qzervaas··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
Agreed, would be nice for an Android version. There were 3 main reasons why it's only iOS (in fact, iPhone) only (for now, at least):

1) I'm the sole developer, so it takes a long time to develop (this was about 3-4 months)

2) I really wanted to integrate health data. The step/distance tracking on iPhone and the Health app is perfect for this.

3) The price point lends itself moreso to iPhone users than Android users.

Mainly because of the screen dimensions of most phones. I think the optimal amount is in the range of 4-7 as you point out, but it didn't look quite as nice.

You can have less, but it encourages you to keep adding until you have six tasks.

It came from my own needs where there's a few set tasks I need to do every day in my own business. It's not that I forget, but sometimes I'm lazy, and this motivates me to ensure they all get done, each day.

I'm the developer: If you have any questions about Streaks I'll be here all day!

Edit:

For those interested, this is my first app written in Swift, and also my first app using HealthKit.

I think HealthKit is pretty awesome and over the next few years, there will be a ton of apps using it in interesting ways.

qzervaas··on “We are only collecting the list of applications you have installed.”
They don't explicitly give it. You can define your own URL schemes, e.g. hackernews://, and the OS will tell you if a handler for that URL scheme is installed.

I had to look up the definition of "genuflect":

"Lower one's body briefly by bending one knee to the ground, typically in worship or as a sign of respect."

qzervaas··on Ad Blocks’ Doomsday Scenarios
My biggest pet peeve are the ads that auto-launch the App Store on iOS. Surely this can't be difficult for the ad providers to detect.

I wish Apple would auto-ban apps from the App Store using this method.

qzervaas··on Implementation of Hex Grids
Thanks. That issue only started with iOS 8.3, still trying to track down the cause. Very frustrating, since the app hasn't been updated since before 8.3.
qzervaas··on Implementation of Hex Grids
I built my first iOS game[1] last year using Amit's original hexagon guide. This new guide would have been useful too. Still makes for good reading now.

qzervaas··on HBO is going after HBO Now users overseas
Understood, but we're still taken advantage of massively by so-called Australian Rupert Murdoch.

Example: Formula 1 bait-and-switch. It was on free-to-air HD (one of the few HD programs actually shown in Australia).

In February (one month before start of new season), Channel 10 (partly owned by Fox) switched the rights to Foxtel (pay TV). To watch it in HD on Foxtel will cost about $80/mo.

Free To Air in Australia is dying a slow death, but there's no reasonable alternatives. Major sport here is shown in SD, except randomly if they maybe decide to upscale it, or show it in 1440x1080i (very rare though)

qzervaas··on HBO is going after HBO Now users overseas
I know a number of people here in Australia doing this. My argument to them is now they're just paying extra to pirate since the content isn't licensed here in this way.

Australian pay TV is a scam. It's the only way in Australia to see GoT, but HD isn't a default option. That'll be $10/mo extra thanks.

qzervaas··on Apple ResearchKit on GitHub
Sure, but that was an isolated mistake, whereas using NSLocalizedString() just becomes habit after a while.

It's jarring when you see hard-coded English strings in any iOS code. Android does a much better job of pushing developers to localizing strings.

One big thing I don't like about iOS is even if you have a base language, you need to duplicate all strings in any subsequent languages. (I often have a "US English" and "Australian English", so trivial changes require changes in two files).

On Android, the language files extend the base file, so you can just override favourite/favorite labour/labor type strings without having to duplicate everything.

(Obviously you can script / auto-generate language files, but that's not the default position).

qzervaas··on Apple ResearchKit on GitHub
It's interesting to see how code is structured when it comes from Apple (or vendors they're working closely with).

Surprising some of their best practices aren't followed, such as hard-coding English strings instead of using something like NSLocalizedString()

qzervaas··on Show HN: NJ Transit REST API
There is a lot of open data: http://transitfeeds.com

(Disclaimer: it's my site)

qzervaas··on Show HN: ExternalTesters – simple registration for Apple's TestFlight
Since Apple took over TestFlight, there's no longer a feature to share a tester sign-up link, so I built this over the past week to scratch my own itch.
qzervaas··on The User Is Drunk
Many of the features required sign-in previously, but now they don't. Some still do (e.g. API), but good point, it need to be better documented
qzervaas··on The User Is Drunk
Agreed, that's why I wanted to do it!
qzervaas··on The User Is Drunk
Same here, for http://transitfeeds.com
qzervaas··on Google Calendar for iPhone
I wonder what the rationale is to have the springboard display name as "Google Calendar" instead of "Calendar". It displays as "Google Cal...", also known as a rookie error.

Surely even "G Cal" would be better.

My other complaint is the app icon doesn't dynamically update to today's date. Through no fault of their own of course, but I'll keep Apple's Calendar on my first screen for this feature alone.

qzervaas··on Terence Tao: the Mozart of maths
Although ironically in Australia we would say something like "he is good at sport", whereas in the US it would be "good at sports".
qzervaas··on An Open Letter to Tim Cook Regarding the App Store 70/30 Revenue Split
As an Australian developer, any sales to Australian customers include 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax).

Apple send a monthly GST report containing the amount of tax we need to pay for our Australian sales, which makes reporting super-easy.

Side note: Apple don't charge the tax on top of the price, so earning a 99c sale from a US customer (net revenue ~$0.70) is far more valuable than a 99c sale from an Australian customer ($0.63)

qzervaas··on An Open Letter to Tim Cook Regarding the App Store 70/30 Revenue Split
I was going to post basically this exact thing.

Even basic filtering like "hide all apps that haven't been updated for iOS 8", or something along those lines would help with discoverability (and in this example, reward the developers who are stay on top of their updates).

There are a bunch of other filters that would be useful too.

qzervaas··on An Open Letter to Tim Cook Regarding the App Store 70/30 Revenue Split
You could try, but getting traction on the new app probably wouldn't be worth the hassle. It's not trivial to earn $100k from an app, doing it twice would be extremely difficult.
qzervaas··on Show HN: GTFS (transit) feed normalization
It is quite niche, but of all the Government data that is made open, anecdotally I believe transit data gets used more than any other data.

I believe this site can bring a lot of value to certain organizations, especially once I get more feed normalizers up and running other than the one for Muni.

qzervaas··on List of URLs checked by Twitter for its app targeting
This is URL scheme an app needs to add to their info.plist in order to integrate the Facebook SDK. The number after fb is the ID of their page/app on Facebook.
qzervaas··on Let's Talk About Beacons
Public transit is one of the more compelling uses for beacons. If every bus, say, transmitted their vehicle ID you could improve the real-time experiences in third-party apps.

For instance, to precisely know which vehicle you're on when showing arrival estimates or vehicle locations. You can also determine a bunch of other contextually aware info when you know which vehicle a user is on (traffic delays, detours, trackwork, etc)

Wouldn't be the worst thing, but you definitely wouldn't wear it on your right wrist (throttle). 99% of the time if you ride one-handed, it's the left hand (clutch) you lift up.
qzervaas··on Common App Rejections
I recently published my first ever game, Hexiled. It has had some mild success in the first 6 weeks it's been available on the App Store.

About 2 weeks ago, a clone appeared on the App Store. It wasn't just copying the original game play, but boldly used the same game name, which Apple approved.

It's now been removed. The process was to contact Apple, who then provided us with a point of contact for the offending game. We then had to ask the developer of the offending app.

Thankfully, they took it down without any fight, but why should we have to even go through this dance?

On a side tangent, a recent update was "Metadata rejected" because the reviewer couldn't find the ads in our game when we stated there were ads.

Ads only appear after 5 games, which was clearly stated in the "Review Notes" that you can submit in iTunes Connect. I guess the reviewer didn't bother reading these though.
