ramshanker··on Ask HN: What challenges are you facing offshoring development to India?
A bit tangential.

Offshoring to India is being done in engineering fields as well. Many international Refinery / Petrochemical/ Offshore platform engineering companies have huge design office here.

ramshanker··on MTIA v1: Meta’s first-generation AI inference accelerator
>>>> fabricated in TSMC 7nm process and runs at 800 MHz, providing 102.4 TOPS at INT8 precision and 51.2 TFLOPS at FP16 precision. It has a thermal design power (TDP) of 25 W.

So 2 generation of immediate improvement available.

ramshanker··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
Wait till some one pulls a Cerberus for MEMORY. And than we connect a wafer scale processor with wafer scale memory and BOOM. New Mega size works emerge.

As for current claim, it might have to do with the amount of time spent taming the wildness of answer by raw GPT-4. So focus is shifting from increasing the model size.

ramshanker··on Cerebras-GPT: Open Compute-Optimal Language Models Trained on Cerebras Cluster
If they can release ChatGPT level competitive open source models, this will be there biggest proof-of-concept backed marketing. After all, their business is selling hardware to a variety of business and institutions.
ramshanker··on Tiny, cheap smart speakers unlocked the rise of digital payments in India
Ditto. I close few credit cards because of usage drop. Paying with UPI is easier and at least 10x accepted.

Moreover, within a year or so, UPI will start accepting Credit card linking as well. Things are really moving FAST here.

>>> is a common occurrence to find people with multiple Aadhar or Voter cards.<<<

Voter cards yes, but AADHAR : No. I haven’t heard anyone still able to have two Aadhar number which are based on biometrics (Fingerprint + Iris Scan).

As for the accuracy of survey data, at least in new village, I know it to be nearly correct. Not grocery incorrect.

ramshanker··on “In roughly two hours, 1647 devices are about to be wiped”
Ohhh the classic enterprise PROCEDURES ;)

I concluded one of the last year deals in 8 months total from the first Mail I sent. Fortunately, 1 day before deadline (31st Dec) there were 4 different departments heads (each at least 2 level above my rank but still below C-level) involved with extended working hours on 30th December…… Ha ha.

So when the next renewal comes up, I am gonna kick-start the procedure 12 months in advance. :D

For my mental peace.

2. Keep O and M equal length.

ramshanker··on Chrome: Sunsetting support for Windows 7 / 8.1 in early 2023
There goes my daily work driver. Surprisingly, it still works awesome with all lots of civil engineering softwares. 16GB DDR3 with an i7 4th Gen. There is no reason to discard it yet. Historically as soon as Microsoft dropped Win7, many of these software followed suit. This is the reason we had to abandon God number of PCs. This time out will be my PC as well than.

ramshanker··on Make Your Own Chips for Free
So how many transistors ( or GATES? ) that 10mm^2 is at 130nm?
ramshanker··on Ask HN: Is there hope for micropayments?
Meanwhile in India, offline micro payment has become more convenient than Cash. Look for UPI. Unified Payment Interface. I regularly make payment of INR 10 ( USD 0.13) for a cup of Tea at a roadside stall.
ramshanker··on Brain FLOPS
What intrigues me is that once we achieve HUMAN level intelligent AI, that wouldn't be end of evolution/growth, imaging 5 yeas after human-level achievement. Machine AI wouldn't be bound by Theory-Of-Evolution-By-Natural-Selection-In-A-Million-Year. So the logical conclusion is, Humans would be inferior intelligence after that point !!! Just imagine.
ramshanker··on Chart: Lithium prices are through the roof this year
I am hoping for Sodium based batteries breakthrough more than increased lithium mining. All those static grid storage don’t need weight advantages of lithium. Neither home storage.
ramshanker··on India reveals RISC-V CPU roadmap, expects product by 2023
Once a working computer is available commercially, A mandate would be issued by the central government ministries to 250+ Public Sector Undertaking ( Companies with >50% govt equity) to procure only these RISCV computers. This way we can definitely bring it up to speed real fast.

PS: From my experience working currently for one of those PSUs .
