random_cynic··on Introducing deep research
I think that's mostly because of the access to information it has. Much of the highly useful information is not on the public internet or shows up on search engines, only domain experts know about them. Also, the websites may be paywalled or gated by login. So a better comparison would be if the models had the same level of access as an expert.
random_cynic··on Introducing deep research
The difference is that it takes few minutes to an hour at most so it can be run multiple times a day, using the results of previous runs to further refine the search and reasoning process to get better outcomes. Pretty much how any human research works but much faster and with potentially vastly more world-knowledge and reasoning capability than average humans. And these capabilities will rapidly improve with further RL.
random_cynic··on Stack Overflow users deleting answers after OpenAI partnership
No one should copy paste any solutions from anywhere. FWIW, 99% of the content in SO is hardly "original", mostly copy-pasted themselves from previous solutions or original user guide/manuals.
random_cynic··on Stack Overflow users deleting answers after OpenAI partnership
> I wouldn't be so eager to trade the gatekeepers you so fear for even an openly available chat service that is happy to automate away as much information work as possible.

Don't flatter yourself. People want to solve their problems so that they can build what they want to. They don't have time for shenanigans from internet jerks who get their validation from imaginary internet points.

random_cynic··on Stack Overflow users deleting answers after OpenAI partnership
Hardly matters for Stackoverflow like questions if the provided solutions work/solve the problem you're having. Which for me happens majority of the time (with GPT-4 not the free version).
random_cynic··on Stack Overflow users deleting answers after OpenAI partnership
ChatGPT provides far more value than StackOverflow currently. It's not just trained on SO answers but all of the manuals/help pages, Github issues and forum posts. In addition you can continue a conversation. No rigid format or gatekeeping like stackoverflow. I don't see a real use case for Stackoverflow now. If I want to ask humans, Discord/IRC channels are far better option.
random_cynic··on Grok
The 1% who actually work on AI don't use terms as generic as "AI". Way to reveal yourself as college undergrad who read a couple of popular science books, downloaded MNIST data and thinks they are "experts".
random_cynic··on Devin: AI Software Engineer
Lmao what are you talking/coping about? What happened to carriage drivers is pretty well-documented. Maybe ask one of these AI chatbots, they will summarize it for you.
random_cynic··on Devin: AI Software Engineer
Yes, the horse carriage drivers had similar lines of thoughts when they saw first gen automobiles.
random_cynic··on Sora: Creating video from text
That's a false metric. With exponential progress, we have to adjust equally rapidly. It's quite obvious that photos and videos would last far shorter than written medium as proof of something.
random_cynic··on Sora: Creating video from text
You're completely missing the point. Who cares what VFX artists and studios want if anyone with a small team can create high quality entertaining videos that millions of people would pay to watch? And if you think that's a bar too high for AI, then you haven't actually seen the quality of average videos and films generated these days.
random_cynic··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
This could just be a damage control attempt. Irrespective of whether the original report is true, the extra attention at the current stage is not very desirable.
random_cynic··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
If you read my comment again, I'm talking about their competence, not their rights. Those are two entirely different things.
random_cynic··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
No that hasn't at all been the case. The board acted like the most incompetent group of individuals who've even handed any responsibility. If they went through due process, notified their employees and investors, and put out a statement of why they're firing the CEO instead of doing it over a 15 min Google meet and then going completely silent, none of this outrage would have taken place.
random_cynic··on OpenAI staff threaten to quit unless board resigns
If he has great sway with Microsoft and OpenAI employees how has he failed as a leader? Hackernews commenters are becoming more and more reddit everyday.
random_cynic··on Sam Altman and Greg Brockman Joint Statement
No that's horseshit since it does not constitute a valid legal reason for his removal nor it's inline with their blog post. They would get sued out of their a* if they acted based on this.
random_cynic··on I think I need to go lie down
ITT: people in denial while the writing on the wall is literally shoved into their face.
random_cynic··on New models and developer products
Lmao there are always these sort edgy keyboard warriors. If all of that was possible somebody else would have built it and we would not have the AI race today nor would NVIDIA shares skyrocket.
random_cynic··on Stack Overflow is laying off another 28%
> I'm one of the highest ranked people on SO.

Here's a prototype of an average tone-deaf user of SO who think their imaginary internet points actually count. The point being raised here is the difficulty new users (with no imaginary internet points, but with dignity and self-respect) face while submitting a questions/answers to SO. Not people like you who've normalized the bullying for "getting info". Guess what, now with ChatGPT you can get answers that are on average of much better quality than average new SO answers without tolerating pricks.

random_cynic··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
That's the only sane option. The other options suggested in previous comments are not really options but rather trying to use a band-aid to hold together a dam that has already been breached.
random_cynic··on A boy saw 17 doctors over 3 years for pain. ChatGPT found the right diagnosis
No that's absolutely not the same as python rewritten as Go. Not just that most ordinary people don't have access to arcane medical knowledge which are hidden behind paywalls or just not available to public, arriving at a diagnosis that 17 doctors missed before from just MRI notes is not a trivial thing that can be done by just "independent research". It's absolutely disingenuous to suggest otherwise.
random_cynic··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
> there is no engineering solution for this and you're not going to be able to successfully sue companies for scraping Twitter

There absolutely is, if you try instead of whining on internet. People at Vercel have already developed new anti-bot + fingerprinting + rate limiting techniques which look quite promising. I dare say within a year, new tools will be powerful enough to do this easily.

random_cynic··on Ask HN: GPT4 Broke Me
You're in denial and delusional. Most people in this thread are.
random_cynic··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
> I don't get the negativity expressed by top comments.

Basically HN is where bored Reddit user comes nowadays as most of the relevant/influential users are still on Twitter (as you said you just need to curate the feeds well). So who really cares what Reddit know-it-alls think?

random_cynic··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
What's the actual stretch is your denial of reality.
random_cynic··on Helion’s fusion power purchase agreement with Microsoft
The "cynicism" is what happens when you have a bunch of armchair critics who've done nothing significant in their life except engage in pointless nitpicking and flame wars on internet, see that their fantasies are being brought to life by more determined and talented people than they can ever be.
random_cynic··on Helion’s fusion power purchase agreement with Microsoft
Sounds like you've no clue what you're talking about.
random_cynic··on Post-GPT Computing
> it hasn't convinced many businesses.

Those businesses would not be around for very long, so who cares?

random_cynic··on March 20 ChatGPT outage: Here’s what happened
Ironically, this sort of insane takes everywhere on the thread is causing more harm towards the image of open-source developers than OpenAI or anyone could ever do with their press release. It's important to mention whatever open-source library caused a bug because that could be happening in many other applications that are using it. That's basically one of the main points of open-source.
