radioactive21··on Ask HN: What advice messed up your life?
Knock on wood, nothing that has ruined my life, but little things that I have caused me opportunities.

-"Should I tell a recruiter or HR person about my current salary?"

Friend of mine said always tell, reveal everything and be truthful. The reality, I got fucking low balled on salary, pretty much they would not go above $5K of what I currently made. It wasn't till I spoke to someone else that told me NEVER tell your salary, either say you rather not say or give a large range. So far giving a range has worked out for me every time. I give a large range and they tend to lean towards the high end.

- Never talk about sex, politics and religion on a date.

I found out it is the BEST way to quickly find out if you are compatible or not with someone. I am referring to if you're dating for a serious long term or possibly marriage relationship. Of course the way you talk about it does matter.

I have done this to everyone of my dates and I can tell right away if it's wort the effort or not. Usually it's the politics that is the deal breaker.

radioactive21··on The Mother of All Demos
I dont know why but watching early tech always gets me excited. Just interesting to see how everything started.
radioactive21··on Siblings Share Genes, But Rarely Personalities
My sister and I are completely opposites. I am an introvert, she is a crazy extrovert. She is a crazy risk taker, while I am risk adverse.
radioactive21··on Will high reputation in Stack Overflow help to get a good job?
It would be sad to see someone get a job solely on his/her Stack Overflow reputation, but I wouldn't object to it helping you get an edge over other candidates.

If I was an employer looking at a candidate, obviously I am more concern about the quality of each answer than the quantity of each answer.

radioactive21··on Google Execs Seem Out of Touch With Social Networking Culture
A bit perplex by these two statemnets.

"But it’s an awkward time at Google, where a group of employees can leave, create a start-up and come back two years later through an acquisition with $50 million in their pockets."

So employees leave, create their own startup and Google happens to buy those startups. Here it sounds like a bad thing.

Yet.... a few sentences down she says , "Google needs to find a way to foster its employees’ entrepreneurial desires and talents"

Wouldn't this mean more employees would leave? If I have entrepreneurial desires, I'd quit my job and tried to pursue my own startup.

On a different note, I feel that Facebook is a trend supported by hype that can be brought down by any other hip social network site down the line. Just like Xanga, and MySpace before it. A good example is Digg, once thought to be a behemoth it died almost over night.

radioactive21··on Please, screw up (on European corporate culture)
I believe you are blending two different things together. Working together as a team, and making a decision.

I agree that it's good team building to work together in a large group, but do you have to carry around 16 managers for every decision? Why is one person so afraid of standing up and saying I made the decision because I feel it benefits the company, and then go into your data and facts. Then have anyone who objects come forwarded. Instead of having to cross reference every member or other departments for trivial decisions.

radioactive21··on On Refusing to Disclose Your Salary in a Job Interview
I asked someone for advice on whether or not I should tell my salary if asked during a interview or by a recruiter over the phone. My friend said, tell them. Big mistake.

It was early on my career so I was making 40K. I applied for a job that I could do with my eyes closed. I aced the interview with flying colors. Then I got a call a day after the interview from HR and the first question was "May I ask what your current salary is?" I told them. Now before I say anything someone from within the company recommended me. He told me that the average for that position and title for the company is 55-65K.

The HR person low balled me at 45K. We talked and the highest she was willing to go was 48K, she would NOT budge above that. I did the standard, let me think about it and I'll get back to you. Called her back a few days later, with my case and she still would not budge, so I turned it down.

Don't mistaken, until they give you the offer and you are filling out HR forms, do not tell them your salary, that doesn't mean lie just tell them you dont want to reveal it. One of the things I have done is give them a range if they are really pushy, usually a huge range just to make a point that I dont want to reveal it.

radioactive21··on How Baidu Won China
Many Asian countries do this and they back companies that are home grown. For example Samsung basically is run by the South Korean government. In China, it is no different, look at all the big companies that were built and raised in China, and they are backed by the government.
radioactive21··on Breakfast is Overrated
For me this is true. Again, can't speak for everyone, but for myself I eat when I am hungry, but never over eat. I dont eat breakfast unless im hungry, and I eat in moderation.

Not trying to yank anyone's chain, but I know people who make a huge deal out of breakfast. They make a huge meal out of it, from which they also add a large lunch and diner, and then question why they cant lose weight.

radioactive21··on "Get fired, it’s a great learning experience"
To me getting fired still has a very negative feel to it.It means you reach a breaking point, and you absolutely refuse to continue or you broke some rule, it could be on principle or violation, but nevertheless you did something wrong. Which case all you will learn is that you can stand your ground.

Now if it's a layoff, that's a different story. I've always been told that you should work your way out of your job. Meaning do such a stellar job that they really dont need you anymore. In this sense, it's a good thing, because you actually know when it's time to move on or that what you're doing is not up to your full potential.

But there is another set of people that constantly strife to improve and move up in their own skill set and role. These people move as opportunity comes to them. They are never laid off or fired, per se, but know how to actively advance their career and goals effectively. In my mind this is where everyone should be, as it means you are never fearful of losing your job, or ever concern about finding another job. If you are good, the jobs will find you.

radioactive21··on Developing When Your Computer is too Fast
Wouldn't all this depend on your target customers? If your target customer is big business that have fast computers you are okay.

If your customers are average joes, then yes I would say you should have a test environment in place that closely represents those customers.

Even after all that the question I have is which set of customers brings in the most money for you? Lets say you have a mix of big business that run fast machines, and average joes that run slow machines. If 90% of your money comes from big business, why bother trying to make software for the slow machines? Just slap on a system requirement and it should cover them, so-to-speak.

radioactive21··on Gmail Creator Paul Buchheit Leaves Facebook for Y Combinator
Wow, very interesting, now there is a whole different angle to FB's Titan killing gmail system.

Why would Paul leave just before launch? To me it means Paul either was never involved even though he was told he would be, or it's crap and he's leaving before the shit hits the fan.

radioactive21··on The 3 Programming Languages you need to Know
I agree. I dont think in a particular language, I think in programming terms. What is the best I can use to perform what I need.
radioactive21··on Do the Right Thing: A lesson by Netflix
All I ask from a company is replace or refund for a product that is bad. Make the process quick and easy.

I recently had my Kindle's USB cable start cracking and literally crumbling apart. The plastic casing for the cable was very cheap, you bend it and it just cracks.

Called up Amazon and they immediately had me log in, added replacement to my cart, with free 1 day shipping. It took about 5 minutes. Guy was very polite.

Stuff like that, is what gets customers talking positively about your company.

radioactive21··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me hard
It's Steve Jobs. He once went to a town hall meeting, just to tell them Apple has been in the city for so and so years, and how he's expanding the HQ and how things were going. That's all he wanted to say, nothing to complain about, but just reminding them who Apple is.
radioactive21··on "The web is considered 'public domain'"
It's funny sometimes people think the internet is so big, no one will notice, when actually its the other way around.

Not only does the internet do a good job of exposing things, it catalogs everything, so it's hard for you to just remove something without someone or something saving it.

I once had someone wrote some crazy shit on their blog about my friend. My friend approached this person, and she denied it, and apparently tried removing her blog post. Luckily Google cached the entire thing.

radioactive21··on Reddit Founder: “I Wish I Still Owned Reddit Now”
He could have pulled a Kevin Rose and shot himself in the face. There are people who are good at certain things, knowing when to walk away is very important.

There are entrepreneurs that are great at creating startups, but beyond that they are horrible. There are countless stories of founders who dont know how to lead companies pass certain points and refuse to hire anyone else, watching their business fail.

radioactive21··on California Highway Patrol salaries
I know the local chief of police for a UC school, I will try to ask him about "other" pay.

I know that University of California, police get paid very well. But i've been told that you need to be recommended into the selection process and it's also a very small group, about a dozen officers covering 20K-30K campus. Most I know are 10-15 year vets. These salaries have always been public, and they get criticized all the time. The Chief has told me that they have to make a case for having each one of these officers every single year.

On an interesting note, UC police have jurisdiction for the entire state of California.

radioactive21··on How Porn Can Hijack Your Brain
Porn is only a symptom of something bigger. Just like other addictive stimuli, it only reveals something more about a person, and most likely that something else is the root cause.
radioactive21··on "My Story" (of why the FTC came after him for $300k)
Yup, I didnt mean to come off sounding like someone who just throws a label at a person. But no this guy deserves the title scumbag whore. I follow his blog and even tried to email him to ask if these allegations were true, and he never responded. If you google it on the web there are people that have come forward proving they were scam by him.
radioactive21··on "My Story" (of why the FTC came after him for $300k)
I've read into this story before and this guy is a scumbag. The really sad part in all of this is that he's pulling another scam by trying to make it seem like he's the victim and the FTC is destroying small businesses.
radioactive21··on Why Aren't There More Terrorist Attacks?
The part where he mentions Muslims in America do not support it is a good point to note. I have Muslim friends, and they have told me that even amongst the hardcore Muslims in the US, there are lots of talk about disagreement of US policy but no one ever talks or jokes about terrorist attacks. Even in private or just friendly talks.

On a side note another thing that I did find interesting that my friend told me was that the FBI visits Mosques frequently. Just to have friendly talk or to keep in touch. US intelligence works with local Muslim activist and Mosques more than people think.

radioactive21··on Academia is not Broken. We are.
Here is what I dont get. In the US we complain about higher education Academia yet millions of foreigners go to our schools. I saw a stat where the majority of Engineer graduates are foreigners in the US.

They are using the very system that we complain about to benefit them and their country.

radioactive21··on Microsoft apology for code theft may not do, Plurk says
Stop making this such a big deal, its like every little thing on the internet has to be bracken down into some philosophical principal that was violated.

This is the best thing that could have happen to Plurk. Microsoft could just buy the whole darn thing, which they probably would have anyways.

Bad rep for Microsoft???? I already thought Microsoft's rep was in the dumps seeing as how every internet site trashes them.

Principal? Like this thing doesnt happen all the time, or like how big companies havent already bought up every little company that stood in it's way? At lease Plurk can get more money with all the PR, if they ever sell.

radioactive21··on Google UK town that only exists online
my imaginary friend came from Argleton. He says it's a great little town, he also mention it was hard to spot it.
radioactive21··on Epidemic of Fear: How Panicked Parents Skipping Shots Endangers Us All
I see your point, but I am reminded of multiple research where if you make it an option people are less likely to follow through. (sorry too lazy to find and link source)

I think it applies here, but there was a study in which they made something default. Like by default they enrolled you into some fitness program, but you have the option of not doing it. The study found that more people actually went through with the program instead of trying to opt out. Compare to when the program was optional and people had to sign up to do the fitness program.

By stating that vaccinations are mandatory, his intentions might simply be trying to get as much people as possible to take the preventive care. Again, I am just trying to state one possible reason.

What if he was not attached to any company or any entity, but just merely a doctor who advocated the vaccination as mandatory? Would things be different?

radioactive21··on World's top 100 universities listed
"Top 100 universities at doing what?"

The list is endless, visit their websites, look up all the teachers and programs they have going. Now research those and you will see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Top university implies that these schools have a large hub of academic progress, it might not be in a tangible form but the stuff they do at those universities does make a difference.

These schools get a lot of bad press because the big players of the world seem to come from them, but it does not diminish the contribution these higher education universities have added to the global community.

radioactive21··on Inventing Demand
Doctors do this all the time, there is even a term for it called "supplier induced demand." In a normal setting you'll see that as the number of suppliers for a particular good or services in creases, demand should decrease as there are too many in the industry.

What doctors have done is they induce demand by changing the way they offer their services. For example spending more time with customers or offering better service. This is why in such areas as Beverley Hills where there are hundreds of plastic surgeons they still all charge you a premium price. They all offer the same service, but because they can induce demand by their name and skill and location they make more, all of them.

Also this is one of many factors why the health care in America cost so much. Doctors can pretty much make up their own pricing. The more specialist the more you can charge, so everyone suddenly claims they are specialist doctors so they can charge you $1000 for clipping your nails.

radioactive21··on Seth's Blog: The problem with positive thinking
it is thinking positive.
radioactive21··on China Embarrasses US in TopCoder Contest
another point is that in the US the notion of "Hacking" is still seen as negative or criminal.

Something else is that in that age group in the US people are about to graduate or graduating so if they are really good at math/science/engineering they have already either been picked up my companies or in the process of getting hired. Why does this matter? Becuase if you are going to or are working for a company im pretty sure they dont want you to participate in any event about hacking.
