rPlayer6554··on 'It's not vital to spend five days a week in the office'
I can see why WFH is attractive for established professionals who have families. But for Juniors who don't have families it can be depressing to stay all day at home alone. It can't be good to miss out on informal conversations with senior developers where you can learn a lot. It's also much easier to build connections in person. If you don't work in close proximity it's harder to connect with people you don't directly work with, even if they are technically on your team.

I think hybrid model is the best option personally.

The more people that use this, the less that ads will be worth.

rPlayer6554··on Us revokes Intel, Qualcomm licenses to sell chips to Huawei

rPlayer6554··on Total eclipse of the Internet: traffic impacts in Mexico, the US, and Canada

Oh yea and that.

rPlayer6554··on Most people with addiction simply grow out of it (2014)
No addiction as I understand it is _even if they want to_ they cannot. Not all addicts want to quit.
rPlayer6554··on Reddit beats film industry again, won't have to reveal pirates' IP addresses
People like their anonymity on Reddit. Every action reddit takes to make it less anonymous looks really bad. That kind of thing scares people and reddit already has some PR problems.
rPlayer6554··on JetBrains' unremovable AI assistant meets irresistible outcry
I don't get the outcry. I turned off or uninstalled the plugin then never thought about or saw it again.
rPlayer6554··on Samsung expands DIY repair program, adds Galaxy S23 and Fold 5 in US
I'm a little disappointed. My S22+ charging port is broken and the part on ifixit is 60$. IIRC the Samsung repair shop quoted me the fix to be 80$. Doesn't really seem like I'm saving enough to justify my labour and potential to break it due to lack of expertise. I highly doubt that component is actually worth 60$
rPlayer6554··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
This was an extremely well written article. It had me gripped in the story. Thanks for posting!
rPlayer6554··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
You can't have your cake and eat it too. There are plenty of other lower risk companies that have way lower chances of layoffs, but they don't pay as well. Working at a company that tasks risks and has a high rate of return also has a higher chance of making the wrong bet and needing to cut you. If you want a perfectly stable job go work in the government: you'll be practically unfirable.

rPlayer6554··on Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update
Is it ok to steal from a liquor store because they require a license shown to buy it and for some reason you can't get yours?
rPlayer6554··on Half-Life 25th Anniversary Update
Why not make a new account? Valve is giving this out for free, partially to get people to use their program more. Why not support them in that small way at least?
rPlayer6554··on The antitrust case against Google Search doesn't seem to add up
I've been trying to use DDG for years and I really want to like it. At first it seems as good, but at some point it just doesn't cut it. Yes for most clear cut searches it's fine, but I still have to !g (use Google) enough that I haven't bothered changing for any other device. Especially not my work laptop where I have to do actual work. DDG/Bing is just not as good with programming questions.
rPlayer6554··on The Pixel 8 Pro has better cameras, a brighter screen, anda lotof new AI tricks
But can it call 911? That's the killer (or not) feature for me.
rPlayer6554··on macOS Sonoma is available today
I work in an environment where they won't let me download any applications like this!
rPlayer6554··on Texas death row inmate at mercy of supreme court, and junk science
Society has made a God out of science. Don't get me wrong, science is a fantastic invention and should be taken seriously. Anyone who dismisses science without thought or reason is crazy. But as you saw during the pandemic and through this, we've lost some sense of reason when a flawed human in a white coat says something. We need to take what they say seriously but with a grain of salt that they get things wrong.
rPlayer6554··on Simple fragrance method boosts cognitive capacity: study
I'm absolutely with you. Perfumes, new cars, things with artificial smells can really get me.
rPlayer6554··on The pandemic your grandparents forgot about
One of the problems with the Spanish flu was governments covered it up. It didn't start in Spain, Spain just had better freedom of the press and newspapers could talk about it. That's where it got the name.
rPlayer6554··on I’m so sorry for psychology’s loss, whatever it is
My question after reading is, why aren't psychologists focusing their effort on real problems? Some of the "problems" the listed articles bring up seem vague and useless. I am not even vaguely familiar with this field, so I hesitate to assert any more than that. Other fields have useful problems they solve and that's were famous breakthroughs come from.

Who cares if monkeys are paying for sex if people are killing themselves from depression? Are there not tons of psychological illnesses where progress could be made in new techniques to help people live their lives well? Maybe reduce the need for drugs?

rPlayer6554··on SF cops, firefighters vent prior to big vote on driverless car expansion
I hate this kind of low effort comment. Go ahead and list a few of them if there are so many.
rPlayer6554··on Discord is not documentation
Watch discord have it's reddit moment where they raise prices and people aren't willing to pay, but they are locked in due to hosting huge communities in it.
rPlayer6554··on Spotify reportedly makes users' private playlists public
It seems like some of my private playlists were made public, but some are not.
rPlayer6554··on Meta is blocking EU-based users from accessing Threads via VPN
I don't think many people are so concerned about the privacy features on their social network. Social networks to some degree are inherently about making private things public. A lot of the backlash Facebook gets from the average person is about their political moderation.

At some point the public has been informed that Facebook uses their data to advertise, and apparently that cost is worth it to them for the products they give. So far no one has really found a good paid model for social networks, and ads that use data are way more profitable, so here we are. Companies aren't a charity, they gotta make money somehow.

rPlayer6554··on Ask HN: (How much) do you get paid for being on call?
I was job hunting until a few weeks ago. From my experience this is absolutely not true for junior dev positions. Do your research. It took a while to find a position even with big tech experience.
rPlayer6554··on Swiss capital city wants to test controlled sale of cocaine
You know a cocaine addiction isn't like a pipeline deployment right?
rPlayer6554··on r/ProgrammerHumor will be shutting down to protest Reddit's API changes
There is no alternative, so I'm not sure where people would move to.
rPlayer6554··on Lyft’s plan to take control of its maps and its future
I think both sentiments can be valid. If OSM really needs those contributions they need to take responsibility for updating the license. But we as a community should encourage companies to give back to the OSS projects they benefit from.
rPlayer6554··on Classic fountain pens
The lamy safari is fantastic and only about $35. You can find a black one on Amazon for $20.
