rainingcatndogs··on Why I’m Losing Hope in India
> Infact, most of the high ranking people in his cabinet are self-made men like him.

We hear a lot about how the current government is less corrupt and less dynastic. But their actions say otherwise[1][2][3].

But unfortuanately(as a side effect?) policies like this hinders the operations of goodwill nonprofits like Amnesty International[1].

Yes, that seems like a feature.
rainingcatndogs··on A 4-month online dating experiment using 10 fictional singletons (2012)

rainingcatndogs··on We Rewrote Everything in Rust, and Our Startup Still Failed
A "tech stack spoofer", that would be cool and it can have applications beyond that like for security by obscurity.
rainingcatndogs··on WhiteHat Jr’s founder files $2.6M defamation suit against critic
When was the channel unblocked? It is disheartening to know that a company was able to silence legitimate criticism on all major platforms and even on places like LBRY.
rainingcatndogs··on WhiteHat Jr’s founder files $2.6M defamation suit against critic
Their videos got removed from LBRY as well: https://old.reddit.com/r/india/comments/jsuows/all_my_videos... I had no surprise when I heard youtube suspended him. But I'm very dissapointed that a platform like LBRY, marketing itself as a censorship-resistant youtube alternative(https://lbry.com/faq/censorship-resistance) deleted a whole bunch of videos which were clearly fair use and for public good.
rainingcatndogs··on Sourcehut's Second Year in Alpha
I haven't used them but I think the most important benefit is collaboration (sending pull requests etc...) is done via email and thus is less centralised platfomr than github/gitlab which uses their own mechanisms.

rainingcatndogs··on Using Matrix to replace proprietary and centralized chat apps
I recently watched the social dilemma from netflix, they touched the serious matters and presented well but what disappointed me was the lack of awareness about these alternatives. It would have been of great help if they provided references to projects like matrix and fediverse.
rainingcatndogs··on Google sued: Idle Android eats mobile data to send telemetry and preload ads
I wouldn't be surprised if these mentioned apps comes with google's dns resolvers baked in, in that case routing through pihole doesn't help here.

And unfortunately, cloudflare is everywhere. This trend will make it even harder for projects like a new search engine to enter the game.

I belive you can blacklist that driver if needed.
rainingcatndogs··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
> They don't know why they've been banned.

The absence of reason makes me wonder a lot of possibilities. Maybe google bans people who use ad-blockers, maybe they didn't explicitly set that way but some of their algorithms must have figured out these users should go. I know, it is extremely unlikely but we're free to come up with reasons if google doesn't give one. Don't sit there thinking it won't happen to you(I was like that up until recently), get a domain name and transfer all important accounts to it. And do a Google takeout.

rainingcatndogs··on New youtube-dl release: v2020.11.01.1
And it made me download a lot of MIT OCW courses which I watched and might watch from youtube. In case there will be a situation when we cannot download videos anymore from youtube, I'm gonna host a Peertube instance and upload all of these awesome materials. NewPipe which I currently use to view youtube has good support for peertube as well, so I won't miss much except maybe the comments.
rainingcatndogs··on Ask HN: Microsoft blocked my outlook.com account for using a VPN. Any ideas?
Definitely easier to get back a gone domain(unless I missed payment) than a gone gmail/other free account.
rainingcatndogs··on Ask HN: Microsoft blocked my outlook.com account for using a VPN. Any ideas?
I did have my phone number linked to gmail and I was able to reset my password using otp code, not 2FA though. As you say, it might not happen if I enable 2FA but I've had enough that day frantically trying to get my ~10 year old account tied to many things back. But still, I would like to keep my account and will follow your advice but won't be counting on it to last forever anymore.
rainingcatndogs··on Ask HN: Microsoft blocked my outlook.com account for using a VPN. Any ideas?
Last week google did something like that to me. It said "device not recognized" and "suspected activity detected" and won't let me in even after I reset my password. That was my reality check. Fortuanately, I was able to login via my old smartphone. I did a google takeout and downloaded all my data. Then I got a domain name and protonmail account and changed email on all of my accounts to my own domain. Now I have some peace of mind that nothing would be lost even if my gmail account is to be gone tomorrow.
rainingcatndogs··on Apple refuses to engrave ‘liberate’ protest slogan on HK customer’s Apple Pencil
They probably have a list of phrases that will be sent for manual review.
rainingcatndogs··on Don't contribute anything relevant in web forums
It is definely true for platforms like Quora which aggressively guards user contributed data and even blocks the internet archive's crawler. But stackoverflow and such have content under creative commons and it is actually good that anyone can easily contribute. Now, I do dread the day when reddit becomes like quora, it won't be surprising since what they did with their website to boost app installs.
