaxing or enjoyable -- all of which are wins in life.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Getting old and boring – What can I do about it?
I think people move on from the early/mid 20's vibe, aren't as interested in the glamour of going out, etc... and then all of a sudden they think "I'm old!"

It's definitely a different distinct stage, like a true young adulthood. Can last like 26-40 or so for some.

randomopining··on Ask HN: Getting old and boring – What can I do about it?
39 isn't old haha. Maybe for the hostel circuit but not much else.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Getting old and boring – What can I do about it?
Doesn't working out give you more energy in the long run? It does for me but you need to be balanced and don't consistently overtrain.
randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
Yup. And some will even try to discount your opinion by "assaulting the messenger", saying that you're economically privileged by being a programmer etc etc.

It's very hard for people on both ends of the spectrum to take, analyze, and respond to a statement by itself and not to the person who is saying it.

randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
Cool, and thanks. I think my comment is completely reasonable and obv it started some decent discussions.

Replacement is defined as "a person or thing that takes the place of another"... when a town has 100 people who are German, and then in the future it is 50 Germans and 50 French -- the Germans have been half replaced by the French. It's a simple term, and I'm using it 100% as it is defined in our English language.

What part of my proposition is unfleshed or unsupported by facts? It's not like some 100 page dissertation, it's a comment on HN. Of course you could spend weeks discussing anything in the detail it deserves.
randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
Everything you said is factual. Colombia - great it was a drop in the bucket, they speak the same language and integrate, and it still is a big albatross on society there. US - mass European immigration meant that people needed to learn english to integrate, same religion caused easier integration, etc.

It's not nearly 1:1 with the current situations in the US and Europe, respectively.

I'm just saying that mass immigration has effects on the country, the people, the economy/housing, the way of life, etc.

People should fully understand this and then vote accordingly. It's something to openly discuss and digest, not something to be swept under the rug or "downvoted".

randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
1. France accepts large amounts of immigrants - Fact. 2. There is no separation in these stats by country of origin, race, etc - Fact. 3. It is proven in numerous stats around the world that immigrant reproductive rates are much higher than native peoples in the West - Fact.

Given these facts as I've laid out, it is really quite inflammatory to call a proposition "BS" - especially without any contradictory evidence provided.

Free speech is vital to a functional democratic society.

randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
Yup it's a very straightforward concept (notice how my post contained nothing false, emotional, or bigoted), and yet it gets downvoted by a sect of people who simply cannot allow "this type" of free speech to exist.
randomopining··on France sees collapse in births to lowest since World War Two
So basically natives don't reproduce, we import more immigrants who reproduce much faster, and those immigrants leaving their homeland allows more "growth space" for the existing people there.

That's essentially a population replacement on the planet-scale, isn't it?

randomopining··on Ask HN: Has the tech recession affected you?
as an engineer you make good money
randomopining··on Ask HN: Has the tech recession affected you?
Didn't they have a lot of savings? If I had 50k saved I would never take a grocery job.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Has the tech recession affected you?
US is producing more Oil under Biden than it ever did under Trump.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Has the tech recession affected you?
How is that even possible? There's a demand for engineers for sure... no?
randomopining··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
Trump's MO is to "make a deal" where we actually lose out but he gains face with his supporter cabal.

Biden has literally said that we would defend Taiwan. China doesn't want to risk defeat. With Trump they know they can make some sort of weird deal to essentially get the win. It's not like the military would operate any differently in a conflict, the Pres barely influences their plans.

randomopining··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
Why would Poland and Scandinavian countries become friendly with Russia? Poland's massive military build up is specifically to counter Russia.
randomopining··on Ask HN: Engineers who quit careers and moved to South America, tell your stories
Prob more dynamic and interesting day to day getting lost in another culture, compared to going to a 9-5 in some boring office and writing the same boring code. Sterile life.

Good to mix it up once in awhile.

randomopining··on Ask HN: How is your early retirement working out?
Saving on all of that person year is like 2k bucks max. That's a drop in the bucket. Plus then you come off as a weird cheapo, no? All so that you can sit around and do nothing while retired. Which sounds boring and probably bad for your mental health.
randomopining··on Ken Griffin sees Miami possibly replacing NYC as finance capital
That's the point though. It's basically just beaches and a little South America. People speak spanish and.... ok that's about it. Money and spanish. NYC has that and much much more.
randomopining··on Ken Griffin sees Miami possibly replacing NYC as finance capital
Miami is kinda uni-dimesional city isn't it? NYC is one of the only world cities.
randomopining··on US Smartphone Shipments Decline 19% in Q3 2023 as More Americans Delay Upgrade
And yet I still bought the 15 pro. Slightly faster and lighter with slightly better camera!
