r12343a_19··on Canada extends copyright protection another 20 years to meet trade obligation
Because the trick is to boil the frog slowly. Even the most dense simpleton understands that having no rights means having no rights.

But if you have some rights, starting next Tuesday, and the government keeps extending the start date, you have something to look up to.

Of course, it will be postponed forever.

r12343a_19··on UEFI Secure Boot on the Raspberry Pi
Sadly I've let go. Switched to some other small and fanless things. Surprisingly with x86-64!
r12343a_19··on EU urged to protect grassroots AI research or risk losing out to US
Sure, come over the our EU utopia...

Come to think of it, if only it would be possible to do a swap. Half a mil a year to live in SF sounds harsh but worth the risk.

r12343a_19··on Libreboot 20230423
I never understood what Libreboot does on top of Coreboot. As far as I could tell it's a "distro" of Coreboot that just disables some things and maybe adds a few patches.

All the heavy lifting is done by Coreboot.

r12343a_19··on Remembering Bob Lee
I find the obsession of ignoring how a person died shocking.

Sure, let's remember the person (I never knew before). But... should we pretend he was not stabbed!?

What is wrong with you people?

How a person died is very much relevant for that person and for the world you are living in.

This reminds me of the Ian Murdock suicide. You know, a very much public person in the tech world. Whose death was very much hush hushed because... what? You're not supposed to notice an interaction with the police would unhinge a person (even more)? That he probably also had mental health problems?

r12343a_19··on XUL Layout is gone
It's amazing that for the past 8 years (almost to the day!) imgur has been hosting your screenshots.
r12343a_19··on Is Y Combinator worth the money? Brutally honest review of W22 batch experience
> YC is 100% what you make of it

This is 100% what survivor bias sounds like.

Every party is what you make of it. Every job. Every business. Every interaction.

Except, you know, when this other thing is overhyped and one hopes getting there helps and it turns out... it's not any different than anything else?

r12343a_19··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
> Don’t they understand that this is what drives people to Macs and Chromebooks (and nerds like me to Linux)?

(Internal) metrics say otherwise.

Lol.

r12343a_19··on Bulgarian law enforcement raids offices of cryptocurrency firm Nexo
Dude, reading comprehension much?

I literally started 'by that logic' to underline how broken the whole initial comment was!

Do only smart people use fiat? Like... it's not even worth dissecting your reply.

r12343a_19··on Bulgarian law enforcement raids offices of cryptocurrency firm Nexo
By this logic most large scale human suffering before crypto was created by fiat.

Most of current human suffering is still fiat.

Crypto is barely a blip in the grand scheme and I don't see how it differs from, say, gambling.

r12343a_19··on European countries begin taking down public company registers after ruling
It's blurry because it crosses state boundaries into random countries which don't make this available.
r12343a_19··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
You reply makes no sense. On a grammatical and conceptual level.

All that suffering just so UPI payments go up?
r12343a_19··on Nigeria bans ATM cash withdrawals over $225 a week to force use of CBDC
Because, of course, money is laundered $250 at a time.
r12343a_19··on Samsung’s Android app-signing key has leaked, is being used to sign malware
Hm...

1. GPS didn't work in the background for me. A few OS updates and some Waze updates later it seems I do get turn-by-turn directions.

2. GPU artefacts in Minecraft and Firefox. A few OS, Minecraft and Firefox updates later and it all "just works".

3. Fingerprint sensor works well except when you need it. Murphy's law for sure.

4. I'm in a low signal area and it seems to be unable to receive calls sometimes. I've had people tell me they called and my phone just didn't ring (it's not do not disturb).

Overall is a decent phone but it was a struggle for the high price it had.

r12343a_19··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
Only a few more trillion dollars and its days are numbers.

Maybe, just maybe, Apple has so much money nobody can stop it.

r12343a_19··on European countries begin taking down public company registers after ruling
Well, the immediate associates is generally public info. It's the "final human owner" that gets blurry if you have a chain of companies.

This is not necessarily surprising. The states no longer need the public. As long as they have access to the info, they find public access irrelevant.

Democracy is, imho, not a thing anymore. We are under ultimate statism.

r12343a_19··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
You're the only one introducing "Toxic Individualism" in this thread.

I wonder what do you mean by it?

Because, just as well, there's an aggressive collectivist movement which directly attacks individuals (and individual choices).

It's really easy to switch from "I like to do my things alone, let me be" to "society is evil" after having been made a pariah by the "collective".

r12343a_19··on OpenBSD: Immutable Userland Mappings
I legit wonder if it's not time for OpenBSD to switch to Java.

I mean, there's so much work to keep C safe and make sure memory is managed well, etc.

What the project needs is a virtual machine! Clearly they don't care about performance when security is on the line (they did disable multithreading, no?). A good virtual machine will be a small performance loss compared to dealing with this stuff... forever.

Of course, you still have to deal with user land binaries.

r12343a_19··on Ftx.com Has Probably Collapsed

r12343a_19··on AI better at creating fragrances than professional perfumers

r12343a_19··on One trick Apple uses to make you think green bubbles are “gross”
HN readers are aware about poor contrast. Eg, your comment (which seems tame) is downvoted and has some lovely light color on light background combo.
r12343a_19··on Google Pixel 6 still freezes when calling Emergency Services
Oh, so there isn't a problem with my dirty fingers or something. The fingerprint reader indeed works like half the time.
r12343a_19··on Google Pixel 6 still freezes when calling Emergency Services
The Pixel 6 is an overhyped disappointment. I replaced my old super-cheap Android One phone with a Pixel 6 and it's full of hardware / software bugs: GPS has problems, I see graphics artefacts (GPU problems?) and Google doesn't care.

I'm not surprised at all it has such a problem.

I should have bought an iPhone SE.

r12343a_19··on Dear Oracle, Please Release the JavaScript Trademark
Since they trademarked Java makes sense to keep the JavaScript trademark. JavaScript was a terrible terrible name, but it is what it is...

This is a non-problem for the world. I never heard of this being enforced in any way.

r12343a_19··on General belief in a just world is associated with dishonest behavior (2017)
> we recruited 501 American participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk

The Mechanical Turk folks are the new sociology students. This study has 100% chance of not being reproducible or statistically representative.

> 63.3% of the participants reported having flipped the winning outcome [...] in a previous study using a similar coin-toss game with an online (MTurk) sample (Schindler and Pfattheicher, 2017), 76.7% of the participants reported having flipped the winning coin-side

So, just world people are 13% more honest than the general population? How can you name the title then "General Belief in a Just World Is Positively Associated with Dishonest Behavior" when clearly, everybody is dishonest and these bunch were actually... less so?

> Given that general BJW was found to be linked to antisocial tendencies, we expected stronger general BJW to be linked to more dishonesty.

I postulate academia strongly correlates with dishonesty.
