Would you trust some random island state with your multi billion wealth? Seems risky. Also how do you maintain access to all the relevant markets that you need to multiply your wealth?

> A manager is there precisely to optimize for business objects. They are not your paid friend, therapist or life coach.

A office therapist could actually be precisely what is needed to effectively optimize and alight people for business objectives!

Can be used for hosting libgen/sci-hub.

Basically you have a thin proxy on some not so cheap but ‘anonymous’ Bitcoin payed VM, that then (http) links to your vpn endpoint.

You need the dual setup as using the btc vm for storage of terabytes of data as well as for TB of traffic is too expensive for a volunteer run project.

rand846633··on Google Web Environment Integrity Is the New Microsoft Trusted Computing
Somehow I am not convinced that Ad blockers are such big of a problem for Google. Especially when these are not used much on Mobil, and the world is clearly transitioning to Mobil.

Do we know the financial impact ad blockers are thought to have?

I’m guessing ad fraud is a way bigger problem, although some would argue that add fraud is not googles problem, it still hurts Google.

Maybe it’s also a third thing I just can’t think of right now, ad blocks just seem to niche to me. How about just enforcing a stronger monopoly on user tracking?

So much anger. Not worth reading. More or less just a hatful ramble by some author that despises the protagonists and enjoying mis-characterizing them.

Your comparison seems unsuited: Laws against speeded or ddt are both not primary to protect yourself from your action, but rather to protect others from your actions.

rand846633··on Who’s Behind the Botnet-Based Service BHProxies?

rand846633··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
Went from devops/SRE to pentest/code auditing in my 30s.

Best decision ever.

Took about a thousand hours of refreshing my offensive hacking skills. Maybe 2.5 years of intense work. This and two intermediate security jobs until I landed the dream job in the dream team.

There is hope for you. The effort alone is rewarding. If I had not reached anything with my struggle, it still would have been worth it.

rand846633··on Books to read to understand financial crime
From what I understand corruption can take place without deceit, kind of in bright daylight/in the view and in the known of the public if they, the public have not feasible way of preventing the corruption. One could imagine someone buying a law that reduces taxes for their business. Now is this Legal? Depends, Maybe.. or you could bribe a judge to find a judgment that some Moldavian Bank actually belongs to you… this would probably kinda sound illegal, but then again is it illegal if no court will or can convict you? The interested population will know that this happens, yet what should they do, they will for sure feel quite powerless..
rand846633··on Books to read to understand financial crime
Corruption plays a large role. And then of course the laundering of any proceedings of other crimes.
rand846633··on Ask HN: I'm disabled and out of money. Now what?
This might sound snarky I apologize. How do you know that you pain disappeared from reading a book, when it could have been random coincidence?

Or to phrase it the other way: I have had some or the other sort of pain in my life, and these pains did, rather randomly leave. Would I have read a book or done some random ritual at this point in time, I might now misattribute the relief to the random ritual.

rand846633··on Changing jobs during the Great Resignation
Why would you judge someone purely for their individual actions and not for the action of the group they are actively contributing and thereby enabling?

If you are, let’s say the boat mechanic of someone making a business of dumping toxic chemicals in the sea, then you are clearly doing evil.

Similarly, if you are doing “harm reduction” at Facebook, you are still enabling them to exist, thereby enabling them to get away with doing more harm overall.

rand846633··on Tech Companies Face a Fresh Crisis: Hiring
Nothing new in the article for anyone working in tech. A few funny things nevertheless: the recruiter thinks it’s unreasonable if candidates want to know the salaries right away before investing time in the hiring process. Also quite amusing is that the article never once mentions the idea that a job offer could compete by offering generous compensation, they mentions fancy snacks in the on-site office as a way to convince candidates to join a company, so it’s really no surprise that they can’t hire. Later they mention salaries going up by 10percent in some regions and think this is much, all while not realizing that consumer prices increase as well as inflation will eat those 10%.
