ragerino··on Request for Technically Risky Projects
I am sure you know about Solid.

Just in case: https://solidproject.org/

ragerino··on Ways to make a web component
When I was a young web-developer, I joined the WHATWG group. And one of my few contributions was asking for custom HTML elements.

I actually developed a framework myself in LotusScript ;)

ragerino··on Ways to make a web component
Problem here is CSS, JavaScript, and HTML. You might use variables, functions or attributes, styles, tags, that would interfere with other components.

That's why you want an additional layer like Angular2+ taking care of that.

ragerino··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Just saw this https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/jgxd3d/twitter-insider-ac...

Means they had someone inside Twitter.

ragerino··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
It seems like the devs at Twitter are clueless, how this happened.

The hackers could be deep in Twitters systems, eventually even have even someone working at Twitter, or it's a result of a new yet unknown password list or phishing attempt.

ragerino··on The global fertility rate is falling
That's a good thing, because fertile soil depletion is going to be a huge problem.

ragerino··on PGX: Write Postgres extensions in Rust instead of C
I think the comment was less about your code but rather about your v0.0.3 version number. I guess a v0.99 would imply more stability.

That's why lots of companies have switched to date based versioning, similar to Ubuntu and others.

ragerino··on Hacking with environment variables
You can define any executable in the $BROWSER environment variable which will be executed whenever antigravity is imported.

You could execute a 'curl` which directly pipes into 'bash -c'.

ragerino··on Try Linux
I hooe my update from 18.04 LTS ro 20.04 LTS will be the opposite of eventful.
ragerino··on It is now 100 seconds to midnight
Watching the press conference now. To be honest I am not surprised, that the clock was moved closer to midnight.

In my opinion the major issue is, that most people don't understand what is happening.

ragerino··on I Was Tortured for Days at Guantanamo Bay
The word "painless" is just for the paper trail so people can start pointing at each other instead of taking responsibility. Means it will be covered up while people are still being held captive without a fair trial.

This needs to go to the International Court Of Justice in Den Haag, regardless if the court is being recognized by the US.

ragerino··on Microsoft to force Chrome default search to Bing via Office365 ProPlus installer
It's old Microsoft all over again!
ragerino··on Show HN: Nebula – a distributed graph database written in C++
Apache Drill is nice for querying structured files like CSV.

https://drill.apache.org/

ragerino··on Show HN: Nebula – a distributed graph database written in C++
I gave the tutorial using docker a try. The SQL like query language is OK until it gets to doing queries with where clauses on the data. Some form of help and auto completion would be great.

I recommend to align with the GQL standard: https://www.gqlstandards.org/

And Apache Tinkerpop. E.g. a RDF Sail implementation for Nebula. http://tinkerpop.apache.org/

ragerino··on Rust DataBase Connectivity (RDBC)
I think the initiative is great. I did lots of Java database development. Starting with JDBC, circumventing J2EE with Spring and Hibernate, and ending up doing JPA with Spring. I haven't seen anything similar in Rust.

Therefore I recommend looking at JPA for object relational mapping, and Spring Frameworks JdbcTemplate for things like basic CRUD support and JPA abstraction.

ragerino··on Which Machines Do Computer Architects Admire? (2013)
I admire AMDs Zen architecture.
ragerino··on New Material Breaks World Record Turning Heat into Electricity
Actually looking into independent power sources for small IoT sensor stations for a hobby project. I think to understand climate change better, we need more data.

Engineer here btw.

ragerino··on New Material Breaks World Record Turning Heat into Electricity
That's a cool idea.

I came across this link because I want to build cheap small sensor stations using LoRa to transmit data (gps location?, temp, humidity, air quality) to a central server.

Solar is not really an option because it needs to be cleaned once in a while.

ragerino··on Myths about Minimum Viable Product
For me a MVP has only to do with project management and agile methods.

The moment a MVP leaves this area, it's a product. If people present it as MVP, they are doing a poor job or don't know what they are doing.

ragerino··on Show HN: Gameslab, a FPGA powered handheld game console
Thanks a lot! I love that you are using Rust.
ragerino··on Show HN: Gameslab, a FPGA powered handheld game console
Congrats on getting it done.

Just mastering Ki-CAD is an accomplishment. I learned circuit design with P-CAD. And it was anything else but intuitive. Playing around with Ki-CAD reminded my of thise days.

Can you recommend a good Ki-CAD tutorial?

Can you elaborate a little bit on the mistakes you made and what led to the choices you made? E.g. first time read about Das U-Boot.

ragerino··on Show HN: Local Node.js app to save everything you browse and serve it offline
If original author agrees, I can dockerize it.
ragerino··on Boeing push to make training profitable may have left 737 Max pilots unprepared
I think what they meant was making training less costly for their customers. It's a lost opportunity, when pilots train instead of sitting behind the wheel/stick flying goods or customers around the world.
ragerino··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
In regards of profitable, I hope you also consider internal cloud computing usage as it were used by an external party.

E.g. if stuff like AlphaGo, Youtube, or the Search Engine used tons of cloud computing resources you should not count it as no profit made (actually loss because of power consumption, server housing, networking, ...), regardless if those cloud resources were anyways unused. Then it's up to your colleagues then to make the profit.

ragerino··on File systems unfit as distributed storage back ends: 10 years of Ceph
MapR-FS is a great distributed file system, which solves tons of challenges out of the box. E.g. HA, POSIX, NFS, multi tenancy, multi-temprature, co-location, and sexurity.
ragerino··on A New Search Engine
We need a smarter search.

One that is based on analyzing the content of a page then on it's page rank.

Self speaking that it has to be open source.

Apache SOLR would be a good starting point.

ragerino··on Is Plagiarism Wrong?
I agree fully. I left academia because of exactly this reason.

While academics have high morale on not stealing more than four words in the same sequence, they don't have any issue putting their names first on some engineers idea.

ragerino··on Diagram.codes
I recommend taking a look at https://sequencediagram.org/

I've been using it in various projects, since it only requires a small text file and only a web browser to view those diagrams.

Would be awesome if this diagrams could make it into Markdown.

ragerino··on Is AMD Returning to Open-Source BIOS/Coreboot Support?
Found this article while looking if Libreboot is supporting AMD Ryzen for my DIY homelab / NAS box. Found an outdated HN article too and thought this might interest someone on HN.
ragerino··on A developer goes to a DevOps conference
As a lazy developer I enjoy DevOps principles. First time I don't have infrastructure issues. My code builds and deploys automagically and sys-admins can focus on important stuff.

I'd also like to describe it as just another tool in my toolbox. Created by admins for developers. I don't mind YAML at all. It's better than JSON or XML and it's a first class citizen in Go, Python, JS and other languages.
