rahilb··on Erlang's not about lightweight processes and message passing
As far as I can tell the article contains only erlang snippets directly quoted from the paper reviewed.
rahilb··on Ask HN: Is Recursion Worth It?
To iterate is human; to recurse, divine.
rahilb··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
I did this 2 years ago, it probably changed my life. I still don’t consider myself a runner but can now run a 5k in about 30 minutes on any given day. If you’re considering it go for it!
rahilb··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
It can both true that those shoplifters getting caught are punished to the full extent of the law and that it is hard to catch 50/50 people who were in a shop for 30 seconds and arrest them for shoplifting. So hard in fact that if the police are not physically there before it is happening there is likely zero chance to catch anyone in these groups.

The crime is perfect.

rahilb··on The balance has shifted away from SPAs
The grand parent comment is likely referring to ‘deep web’ apps that you or I will never see, which probably replace a series of excel spreadsheets and email conversations.
rahilb··on About the security content of iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1
>The manufacturer has no say on the usage, simple as that.

Where does this end? Should all devices that have computers attached be capable of being 'rooted'?

You would not have the expectation if for example you purchased an MRI machine, that it should be able to emulate a Game Boy. A phone is also a special purpose computer; and the phone's software is designed to guarantee that those special purposes always work.

In my opinion this is the main thing that this root crowd does not understand; the iPhone is not a general purpose computing device. You should not have bought one if that's what you wanted. The market is full of general purpose computers that can make phone calls.

rahilb··on How the government set up a fake bank to launder drug money (2012)
It was a top secret plan spanning multiple countries likely run by corrupt officials, I think it probably cost more than 90 million!
rahilb··on Ask HN: I bought Voltaren at the chemist, now Google shows me ads for it. Why?
It’s probably a coincidence or just the worst advertisers on the planet. Why would I show an ad to someone who literally just bought my thing?
rahilb··on Philip Glass: My problem is people don’t believe I write symphonies (2017)
Is your point that the music is bad because it can function as background music and doesn’t require active listening to enjoy? Or that the music is good but the listeners are bad as they play it in the background?

Would your opinion of his music be any different if you were alive when it came out? He is so influential that when you listen all you hear is a tired old style, which would never exist without him.

rahilb··on Apple Agrees to Pay $113M to Settle 'Batterygate' Case over iPhone Slowdowns
In my experience it's better to go to an 'Authorized Service Provider' for repair.

They have an incentive to do repairs and get paid, and it's quite easy for them to get Apple to pay the repair cost.

E.g. on my machine that had the Keyboard repeating issue I also received a topcase as there was some slight de-lamination. Seems your model was affected (at least nominally) by the same keyboard issue so just send it in for a repair of the keyboard and also note the other issues; they will likely be repaired for free.

rahilb··on Does Facebook pay Apple 30% of revenue derived from ads made within its iOS app?
I can deposit into my pokerstars account, to upgrade my app experience to play with real money; I’m assuming Apple are not taking a cut as this would make the iOS app unprofitable for pokerstars.

Interestingly they also allow you to deposit with Apple Pay (along with many other payment processors, which the user can choose).

rahilb··on A Surprise AWS Bill
That’s 5x, actually less because of the deposit amount.
rahilb··on The Rise and Rise of JSON (2017)
JSON was clearly built with XGH axioms in mind: ‘errors only appear when you notice them’.
rahilb··on 20-Year-Old Robinhood Customer Dies by Suicide After a $730k Negative Balance
Sophisticated investors can use options to construct payout graphs that are not linear, e.g. you can form an M shaped payout with knock out puts & calls. They’re actually used to manage risk, not gamble. Most option activity is large investors limiting exposure, or big banks creating or hedging structured products (which are generally not available to non institutional investors).
rahilb··on Kafka Removing Zookeeper Dependency
It’s the default because Java has a history, and it was set when everyone was deploying war files to machines with 512mb total memory and the default worked for 95% of people for the past 25 years. In fact, it’s still good enough for the chocolate factory that has brainwashed you into drinking the static binary milkshake.

Of course there are ways to use all the available ram when you deploy your kubernetes pods, you just have to consult the documentation.

Honestly this criticism is ridiculous I can’t believe I even bothered to reply.

rahilb··on Turns out claims Airbnb was taking houses out of the rental market were right
Before AirBnB, you just had BnBs. In England at least they were often farmhouses, and the owner literally makes you breakfast if you were staying in their main house (this was a large part of it). I’m not sure what if any regulation applies if you are a BnB like that. In fact, it’s such a part of British culture, there is a game show where 5 BnB owners stay at each other’s places and see who is ranked best. The show airs every week. AirBNB are parasites.
rahilb··on You’re better off using Exceptions
Reminds me of this classic

enum Bool { True, False, FileNotFound };

rahilb··on All Sonos products will continue to work past May
I have a connect amp: how would one go about trying to root it?

I have no experience with reverse engineering or hardware really, are there any good resources for stuff like this?

rahilb··on Working for someone vs. doing your own thing
I think you are missing the point of the system: you pay the difference in general income tax now so when you are unable to pay such levels the state (and those still paying income tax) take care of you. If you are always able to pay for private health insurance or are always being taxed highly on income you are very lucky and should have no problem kicking in for public health.

There is no minimum tax payable before accessing healthcare services: if you have no income, or are unlucky, you won’t die or be debt ridden for the rest of your life.

rahilb··on Switzerland vs Silicon Valley for Software Developers
I have seen some day rate contracts in Zurich at astronomical rates, if you don't mind working for a Big Bank. One of them even offered expensed flights, hotel accommodation and a (substantial) per diem!

J2EE isn't the bleeding edge but it can keep the lights on.

rahilb··on UK Government Selects OpenAPI v3
you can also look at Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State (HATEOAS)
rahilb··on Web Development Simplified with Svelte
My personal view is that the 'what' in frontend development generally isn't super interesting and most web frontends are very similar; if you do not focus on new tooling, you will just do the same thing over and over which is unsatisfying.

If you're a very smart dev at one of the biggest tech companies in the world, getting paid a quarter of a million dollars per year working on a niche team that handles a small section of a single product, you will probably get bored pretty quickly and start focusing on the how. It's a shame really; some of the greatest minds of our generation are being put into rooms to work on animations for buttons on virtual DVD cases and Photo Books.

The silver lining is all these tools are given away for free. The tools so great and their corporate creators so cool that you can just have them! A cynical reading is that they are only given away because the competition can derive no value from them... In fact, forcing your competitors to retrain every 6 months when you release another major version that breaks all existing projects will only slow them down and fill your coffers! The new whatsapp will never get off the ground, because the devs were too busy rewriting babel files and the money ran out... you just saved a cool $18bn.

If these frameworks were really the key to anyone's successful business you would not know that they exist.

rahilb··on Ask HN: Getting Started Investing
If I understand bitcoin correctly (I probably don't); Mining a block is finding some numbers (maybe they all have to be prime?) whose product is a large number ending in a specified number of zeros. Hence the zero sum game comment :)
rahilb··on Why Monzo's bank transfers weren't working on the 30th of May
I'm pretty sure they're a Java shop, and they're referring to sun.misc.unsafe and the goodies inside that let you manually allocate memory.
rahilb··on A 'Blockchain Bandit' Is Guessing Private Keys and Scoring Millions
So this was a heist performed on a number guessing game by guessing numbers? Poetry in motion.
rahilb··on Java 12
Interesting that they explicitly exclude time to safe point from that improvement. In my experience that is usually most expensive part of a stw pause.

rahilb··on Demand for Ruby on Rails is Still Huge
I suspect companies using Rails are quietly making money and do not feel the need to migrate to the latest and greatest. Money making code does not get changed in my experience.
rahilb··on Elon Musk emails employees about 'extensive and damaging sabotage' by employee
Doesn't it make sense for Elon himself to be holding a sizeable short position? Presumably he'd like to hedge his large Tesla holding?
rahilb··on Low Level Bit Hacks You Absolutely Must Know
That's cool. I probably shouldn't have said useful and instead said interesting. My interest in these kind of operations is to learn lower level theory, not to produce production grade bit counting/twiddling code. In that sense, the operation is interesting (to me).
