rPlayer6554··on OK, so Anthropic's AI built a C compiler. That don't impress me much
The binary would not be nearly as useful as the source code. And even if the AI read the binary and copied it, the story is still it reverse engineered and re-wrote a c compiler all on its own. Which is still pretty impressive to me and has real world use cases.

Maybe Anthropic could release the logs to show how the AI was accessing the files.

rPlayer6554··on Apple Takes Full Control of 'Severance' in Surprise Deal
I was ok with it opening a new story at the end of season 2 because it’s a fascinating dilemma and I’m happy they wanted to explore a deeper question about the morality of having two souls in one body and how that affects their humanity.

However, it should end next season. This idea it’s going to be a long term project is going to ruin everything and now I am sad.

rPlayer6554··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
Ignoring what I think of the case itself, I hate how many headlines now are just the talking points for one side or the other in a dispute. At least try to pretend you’re being a neutral reporter rather than regurgitating what someone with an agenda says.

Another pro tip is to not pay at restaurants. If you can leave the restaurant fast enough before they give you the bill, they must have forgotten to charge you and sucks for them! The trick is not to bring bags so you can fake a trip to the toilet!

rPlayer6554··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
Ok so walk me through how _only_ focusing on the browser core will make them money other than continuing to be dependent on Google. How can they diversify their revenue streams?

I agree they should make the browser core good, but right now they are entirely dependent on their biggest competitor.

rPlayer6554··on VS Code deactivates IntelliCode in favor of the paid Copilot
Just to be clear, they are NOT deactivating IntelliSense which suggests classes and functions.

This is an AI inline code suggestion tool using local LLMs.

Not great but may or may not impact your workflow. I love using agents, but Intellijs inline code suggestions (also based on a local LLMs) are usually useless to me.

rPlayer6554··on Framework Sponsors CachyOS
Thanks for the clarification. Glad to see your support for the open source community.
rPlayer6554··on Framework Sponsors CachyOS
Very interesting that Valve and Framework seem to be throwing their eggs in the Arch basket over Debian/Ubuntu. When I got my first computer, I installed Ubuntu because it was dominant. Maybe it still is for the average Linux downloader, but why are the Hardware companies more into Arch?
rPlayer6554··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
They have a “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.” Sure it has a lot of crap but they also have major hits like Squid Games, Stranger Things, (both became cultural phenomena) and Daredevil.
rPlayer6554··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
YouTube has a lot of really positive educational content. I have learned so much from it. For instance, I was able to learn photography from it. Yes it’s still social media in a way, but the benefits can really outweigh the drawbacks with proper use.

Shorts as a whole are incredibly addictive and have a much lower benefit to drawback ratio. Parents should be able to make this cost/benefit decision for their kids. I wish I could turn them off for myself. I settled on only using YouTube on my laptop because shorts don’t have the same appeal in that context.

rPlayer6554··on Germany: States Pass Porn Filters for Operating Systems
Network level is more effective in blocking porn, but Kids often join unfiltered WiFi networks. Also I think network management is a bit more complicated for the average person than OS settings. I think both are useful
rPlayer6554··on Germany: States Pass Porn Filters for Operating Systems
You need both in the world. Blockers are almost useless for adults with an addiction who can easily just buy a new device or figure out a way around.

Kids can’t really join addiction recovery groups, at least not in the same way adults can because it takes a full understanding of the impacts of porn addiction on life and a desire to stop. I can only speak for myself but even with parents who tried to communicate this, I didn’t have that level of maturity then.

Blockers at least can stop them from accidentally finding it, or generic curiosity. At least until the parents decide they are mature enough to handle the unfiltered internet

rPlayer6554··on Germany: States Pass Porn Filters for Operating Systems
*This does not seem like a censorship measure.* It seems like it requires OSs to give parents an easy way to filter porn.

I struggle with porn addiction. When I really fall back into it I act out 5-10 times a day. I can’t stop even if I want to. It distracts from work and from my real life relationships and girlfriend.

Everyone on HN loves to rag on social media because it’s so toxic. What about porn? If social media makes it easy to compare my “boring” life with “beautiful” influencer lives, why wouldn’t porn make my normal girlfriend and normal sex seem boring. Part of that is how young I found porn when my brain was still developing and forming how it processed sex and relationships. Porn makes me feel so depressed.

I am sure other people handle porn and social media better than me. And that’s ok, I respect that. *But even if you think porn is ok as an adult, can’t you see why adults should be able to have more control over what their kids see.* Yes if they are motivated kids will find it - I learned a lot of the engineering skills I have now getting around my parents blocker. *Not every kid is that good and this might help many.* If it’s not required to be on in the OS, what’s the harm?

P.S. if you struggle with something similar to me, look up SA, SAA, or SLAA.

rPlayer6554··on Researchers discover security vulnerability in WhatsApp
Swapping my phone number every year in the US would be an annoying as hell. Tons of services use phone number as 2FA or a backup recovery. (Including a lot of banks) I use SMS with some people and that would cut contact with them. Same direction if they changed numbers.
rPlayer6554··on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure
Every major station I went to in Japan had a huge mall with restaurants connected to it owned by the rail company. Inside stations were rail company owned gift shops, convince stores, etc.
rPlayer6554··on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure
Japan’s rail privatization was extremely successful and it’s considered one of the best rail networks in the world now.

Wow that is a clean and responsive interface! It feels great on mobile.
rPlayer6554··on At this SF grocery store, you can't leave unless you buy something
Why do people in SF just put up with this? If it were anywhere else in the country I’d think mayor would be ousted by someone who’d clean up the city.

And I’m not talking about homelessness in general. New York has plenty but at least it’s somewhat under control. No companies are leaving or putting these sorts of barriers in place because of it.

rPlayer6554··on The decline of deviance
I think it’s simple economics. A competitor starts scrappy and has nothing to lose. It will take risks because if it fails because it has nothing to loose and everything to gain. It’s successful and as it grows in success it becomes more risk averse because it has so much more to loose. It looses the scrappiness that made it the dominant force.

This happened to the Roman Empire and it’s what’s happening to our current world order.

rPlayer6554··on How Kyoto, Japan Became the Loveliest Tourist-Trap
I’m going to Japan in a week and I’m doing 1 week Tokyo, 2 days Nakasendo trail, 1 week Kyoto, 2 days Hiroshima. (Plus a day leftover I haven’t decided what to do with)

Do people have tips to find less touristy but still worthwhile places to go. Tourists go for these big places because traveling to Japan costs quite a bit and I’m using limited vacation time. Planning the trip in a location where the language doesn’t even have the same characters and I don’t have many familiar geographical reference points that coordinate with known cultural themes (unlike Europe) is already a bit overwhelming.

rPlayer6554··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
The title on HN conflicts with the truth and the title of the article. It is 100k per application (which gives the visa for 3 years) not 100k per year.
rPlayer6554··on Signal Secure Backups

rPlayer6554··on New high-speed Amtrak trains are moving slower than the old ones
New trains are very sexy, but what’s really needed is the very unsexy difficult track replacement and enforcing passenger train right of way. (Which may involve side pass extensions and/or freight train length restrictions) More people will travel if the times go down. Maybe the new trains will increase comfort which I could see being a draw.
